Going On An Over-50s Cruise Taught Me New Cruise Tricks

I went on a cruise where you had to be over-50. This over-50s only cruise taught me three big lessons about cruising that I had not thought about before. Theses three tips are things every cruise passenger should do before they switch or try and new cruise lines, especially if from a cruise line that you really enjoy. If I had done these three things I may have made a very different decision before going on this Saga Cruise.
I paid for this cruise myself. I mention this as people, ask if I don't say it!

I'm 24 and my boyfriend and I hate all the noise and partying on a ship, I just want peace and relaxation on a cruise. I want calm and tranquil environments. Cruises like this make more sense to me despite being so far away from the age range. More cruise companies should take note of younger people who enjoy similar cruise experiences as older adults. Maybe there would be less age-restricted cruises. Just a thought. Side note: I'm biased, but I think Princess does a pretty good job with that.

Good afternoon Gary and many thanks for your enjoyable video. There are a number of points that you didn’t mention that we enjoy taking advantage of when we cruise with Saga. Travel insurance is included in the price. Door to ship, and return home is included in the price up to 300 miles. A domestic flight from Scotland say, then collection from airport and transfer to the ship is included in the price. Drinks are included in the price, alcoholic and non, coffee, ice cream etc etc. Room service is included in the price, so meals on your balcony are available, milk in your fridge is replenished, and so is the fresh fruit in your cabin. There are binoculars, umbrella, towelling robes and slippers, hairdryer etc. in your room, together with filtered water regularly replenished. When going ashore there are small bottles of water included for you to take with you. When waiting in cold weather for the tender return a gazebo was set up on the jetty with hot drinks, biscuits etc. - included. There is no additional cost for the speciality restaurants. We had the feeling that if we asked for anything on board they would do their best to provide it.

Thank you Gary. I came over here from a link that you gave me from a ship within a ship review. I’m over 64 and my sister (who is Autistic with Special Needs), is 59. We love cruising and for me it’s a controlled environment where I can allow my sister to roam without getting too anxious. Big ships don’t allow that really and whilst I may do more of the activities, my sister is very happy doing the puzzles in the library and knitting workshops. Plus she loves to dance. (I can give those activities a WIDE BERTH, but at least I know where she is and I can claim a few hours respite). We tend to travel more on P&O nowadays and, truly it is going downhill. The staff and crew are very friendly, but the facilities are sinking, whilst they expect you to pay more and more each trip. This ship seems ideal for us. I particularly like the chauffeur service that they lay on - definitely a bonus for me! To be honest, I use the fact that I’m cruising, to give myself a Social Media break and use it when I feel the necessity in port. So, I take your point about the WiFi, but the fact that it’s free and available for basic stuff is enough for me. The proof of the pudding is in the eating and, as P&O have used up their loyalty with me, small/medium ships and River cruises seem to be our next trips. But familiarity and a safe space are now our requirements. Saga seems to offer that. Thank you for this review, I shall check out the detailed one next.

People over 50’s are just as big on WiFi use and social media these days!....they need to update that ASAP!..... And ....ballroom dancing is very yesteryear now!....I’m almost 60 and my hey day was 70’s /80’s...ballroom dancing was my mother’s generation...and who wants a silent disco! We had been waiting to go by Saga on our next holiday until Corona stopped everything....glad I saw this and thanks for the info....if they want to encourage the nearer 50s/60s demographic to start booking also, they need to give them something also.... I’d still like pub quizzes, 50s/60’s pop rock nights or 1970’s/80’s disco nights, with tribute bands such as Elvis, ELO, Queen or Madonna!.....and definitely WiFi and social media use full time! Along with the cultural and history/ art evenings etc. also... Maybe someone of your influence in the cruising world needs to send them an email!

I have a cruise that I booked in October of this year with Royal Caribbean. On the itinerary was Grand Cayman. After I booked and paid, I read a news article that the Cayman's were closed to cruise ships. Further investigation informed me that the government of the Caymans had no plans to reopen and did not even have an estimate. Now, the cruise line must have known this but, nevertheless, continued to show it as a destination on their website. I have no problem as to why the destination was changed to another port. My problem is, that they knew it and still advertised it. I know they were perfectly in their rights to make the change but, only taking it off their site until much later.

They run marathons, play tennis, pickle ball, ski, both water and snow, they socialize and go dancing. They are regulars at the gym and fitness classes like yoga and spinning. Im looking for a ship with good food, cabins, a great itinerary ( first) , nice areas for reading and admiring the view. Not huge on the entertainment but happy to watch things like cooking demos , destination chats .. I’ve done trivia a few times and it was fun but I don’t chase it. I like jacuzzis, and spa treatments ( bring those prices down) I like listening to decent modern music, a quiet drink. The ship must have included tea/coffee and snack areas. Never been in a casino , not interested in bingo , art sales, false jewellery sales etc. Happy if there’s no kids or drunken folks. A cruise ( for me) is a restful holiday with great destinations… Have booked on Viking Venus. Think it will suit very well… But thoroughly enjoyed our Princess, RCI, MSC , Voyages to Antiquity, Uniworld, and Emerald cruises too..

Totally agree. I've only been on two cruises, both with NCL, and we go as a family. 3 generations all enjoying themselves because of the variety of activities. I will say that the volume in the atrium in the evenings is way too loud for me. But that's really been my only complaint onboard. Plus from the research I did, they seem to be far cheaper to book and have more "free at sea" than others. Its great not having to worry if you're getting your moneys worth from the drinks package, because it was included for free.

Simple 2-3 day cruises around the Bahamas, small boats, a well chorograph traditional dinner experience, a nightly show, lots of sun chairs and decks, best for me was if purchased online I got a complimentary bottle of champagne every day. So I'd just start my day mixing some OJ from breakfast buffet and enjoy the ocean. Short, simple and sweet and I went several times a year.

We did a cruise with them to the Fjords pre virus and vowed to return. The food and cabin were exceptional, the staff were superb. The only downside was our friends found the rolling of the ship a problem due to its lower center of gravity (as described by a crew member) i.e. to reduce the steepness of the gangplank at ports. We have a trip in October, not sure where it'll actually go as the ports to visit are still amber and SAGA have said they will not go into a port where we would have to quarantine and pay for several rip off tests on return.

I agree with you regarding most cruise lines have a “target market” they are vying for, but I have found that this also, unfortunately, let’s some believe in the cruise line stereotypes. For example, “Carnival is only for party animals and everyone is drunk” vs “Holland America is only for old people and it’s boring, everyone is using a scooter”…you get the idea. If a new cruiser uses the other info you gave (checking the daily program before booking is a great idea) but also goes with an open mind they will find that most cruise lines have more in common than are different. Don’t make up your mind until you’ve tried it yourself. I’m like you I think in that I prefer to try them all!
