Godzilla Versus the Marvel Universe
Godzilla has been adapted into comics runs by Dark Horse and IDW but Marvel did it first. Over their two year run, Godzilla rampaged across the U.S. battling many of Marvel's most popular superheroes. It was bananas!
In this video we look at the entire run and look to see which of the movies' tropes appear in the comics.

My favorite single comic panel of all time is Godzilla trying to push over the Empire State Building and Thor on the other side pushing back. The sheer lunacy of that sums up what's great about superhero comics.
What a missed opportunity to not have Godzilla fight marvel’s own collection of monsters, like Fing Fang Foom and Goom

DEEDSHOT R No he doesn’t. In fact several videos about them say Godzilla wins. Plus Foom has no answer to Godzilla’s regeneration factor, energy absorption and manipulation and Godzilla has far stronger feats than Fin Fang Foom. 😂

We all know Godzilla's greatest foe, Charles Barkley!
Just imagine there was a time when Godzilla, G.I. Joe, ROM, Shogun Warriors and Superheroes all shared the Marvel universe
The reason it suddenly ends is actually a behind the scenes issue. Toho, the studio that owns Godzilla, wanted Marvel to charge more for the Godzilla comic. Marvel didn't want to do this and couldn't negotiate to keep the rights. They actually wanted to continue the run
@Drforrester31

Sounds about right for Toho, honestly. I'm not sure they've ever made a business decision that was specifically a benefit for their customers/fans
Fun video! I loved the kaiju battle at the end. I saw Godzilla vs Megalon in a movie theater when I was young . When you bought your ticket you also got a free mini comic about the movie.
Better Mr. Fantastic plan: let Sue do her thing. She’s the most powerful FF member for a reason.
@ComicTropes
6 жыл бұрын
These days, no question. To be fair, while she was very powerful in this early 70s era, she really got a power increase in the 80s. Still, Godzilla was tiny so yeah, Sue should've been able to handle him solo. Oh well. Part of what makes this run just fun and silly.
You know why Godzilla and Hulk don't fight each other. Giant green radioactive monsters chased by the military to little to no effect, but are heroic and misunderstood. If they met they would team up and kill us all 😀
20:35 this is genius
Saw "Godzilla's Revenge' last night where this kid was dreaming he had a friendship with Godzilla's son (forgot his name) on this island full of monsters. Weird movie, even for Godzilla.

I freakin' ❤️ Marvel's Godzilla run I was 7-9 years old when it was published and had gotten into comics a year earlier during a hospital stay. Marvel's 70s Star Wars comics were MUST READ!! material for me as well. I was such a nerd. 🤓

some of the star wars comic were REALLY good. and others were total shit ofc.
You left out a small but very important detail. The Avengers, especially Thor, were holding back because they didn't want to kill Godzilla. But still thumbs up. Great vid.

I love the work that went into this whole episode, especially the ending; camera angles, sound effects, costumes, props, and all! I never know what to expect in some of your videos lol. Seriously my favorite channel since I found it!
Casinos continuing to operate while Godzilla is destroying the city is probably the most realistic part of the story $$$ 🎰 😂
I just finished my morning coffee. Now I have atomic breath. Great episode and fantastic ending.
Godzilla Minus One has reignited my Big G interest. ❤ this video!
Trimpe drew a parody in the first issue with Hulk getting stomped and vowing revenge on Big G. Also, just in case. 'Dum-Dum' was named after the ammo and weaponry of that nick-name. His given name was Timothy, and in a recent retcon, it was revealed he's been dead for years, and Nick programmed a sophisticated LMD to operate in his place way back in the 60's, which means Godzilla was fighting a mech the entire time. Also, Marvel does have a Monster Island, but it's the surface domain of the Mole Man. Among the creatures there is a being named Tricephalos, who, as the name implies, has three heads.
We also have a Marvel Trope. Marvel writing licensed into their universe. Whereas, other companies would keep them separate. Marvel makes them part of continuity.
Dude that monster fight at the end was epic better than some of your newer skits do some more stuff like that haha. Loved it was so unexpected
The ending to this video is all kinds of amazing.
My local public library used to have the 33rpm story album of the first 1 or 2 issues of Marvel's Godzilla. It was pretty cool. I had a couple of Marvel's superhero story albums and later had couple of the comics with the 45 version of record. I probably still have the later somewhere in one of my comic boxes.
Whahoo! I think I shot my mouth off about this story in some other viddie of yours about Godzilla; I never had the issues leading up to the New York fight. This is so sweeeeettttttt!!!!!!!! Edit: And a B.O.C. shout out, I am so in my happy place
The Dropkick Sound effect *CHUD* lol , its too bad Godzilla didnt fight chuds in the NYC sewer lol
Godzilla was made to be OP in this comic. The Avengers, Champions and Fantastic Four couldn’t even scratch him. He stepped on the Savage Hulk with ease, matched Thor in strength and was said to be equal or greater in strength than the Midgard Serpent by Thor himself, and even with the combined might of the Fantastic Four, Avengers and Shield, they still couldn’t beat him. Plus Godzilla has a regeneration factor and it’s insane how fast he can regenerates. Especially in films and in manga and comics. Puts Hulk’s to shame at times. None of the Avengers, FF or Shield or even the Champions could ever leave a scratch on him. Hercules (as in the man who has the strength to lifted the weight of the universe) even struggled to lift Godzilla who was attempting to squash him. Yeah Godzilla was OP in this comic. And this isn’t even the strongest incarnation of the Big G. Read Godzilla In Hell. Then you got the most OP Godzilla of all time. And yes you are correct. Toho’s contract with outside companies does prohibit them from making Godzilla lose or die. Toho doesn’t want their Kaiju disgraced.
So good!! I really love the new opening animation and theme song too!!
Great comic book run. Awesome creative team and fun story. Thank you for the review.
Love the logo on the cover. Never read the 70s comic, didn't even know it exist. The only Godzilla comic I had was Godzilla vs Charles Barkley. Godzilla was rocking some sweet kicks in that one.
It cracks me up how much Marvel’s iteration of Godzilla looks like Reptar from the Rugrats cartoon
I remember reading these as a kid. Absolutely loved them.
I discovered your channel about three or four months ago. It has quickly become one of my favorite channels. I really enjoyed your Jack Kirby show, but to be completely honest, any Fantastic Four or Batman content I will enjoy. But you do a great job on your content and history of what ever subject your spotlighting on. Thank you for all of the awesome and fun shows.
😂😂😂 I missed that epic ending the first time I watched this 🤣🤣🤣
Marvel's Godzilla was the first comic I ever regularly collected. I had no interest in superheroes but what 7 year old doesn't love Godzilla?
Businesses wanting to stay open during a disaster was somehow more confusing in a pre-COVID world.
Actually other than Godzilla Earth from the recent Netflix movies, the tallest Godzilla in film to date is the Hanna-Barbera one at exactly 400 feet, putting him slightly above Shin’s final form. Godzilla Earth is ridiculously massive, of course, at around 1000 feet.
THE NUMBER OF VIEW THIS VIDEO HAS GOTTEN DO NOT REFLECT ITS QUALITY THIS IS ONE OF YOUR BEST!!!!
Godzilla getting hit by Mjolnir, and barely feeling it... Wow!
Just a side note, the IDW series Godzilla in Hell, despite sounded totally stupid, is actually quite good. Especially the 2nd issue which was completely painted by Bob Eggleton. It is a very unusual treatment of the character.
Fatso mcretard is my favourite marvel character

Have you ever been to Vegas! The building could be on fire but as long as it isn't this specific gaming table....keep gaming.
How I would've ended the last issue:Hulk really DOES show up/fights G; 'Annoying Kid'/Rob gets injured and is in a serious coma; the Avengers,F4, Spider-Man are helpless in fighting G and he leaves NY in ruins AFTER he swats the Hulk with his tail so hard he's sent flying n2 the mountains outside of NY..!!!
To be fair, Dum Dum Duggan is a badass
"The combined forces of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four are not enough to stop Godzilla.." That may in fact be the best sentence anyone has ever said ever.
Ok, the ending movie short was one of your most entertaining bits ever. Bravo 👏 👏👏👏👏
The hundred Year War where Godzilla fought against the Valois and Plantagenet dynasties for control of the Kingdom of France.
The bonkers stories are the best
I would love to see more Godzilla representation on this channel.

This was a fun comic! And the Champions was a fun comic as well! Wish both had lasted longer.
11:42 You're describing Godzilla's Revenge.
Now I want to see tiny Thanos in the Marvel Universe. And tiny Dr. Doom.

Definitely your best episode. Great stuff.
AHAAH! He does break out of an ice shelf in Godzilla vs. King Kong! Busted!
Best. Kaiju fight. Ever.
Actually... If you look closely to text when Godzilla uses his breath, it's still called ATOMIC breath. Only refered to as "Nuclear breath" indicating that it's radioactive, despite looking like fire
well done Chris - another really fun episode, also well done on reaching the 3,000 subs
12:08 - The MUTOS attack Las Vegas in the 2014 Godzilla movie. I wonder if this was a reference to this comic.
Was not expeting that banger at the end
@ 21:00 ZORAK, is that YOU!?
Anyone else remember Nick Fury getting weird reports about giant monsters in early Transformers comics? "I tell ya Dum Dum, If it's that big green fire snortin' lizard again, I quit."
Tim Dugan was called Dum Dum Dugan because he used Dum Dum rounds to make the Nazis even more dead. His character is where I learned what a Dum Dum round was.
Chris walking into a Beastie Boys video.
I read every issue when it came out. Loved it.
This brings back memories.
Yes 100% I love the Marvel run on Godzilla! But a close tie would be the Half Century War!
20:15 ...It's too bad the US comic version of the (japanese) Ultraman wasn't great. Would have loved to see you do a trope on that. ...JUST TO SEE MORE GIANT ROBOTS BEAT THE BOOYAH OUT OF GIANT KAIJUU!!!
So this Comic Tropes last episode in chrnological order #RIPChris
that 'big fella' action figure looks well worth a dollar
I really enjoyed this one man. I love Godzilla ultraman and any and all japanese kaiju and tokusatsu. Hey have you ever seen the Japanese tokusatsu Spiderman? Lol the theme song alone is pure gold, and he has his own transformer type robot.

Hello helicarrier pilot Hugh Howard = Howard Hughes!
Come on, we all know there's only one force in comics that could go toe-to-toe with Godzilla: Neutro!
Those actors in the suits were some super heavyweights. Where did you find them? The Mall of America's food court?
It turned into an AVGN video in the end really fast
"Easily the biggest version of Godzilla ever" So ironic that the movie mentioned at the beginning immediately one upped that
the champions lol. what a z-tier team
7:32 Heheh, yeah, about that...
My favorite Godzilla movie-1998's "Godzilla", a so bad it's good movie.
Should have sent Godzilla back to the ice age and had Godzilla wanted to Alaska. Then be frozen.
Godzilla has been killed a few times already so I don't see why it would have been a problem to hit him with something similar to an oxygen destroyer
I got a Beta Ray Bill vibe on a few of those pics was there an artist in common I wonder.
Not saying this to be a know--it-all (I mean, I won't get a No Prize for mentioning this), just want to save you from future embarrassment (I'm an altruistic kinda guy...). Herb Trimpe's same doesn't rhyme with "shrimp," but instead, is pronounced "Trimp-ey." I've never forgotten the Bullpen Bulletin where Stan introduced his new artist as "...Happy Herb Trimpe (rhymes with 'blimpy'"). In fact, 40 years-or-so later, I met his second-cousin (that's what a cousin's daughter would be, right?), and when she wrote her name on a piece of paper, she was surprised when I pronounced it correctly. I recalled Stan Lee's rhyme to her about the artist, and she laughed and told me that was her dad's cousin. Anyway, I pass that correction on just in case you might run into him at a Con or something...
Isn't the US trademark logo for Godzilla products still the silhouette of Marvel's Godzilla logo?
What a nice toku you have made
Thermonuclear Radioactive Death Breath
7:33 That's what i thought until I saw Planet Godzilla .........
Moon Knight was brought on screen but not discussed. I demand more moon Knight content....Darkhawk would also be acceptable. Dude, what's your problem with Dugan? are we in High School? that's his name, man. Are you going to trip him in the hallway and tell his crush that he pees his pants? wait... the Scientist's Grandson who thinks godzilla is a hero? BUCKLE IN EVERYONE, this comic has a Kenny!
You can't kill Godzilla the only way you can kill Godzilla if keep him out of the water.
3:31 Trimpe had a bigger budget for FX than the movies had.
