To you as well. What a grand surprise indeed. Now I feel like watching some of the older films, especially the first Godzilla. The one that this seems to emulate in tone.

I actually watched the first one the night before I saw Minus One. They definitely took a lot of inspiration from it.

I'm definitely looking forward to checking it out sometime. It never ceases to amaze me how the best monster films are not truly about the monsters themselves. If only more films could understand that.

I really enjoyed the film. Was not expecting it to be as beautifully written as it was. I think Americans have been spoon fed a shallow diet of CGI, over the top action sequences, all at the expense of ignoring what gives a film substance: believable and relatable characters. Godzilla Minus One did that. It's a big breath of fresh air.

Have you seen the 1954 original (the Japanese version, not the American release with Raymond Burr cut in)? It's a genuinely great film, in the same ways that Godzilla Minus One was: a real movie for adults, with heart and with substantial character arcs. It also portrayed Godzilla as a purely terrifying walking disaster, in much the same way this one did though of course with the effects available in 1954. This was really the first modern film in the Godzilla franchise that accomplished what Ishiro Honda did back then--but done as modern spectacle with today's production values.

I can't say enough good things about this movie. Regardless of topic, it is a fantastic piece of movie making. The big radioactive lizard was just the icing.

Exactly. The movie is about human struggles. Godzilla just happens to step into the frame in all of his awesomeness. He is the catalyst pushing their journeys, not the substance of the film itself. That is what the Monsterverse got wrong.

Please don't let subtitles scare you off. In fact, going way back to the 1930's, Japan has made some of the finest movies ever made (Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi).

Agreed. There are some fantastic foreign films out there that Americans will miss because they are so used to their own culture.

Not to knock against those who avoid subtitles out of trouble paying attention to the film at the same time as the written dialogue. I have struggled with that at times, though I've gotten used to it. And so can others with practice.

I am Japanese. To be honest, I'm surprised and very happy that this movie is being appreciated by people in the West. It's a shame that it didn't win Best Picture, but it's clear that this movie is great even without the Academy's prestige. It's all thanks to you otakus who made this movie more valuable. thank you!

Wow. Thank you for the comment, and you're very welcome. You might have made my day. There are many movies that are great without the Academy's prestige. Many of them will be in my best films of 2023 video. In a fair world, I definitely think this could have be nominated though. I can't wait to add this masterful gem of monster filmmaking to my 4k collection.
