    One of the reasons why Godzilla expresses his anger, as the director of "Minus One" Takashi Yamazaki said in an interview, is that the concept is "Tatari-Gami (Kami = God)". This is similar to the scene in Hayao Miyazaki's animated film ``Princess Mononoke,'' in which the boar god bears a curse and attacks those around him indiscriminately. In the case of Godzilla, an ancient giant creature became "Tatari-Gami" due to the effects of a nuclear explosion, but in addition to that, there is also a famous artist known as a spiritualist, especially in Japan, who watched it when it was originally released in 1954. It is thought that the influence of a review by a person named Tadanori Yokoo has been felt later. It landed from Tokyo Bay and destroyed the city of Ginza, which had not been destroyed by air raids during the war. Yokoo said in his review that the vengeful spirits of the soldiers who died in World War II seemed to dwell in the way they passed the Imperial Palace, where the Emperor is located, and attacked the National Diet Building located behind it. It is written in I think that's probably what Ishirō Honda, who directed the 1954 original, had in mind. I also heard that when the original movie was released in 1954, audiences in Japan gave a huge round of applause at the scene where the National Diet Building was destroyed. Godzilla is KAIJU, which has a special meaning for Japanese people. It's not just a giant lizard monster, it's a mystical, sacred dragon-like, angry god of destruction.

    They never really straight up said why Kaochi was shook so bad, but I think it is implied that it is due to his survivor’s guilt; the shame of being alive when he feels like he should have died for his country. Although he was too much of a “coward” to do so. And actually there are 1 or 2 scenes that kind of reflect on this like when he confesses his problems to his partner or when he is talking to himself

  • @tyrannophantom3291

    @tyrannophantom3291

    7 ай бұрын

    Also one thing I forgot to mention is that he says that a large part of the guilt is related to the guilt and trauma of when the mechanic crew got massacred, and how it is “all his fault” because he never boarded the plan and fired at Godzilla in the beginning scene. All this guilt and shame piled on top of him makes him suicidal, and makes him have nightmares

  • @thefantasyzonechannel

    @@tyrannophantom3291 so I agree 100% I think they do an amazing job explaining his guilt. One of the shining points of the movie and his character for sure! Leaving the "coward" part to just conversations was fine. I just wish there was a little more. But again, this is a minor complaint for an amazing movie, absolutely amazing!

    I really liked Akiko, the orphaned girl. She was only 2 years old when they shot the film. Yamazaki said in an interview that the role had originally been for a boy, but she was the only 2 year old who could communicate with the crew in some way and normally 2 year olds are not that way.😊

    Godzilla Minus One successfully enables us to empathize with the Japanese citizens, shedding light on the post-war struggles they faced, paralleling the experiences of our main characters. The film's strength lies in its ability to convey this narrative without spoon-feeding every detail. For instance, Kōichi Shikishima's fear of becoming a full kamikaze pilot is subtly depicted without explicit exposition. The film avoids unnecessary handholding, allowing viewers to engage with its narrative, maintaining an element of mystery and depth.

    Shikishima didn’t do this because he had PTSD. He didn’t want to die. Remember his folks told him to come back alive. Btw, Godzilla is "so mad" so to speak, because Godzilla is a metaphor for warfare. The unmitigated, uncanny, incomprehension, devastating element of what Japan went through during the war.

  • @thefantasyzonechannel

    @thefantasyzonechannel

    7 ай бұрын

    Yeah the PTSD piece I thought they handled very well. And how it really works throughout the entire film. I just thought the “come back alive part” was a little simple. But again a very small, simple complaint for a pretty much perfect movie. Maybe a flashback of him talking to his parents, idk. It wasn’t that big a deal. Just thought it could have been done differently.

  • @EzeICE

    @EzeICE

    7 ай бұрын

    @thefantasyzonechannel yeah it was a small piece, but I think showing a flashback will be like holding the audience's hand too much. It being implied was stronger because he had such a great redemption arc. He was ready to do what he needed to do, but ultimately, he chose to live not for himself but for Akiko and to fight for a better future. The film is brilliant. Yes, not a 10 out of 10 film it did have its implausible moments, but I feel you on that though.

  • @thefantasyzonechannel

    From what I understand the G-man is super pissed off @ the United States setting off some nuclear testing & causing his mutation. I think I read the subtitles that he messed up several American battleships first then swam to the nearest land & so happened to be Ginza

    Dude, he us so shook because he shamed his family and all citizens of Japan. This movie is a history lesson inside of a movie anoit the horrors of war THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED! And its also a movie about guilt, PTSD, shame, etc. Godzilla is so mad because theyve f'd him up so bad(the Americans with the atom bombs and testing that changed his whole body. And it was a representation of the war too.

    If you don't know he's shook you don't understand japanese culture and why he feels the way he does. They were not "trained" to kill themselves, they were brainwashed. Failing to uphold your job is a much more major thing in japan. You were looked upon as a coward and you should not be alive. Its why when when things like the ending is so well done by the ones who shunned him changing their view.

    The Kamikaze pilots were a last ditch and desperate effort of the Japanese government to use in a war they knew they were inevitably going to lose. Korichi sacrificing his life would have been futile and would have not changed the outcome of the war. Or Korichi just didn't want to die which is a human sentiment I can totally understand.

  • @grinningwombat
    @grinningwombat7 ай бұрын

    So to your first complaint, he is a coward. He is a coward and didnt want to die, so he abandoned his duty. He froze up and couldnt fire his gun, because he is a coward. 2ndly, this causes his guilt and ptsd. They are connected but not necessarily the same issue

  • @thefantasyzonechannel

    @thefantasyzonechannel

    7 ай бұрын

    Agreed and I got the coward piece. I guess I wish it was just a little more than simply he was a coward. Because the ptsd part I feel they knocked it out the park. His experience from the start of the film impacts him the entire film and is great! Again it’s a very minor complaint but I just wished it was more than just he was a coward. But at the end of the day, this movie was a masterpiece!

    Massively overrated. I genuinely have no idea why so many people are gushing at this. For starters it's not even in American! I guess they filmed it in foreign to save money but its totally ridiculous and makes it 💯impossible to follow. I didn't have a clue what was happening or how this fits in with the other films. I reckon the only people who like this are the same people that pretend to like trendy Swedish detective dramas on Netflix. 2 out of 10 at best
