    It's a decent enough introduction to Godzilla/Gojira. At least it isn't TriStar Godzilla. This movie would have been perfect if it had had about...20 more minutes of Godzilla.

    The factoids that blew my mind when I first learned it is that this version of Godzilla stands 355 feet tall, has a tail measurement of 550 ft 4 in from base to tip, and the volume of his roar is 174 decibels. And the fact that Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson co-starred in this movie as a husband and wife duo with a young son, then in the MCU as twins Wanda and Pietro Maximoff in Avengers: Age Of Ultron is a mindfuck.

    This film was visually amazing. Even with the limited screen time if the titular Godzilla, it reverberates the feeling of actual gigantic monsters suddenly appearing in the human world and just wrecking it. This film was so good, its director got to film Star Wars Rogue One, arguably the best Star Wars movie out of all of them (Empire Strikes Back is neck and neck).

    The fact that they 'blue-balled' us for awhile is what made the fights so great in the first place; built the tension, the anticipation, and then the payoff was so much better. Imo, that was the whole point (and also suitable for a Godzilla re-introduction/opening story) ^Meanwhile, the films that follow don't need to do that, so you'll probably get off on them even better :P

    I’m glad you guys liked it. One of my favorite Godzilla movies even if some people aren’t a fan of how it was done. The director Gareth Edwards made these monsters and scope of it all so good that it never really was replicated since. The reason they went with the blue balling cause they didn’t want to “blow their load” and went with the Jaws effect where you don’t see the Shark until the very end with a explosive finale. Check out Kong: Skull Island since it’s the next one in the current American series!

    I know a lot of people rag on this movie for how it conceals the kaiju and the fact that they kill off the dad so early, but honestly I think his screen time is perfect for the story. I adore this movie. The way it plays with suspense and the cinematic quality of the slow reveal is sooooo good. And I enjoy the human characters in this more than the sequels. They feel more subtle and grounded. And the opening scene is an absolute masterpiece. The rising tension, the drama, the death of the mom, the despair of the dad. It’s exceptional. And the slow reveal of the kaiju gives the final showdown so much gravity. You really feel the scale of their impact, honestly more than the sequels, which I enjoy for the spectacle in their own right.

    Next up in the Monsterverse is Kong: Skull Island. Kong is set in the early 70's. Also, Kong is only 100' tall in it but he's not full grown. Then it's Godzilla: King Of The Monsters and it has 3 of Godzilla's classic foes, Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah! The fourth movie is Godzilla vs Kong and the fights are epic. On Apple TV the series Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters is set in the 50's and after the events of Godzilla. It stars Kurt Russel and his son Wyatt playing the same character. Coming in April is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

    One of my fave moments of this movie (apart from the fight scenes) is when Big G noticed Brody and just shares this Look with him. Like, "...what a fricking day, man." It makes me chuckle every time.

    This movie did exactly what it was supposed to do as far as keeping Godzilla off screen as much as they could to build up the suspense. That being said once the monsters started fighting in the 3rd act, we should have actually seen them fighting a lot more instead of cutting away

    From the first glimpse of the fighting, it is clear to me that Godzilla was gong up against top adversaries and the next glimpse showed he was not doing well and getting his butt kicked, so I'm perfectly happy being spared seeing that and only seeing part of it and then when he finally gets the chance to start getting the best of them and winning.

    EMPs wouldn't be so devastating if we didn't outright abandon analog technology, just an example of trying to fix what already worked and creating more weaknesses. But it's still one of the best monster movies in years!

    it baffles me to no end that people criticized this at the time (and probably still do) because the human characters weren't interesting or developed enough. this is a movie about a giant radioactive lizard fighting 2 giant alien bugs

  • @Eidlones

    @Eidlones

    6 ай бұрын

    If that is what the movie is about, then why is 75% of the movie focused on the human characters? As well as not even showing the first fight between Godzilla and the MUTOs? Compare this to Minus 1. Minus 1 has even less monster action in it than this does, but it's one of my favorite Godzilla movies, because the characters and story are interesting. This one, the interesting character is killed 15 min into the movie, and is replaced by nothing. Also the humans are idiots. "These things eat radiation, and has shown to not be effected by nukes. Let's nuke them."

    @mahgeetahh Then make that point of view, the people we're following, interesting to watch. They aren't. Having a human perspective on these monsters is fantastic, but that can't be ALL there is. This is a 2 hour movie, not a 6min theme park ride.

    Fun fact about the Mutos despite looking like insects, the male and the female muto are not insects monsters. Both Mutos have skeletons on the inside of their bodies just like mammals and reptiles, insects have exoskeletons. The designers of the film based the Mutos design on insects and stealth fighters.
