I think the biggest issue with the soldier story is that Cranston's role really worked because he was obsessed with Godzilla, he needed to know the monsters existed, that the past incidents were monster attacks. The human story was completely linked with the monster story, but once it moves onto the son, all he wants to do is get to his family and he doesn't really care about the monsters at all aside from surviving them. That's why I feel Pacific Rim works, call it cheesy or silly but at least the story and characters were uniquely written around the premise of giant monsters.

I really think Bryan Cranston's obsessed character really worked as well. As soon as they killed him off, I felt like I was watching a different movie. I agree with you on everything you said. I dunno about "Pacific RIM" though, I saw it in theaters and I thought it was only okay, maybe because it was all CGI and the fights become tiring after a while. Maybe in my mind I think the humans are so stupid for making all these giant robots but never thought of making a big gun to go with the robots! lol think about it, they were always fist fights but a gun would finish them off! lol I will watch Pacific RIM again soon and see if I liked it better and let you know!

Funny you would say that, because I think Guillermo Del Torro should direct the the new Godzilla vs King Kong and/or the other Legendary Godzilla movie that's said to have Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidora. Because in Pacific Rim we had plenty of time with the human characters and got to know them, and when the Giant Robot vs Giant Monster action came, it was showed to us and it was awesome, kinda like what you said. Also why I'm saying this and if you guys didn't know, Gareth Edwards isn't doing anymore Godzilla projects.

Totally agree. What's up with Hollywood keep picking more and more generic athletic beefcake Mr. America as the protagonist of movies. I hate to say but the main guy in this movie makes me appreciate Jai Courtney and Channing Tatum. I thought Hollywood cannot possibly find more generic meat head than Jai Courtney already is, I was conclusively proven wrong. Do these interchangeable beefcake make good money for Hollywood or some kind of false feedback loop is going on among Hollywood executive circles? My suspicion is the later. But in any case, right now, I am rather curious how generic Hollywood can go when it comes to picking plain Jane and plain Joe for their movies

I know lots of people who have never seen Star Wars and don't even know the character's names. There's no reason to get upset because someone hasn't seen a show or know an actor, despite the fact that we live in a vast world with endless tv series/films. Sorry, but not everyone is going to know or care about Cranston. And James does have a life outside KZread with his friends and Family.

I know. And considering that the MAIN PROTAGONIST of all characters is a soldier in the army and it would make sense for the military/government officials to be the only ones going after these Kaijus, which barely anyone else knew existed, what was James expecting? He might as well complain that Aliens features too many shots of space marines or that Jaws has too much time focused on the fishermen. I have great respect for James Rolfe as one of my favorite film buffs and will still honor his opinion, but this is one of those rare instances where I do not get some of these criticisms that a reviewer is making. I am not saying this movie is perfect and I have a few issues myself, but some of it just came off as obsessive nitpicking or contradictory points being put forth.

Exactly, if there is romance in any of the Toho Godzilla movies, I don't for the life of me remember them. Probably because they didn't focus on them. We had main characters and a couple with a kid in Godzilla 2000, and we knew who they were, we remember who they were, and see??? Godzilla 2000 is just a wayyyyy better film than The Legendary Godzilla film! Americans have this problem where they have to have some big names in films, and they have to be the stars of the movie... Why??? Nobody cares about the human characters, if ur a fan of Godzilla, u wanna see Giant Monsters fighting! And if ur not a Godzilla fan, then get out of the theatre, cus u will not appreciate the film in any way shape or form anyways! Pacific Rim was awsome! And the Americans should've had that film in the back of their minds. But OMG what's their problem!!! Next thing u know they're gana have Ben Affleck and Niki Minaj come out as a couple in Godzilla and Michael Bay's gana direct it, and cus it's Michael Bay (Who is the biggest shit stain God farted out, that has this huge crush on Megan Fox), he's gana cast Megan Fox, n ur gana see 79% of her, 19% of the couple and 2% of the Monsters... I know that's awful to say, but that's how bad Hollywood is when it comes to taking something we love and then they smash it and drown it and make it so mainstream, full of advertisements it's just not even good anymore.

Love James and always respect his views! Gareth Edwards is very good at finding interesting ways to shoot things - and I loved the sky diving scene because that's exactly what he's doing there, finding a new way to shoot Godzilla that isn't from the ground upwards, but is believable. Along with the music, I totally understood how foreboding that mission would be for a soldier. I thought it was spine-tingling. There are other examples of him doing this. The second time I watched the movie, I spotted an amazing moment where the larger muto destroys a building and disappears inside a dust cloud, and just at that moment the winged muto lands, and the flap of it's wings blows away the dust cloud and reveals the other muto. Again, incredible visuals, finding a way to shoot these animals in a realistic but artistically interesting way. This is where the strength of the movie lies - the cinematography surrounding the mutos and godzilla is astounding. And... you don't know who Bryan Cranston is? That's amazing.

Quite a coincidence. I just started rewatching your Monster Madness 'Godzillathon' yesterday and was about to check out your previous review of the film. I pretty much agree on all points, except on Ken Watanabe. I actually thought he was wasted, since all he did in the movie was be 'that Japanese guy' who talks about Japanese things. He doesn't affect the plot in any way, nor does he really give any information that the army actually used. Really, his only purpose in the movie is for everyone to quote his 'Let them fight' in the trailer.

As a CGI-hater i have to admit: whenever Godzilla had a cameo in his own movie his CGI was breathtaking. 2014 Godzilla is easily the best non-background CGI i've ever seen. 'course - that only goes for the mostly-absent title character; the MUTOs look like a leftover from the early 2000s. Probably the reason they get so much screentime; their CGI must've been a hell of a lot cheaper or faster.

Back in July of 2014, less than 2 months after the film's release, Thomas Tull, CEO of Legendary Pictures and producer of "Godzilla 2014", confirmed in an interview that their would be an extended cut of "Godzilla 2014" released sometime in the future. Never again was it mentioned and I've yet to see it in stores. Since the sequel isn't coming out until 2019, I REALLY hope Legendary goes through with releasing that extended cut. While I still enjoy the original theatrical cut for what it is and what it tried to accomplish, it could definitely benefit from more scenes with Godzilla and, if we're really lucky, extended fight scenes between him and the MUTO's

You see them falling, then they reach Godzilla's head, then you realize they passed his head and are still falling fast. It's really cool because it shows that Godzilla is so big you could go sky diving off of him.

I was absolutely enthralled by this movie. I squealed when I saw it in theaters. I know it has some problems, but to me it feels like a real Godzilla movie. Even if it isn't the best, Legendary has definitely proven that they can make a Godzilla film worth watching.

I couldn't disagree more. I love the slow burn of this movie, I love the suspense of the cutaways and live the cinematography and the score. Let's be honest if you just want to see monsters fight for two hours watch Pacific Rim. But the slow burn monster movie is how I think they should be done. It woked for Alien and Jaws and it worked here. I do agree that killing Joe Brody was stupid. Also the DVD version is better lit in the end scenes than the blue ray.

I think it didn't work for Godzilla because it cut away from godzilla fighting with the muto. I'm fine with him being more suspenseful by himself, but teasing the audience with a fight scene, and then cutting away is just frustrating. It's like having an Alien vs Predator movie where every time the alien and predator encounter eachother, the movie cuts away before they fight.

Personally, I find the teasing to be really effective in creating an idea of scale and building tension, which then pays off with the finale. Being a person in the city when Godzilla appears would likely never really yield a clear vision in total of the monster, just bits and pieces. I also give that aspect a pass in a conceptual way since we know so well what we're expecting to see and also this is an intro film before this next upcoming chapter. If King of the Monsters delivers the monster action in spades, would it recontextualize this film?

I thought the movie was good overall, it's one of those "Godzilla's a good guy" movies, but it was a last-minute change from an R rated movie, many of the more gruesome Godzilla destruction scenes were cut, and as a result, Godzilla has less screentime. The movie had potential to a really great monster movie, nut they decided to appeal for mass-market instead.

I'll have to disagree with you on 6:27. I believe the scene was one of the only" soldiers doing things" scene that fit for what was happening. From an artist point of view, not only is the shot kinda aesthetic and nice to see through the skydiver's perspectives (which gives Godzilla more of that HUGENESS presence) but also it's likely symbolism of them descending into literal hell (hence the hooooo music)/the shitstorm happening on the ground which I think is kinda beautiful. I think it really set the tone for me for what was to come. Interesting review though.

He had this soundbite talking about how easily the US army could take down Godzilla. That the modern technology of the military could kill him and all this bullshit. Here's the fun part: they guy's name? Mabus. Fucking Mabus. Yes, like the third anti-christ Mabus. No really. Seriously. My only issue with the film was that the plot didn't revolve around Godzilla and instead made him a back up plan to the MUTOs. It was like this movie was a sequel to an origin Godzilla movie we never saw. That being said I actually love the MUTOs and was entertained throughout the movie. While I do love practical effects I can't really agree on the CGI not being good in this. The way it was shot and edited gave more of an impression of Godzillas size than you ever could with a miniature city. The destroyed city landscapes also looked massive and incredibly real. Overall while it may not make my top 5 favorite Godzilla movies, everything Godzilla in it was perfect to me and most of my issues with it can be easily fixed in the sequel. Bring on the sequels!

I really don't know why you didn't mention the fact that the director said he was trying to make this Godzilla movie have a Jaws theme, where you rarely see the monster. The problem with that is is that the only reason not seeing the monster too often worked with Jaws is because Jaws was under water. They had an excuse as to why the only part of the of the monster you saw was the fin was because you were seeing it mostly from the point of view of the people in the movie. That's why the Jaws theme worked well with The Thing. It's also why it worked so well in the movie Tremors. Because like Jaws, you only saw the Tremor creatures from the point of view of the people in the movie. Like Jaws, they had an excuse as to why you couldn't see the creatures, they were underground and that's what made it work as a good Jaws like movie. But you can't make a Godzilla move Jaws like. There's no good excuse for hiding the monsters from the audience because the monsters are massive giants! And that's why and how this movie dropped the ball. They tried to make it like Jaws, the directors words, not mine.

There's a lot of good points here, but there are still some arguments I took issue with. They didn't have Godzilla knock over buildings because they wanted the audience to like Godzilla. The one time Godzilla knocks over a bridge, it's because the navy was firing at him and he got mad and disoriented. While they had just enough collateral damage for Godzilla to be a hazard in a city, they definitely wanted to hit the note of "Reptar" and not "mindless engine of destruction". Also, reducing the number of Mutos to one kind of misses the point of them--the entire appeal of them and what makes them stand out among Kaiju is that they're a tag team. Iunno. Edwards *did* go overboard on trying to funnel all the monster action towards the end, making the middle suffer. However, the movie did ultimately give me what I wanted: an understanding of Godzilla's character. This movie *gets* Godzilla. This and Final Wars are the two truest attempts to capture everything Godzilla has ever been all at once. Hear, hear, to fulfilling Godzilla's potential. It's something I strongly believe in.
