GODZILLA (1954) Blu-rays vs. 4K Remaster

Фильм және анимация

I compare Toho's 4K restoration (sourced from Toho's downscaled 1080p Blu-ray) with its Blu-ray predecessors from Classic Media, Criterion Collection, and Toho Video.

The amount of DNR on the original Toho Blu-ray is astounding. They wanted to get rid of all the scratches but by applying that much DNR they obliterated much of the detail. It made a bad transfer even worse

So my two picks would be between Criterion and 4K remaster Japan, their are certain scenes that one does right over the other. Makes me wish their was a supercut between the two.

Classic Media. Got to give them props for their releases, which were the best Godzilla looked at the time and still hold up.

The Japanese 4K remaster has undoubted improvements in deflickering and contrast uniformity. Contrast levels could go either way with the Criterion Blu-ray and the 4K. I have read that the DNR applied to the 4K has taken away detail that would otherwise be captured, (mainly skin texture) so the detail level between the Criterion Blu-ray and the 4K is closer than it otherwise could have been. I thought that Criterion's Japanese source was the Hi-vision scan used for the Toho Blu-ray, but the Toho Blu-ray looks much softer than the Criterion. As for the Classic Media release, kill that improper aspect ratio, interlaced formatted disc with fire.

Godzilla 1954 is the only Japanese film in Criterion's Showa Era collection that doesn't use Toho's Hi-vison sources. Disc 1 of the set just recycles everything they used from Criterion's 2012 standalone release. Not sure of the exact source of that print, though.

@@mrpopsicleman I know the 35mm print of the US version that was used came from "a collector", as for the Japanese version, I assumed we were seeing a slightly-touched up Hi-vision, but that cannot be the case.

Criterion sourced their restoration from duplicated 10-reel positive provided by Toho.

No, Criterion didn't use the Hi-Vision masters. They used a duplicated 10-reel positive provided by Toho.

Whats wrong with the Classic Media one. From what I see here it looks classic with the scratches. Wheres it cropped though?

Huh...this is a very difficult choice on which ONE is better than the others. Cuz the release I'm familiar with the most is Classic Media's. And not the other three. I have to say Criterion's is the better one, the clarity is much better but suffers from being too dark in some spots. Classic Media's is way too "soft" but do keep in mind that this was the first time that the original Godzilla film was release on Blu-ray in the US. Plus, I think it was an HD transfer of their DVD release. I can excuse the flaws due to being an older release anyways. but still... Toho's Blu-Ray release is slightly better than Classic Media's but severely out-classed by Criterion's. The 4K Remaster fixes up the issues with their 1st Blu-ray release to a higher degree. However it does look a bit too bright in some spots & the detail quality has taken a wee bit of a hit but nothing too drastic. So all-in-all, Criterion & Toho's 4K Remaster is the definite winners. But I'm personally sticking with Classic Media's for nostalgia's sake.

Sorry to see that your Internet Archive account was wiped, my sons and I really enjoyed watching your collection of Godzilla dubs. I grew up with the Showa Era vhs's myself and we've got some of the newer dvds, but the quality of your uploads was spectacular and has been a great way for them to experience the series. You can tell there was a lot of time and hard work put into them, thanks so much for sharing! Sad to say that I didn't have the sense to download them when I had a chance, do you think you'll re-post them there again or maybe somewhere else?

I wonder if the quality in the videos between American and Japanese isn't so much of where the print is sourced from but more from the programs used and their settings when doing the clean up work.

Well for starters the print that Classic Media used was a really shitty print used for the Rialto pictures release that waa damaged at the top of the picture, while the Toho and Criterion Blurays used a slighty better print but was a dupe print, around 3rd or 4th generation from the now extinct OCN, the 4k used a print that was 2nd Gen so looked better but it had missing footage

Hoping for the 4Ks to make it out of Japan within my lifetime. Both for the Kaiju movies, but also the Kurosawas from a few years ago.
