Godox Triggers ULTIMATE Comparison (X1T X2T XPro R2ProII Transmitters)

Комедия

A new updated version of this video: • EVERY Godox Trigger VS...
Godox now has four different flash triggers/transmitters available for their X series (or R2 series for Flashpoint/Adorama) lighting system. But which one is best? Or is there even a best? We're going to take a super deep dive into the X1T vs X2T vs XPro vs XPro2 (also known as the R2, R2 markII, R2 Pro, and R2 Pro markII) to see how they measure up, from inside out, to see which one might be right for you! And be warned: we're going in Really deep here.
If you feel like picking one of these up, feel free to use one of my affiliate links to help support this channel, and feed my fat cats. Also, BE SURE TO BUY THE RIGHT VERSION FOR YOUR CAMERA! There are separate editions of each for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, etc, denoted by the letter after the product name. Such as X1T-s for Sony or X1T-c for Canon.

Wes I just found your channel after I looked up use for the glow ez lock system, but your info on the godox as well as the info on the glow system has been great! I just recently switched from using my godox 860 ii on the camera and as the trigger for my ad200pro to using the r2 pro 2. I have been super happy. I do wish the trigger had the side buttons for ease of use but it’s not bad. I use a different brand shutter trigger that I have clipped to my stand and it works great. Also super cheap. One thing I love with the godox/flashpoint triggers is I have a couple r2 single pin triggers and I use some of my old flashes with these for color or highlights in studio shoots where I didn’t need to worry about the power just getting the splash (usually I have the set low ahead of time) but very handy while I build up my godox line of flashes I should mention I have been shooting REP for 3 years and working to get into portrait, headshot, and other forms of photography. Do you shoot hdr, flash, flambient, or a mix for your REP

Excellent content and I thought your execution was fantastic. I only use the R2 Pro Mark II (R2 Pro II), because of laziness. I also have the R2 Mark II (X2T). I have the X2T for two reasons: (1) to share my units when shooting with a fellow photographer, and (2) the form factor. You mentioned how the form factor helps in navigating tight spaces but there is another where it comes in handy. Using a flash bracket. Because of the cold-shoe to extend the flash away from the camera lens' axis, you need either a sync cord or a transmitter of some sort. The low form factor of the X2T works perfectly. Naturally, after I've gotten the X2T, I've not needed the flash bracket and have not taken the time to learn the X2T. Maybe this video will inspire me. Looking forward to the charger video.

I have both the XT2 and FlashPoint R2 Pro2 imported from Adorama to the UK. Total cost was just over £100GBP including shipping and taxes and while that's roughly double the US price it's still cheap for a high-end trigger and well worth it IMHO. The Pro2 has more features than any other Godox trigger but I would say its main appeal is the number of direct-access buttons, with far less menu-diving and messing about with short-press/long-press actions. It's way more intuitive. It doesn't have a pass-through hotshoe of course, so I also have the XT2 for that and as back-up, bearing in mind how easy it is to drop and damage a trigger. Pro2 is the only trigger to have all these features: TCM, delay function (essential for HyperSync), 2nd curtain sync, modeling LED control, channel scan, BlueTooth, plus a few others. BTW, the two flash firing buttons are not duplicates - top button fires the selected group only, bottom button fires all groups. ps What's the word on non-rechargeable lithiums? Photo-forums seem to say they're the best option for Godox triggers.

Thanks Wes for the tour inside the system, i enjoyed it a lot ! i had to send back my X Pro (F) because of too many flash failure : 1 out of 4 photo wasn't flashing . Now with the X2t it's much better almost perfect ! I should scan every time before a shoot . I thought that it is not necessary because I put an ID, but I will rather do a scan from now on . I'm using the APP mode because I got a Sekonic L858D with the RT-GX module. Every moves are made by the Sekonic . I hope Godox can make a small trigger configured for the "APP" use case with a battery owner .

  • @WesPerry

I wanted to know if you can confirm if the X2T trigger has fixed the white balance issue the XPro trigger suffers from, or as it's a different range to the XPro, it's irrelevant? If you're unsure what I mean the XPro with my Nikon D750 and AD200 Pro (I'm in Australia so have no access to Adorama) will produce overly warm photos, workarounds I have tried don't work so was looking at getting rid of the XPro and getting an X2T. With the camera on a tripod low down you have to get on your knees to stand any chance of being able to read the screen. For this reason I'm probably going to get an Xpro.

Wanting to get back into flash. Hesitant on Godox because I had the xt1 and 2 tt600's and had a lot of reliability issues. Either it would make the adjustments from the trigger or the flashes would pop. Sometimes both sometimes one would go off but not the other. I don't need a bunch of fancy buttons, just a system that works when I need it to.

Thanks for the detailed review of the Godox triggers Wes. My Flashpoint R2 Pro II Nikon trigger has FTF issues every now and then but the X2T has been rock solid, I just wish it had the TCM function. I should add my R2 Pro II must be v1 as it has the screw down locking hot shoe collar. One other point, the Godox BT app allows you to set the flash in decimal rather than fractional settings however, this function is not ported through to all of their flash and transmitter models, seems like they are a bit slow on the firmware updates to take advantage of this. BTW, I also use my Pocket Wizard MiniTT1 mounted on the X2T hoe shoe for my legacy strobes.

Interesting. I didn’t even know there was a version of the Pro II with the screw down collar. I think all but the X1T will allow decimal control. I can’t say I ever use that, personally. For the work I do it’s more important to be able to make big changes quickly than to make super fine adjustments.

@@WesPerry Check out this page when it was introduced with the screw lock, flashhavoc.com/flashpoint-r2-pro-mark-ii-transmitter-for-nikon-now-available/. As far as decimal control, neither of my Flashpoint R2 Mark II or my Godox X2T triggers will display decimal flash output, only fractions. Additionally none of my AD600Pro's, ASD400Pro's or Ad200 will display decimal output and there is no menu item to change it. The only device that shows decimal output is the Godox BT app but since it doesn't transmit this directly to the triggers or flashes its kinda pointless. I get what Godox is trying to do, mimic Profoto's power output setting but until everything in the ecosystem can actually display decimal output, it will be fractions and I'm okay with that. For actual power output 1/10 steps is actually the same and has legacy understandability such as 1/8+0.6 rather than 7.6. This again just shows that Godox need to work on the last 10% of the implementation to finish the job.

I have the Pro II, and it’s mostly great (I do like the TCM feature for when I’m too lazy to use a light meter); however I recently found a use case which makes me want to get the X2T. With the camera on a tripod in portrait orientation, the angle of the Pro models is just all wrong. I have to step to the side of the camera to see and use the screen and buttons. With X2T, I think I’ll be much happier to have consistent view and access to all the camera and flash controls from the same rear vantage point regardless of camera orientation. Of course, handheld this is no big deal as flipping the camera orientation from accessing controls to taking the shot is pretty natural and quick. And as you point out, it would be convenient to have a place to park my remote shutter receiver instead of just leaving it dangling from the cord. Oh, one other gripe on the Pro series. Yeah, the dial sucks. It’s just way too small to work well on the flat. Heck, my thumb is bigger than the wheel. It looks like operating the X2 wheel from the edge rather than its face will be much easier to scroll through multiple stops. Thanks for the detailed review and the super geeky lesson on batteries!

I have the X1T, X2T, and now the Pro MKII. I don't have the original pro but I think it suffers the same problem the X2T has. You have look at the trigger, select, say the A button, then move your finger a long way to reach the dial. With the Pro MKII, my thumb naturally finds the center select button and from there it is an easy move to the A button without looking. I think over time it will be even more intuitive and muscle memory will be easy. One feature that returned Hi-Sync or flash delay. I wish you would talk more about this.

Some of your videos are too long for most viewers. I like your long reviews, but if you are interested in subscriptions and growth, you have to create something more people will want to see. You could produce an additional video for each review and limit the duration of that. Ideally you should limit duration of the main video instead. Extensive reviews and tutorials are not very competitive on youtube. Then, there is the psychology issue. Viewers do not really want to hear about the drawbacks of products they want to buy, especially if these appear to be minor. What is more important, they dont want to hear about the drawbacks of products they have already bought. For commercial success in youtube, you have to be very positive in the approach of the product if it is not comically flawed. Basically, you are selling a personality, not information. Information that is useful to a professional or a.technically minded viewer, can be a turn off on the personality front for the majority of viewers.

multi camera support is a very tricky thing. i got myself cactus triggers, like 7y ago, they were the first to be multi camera support triggers, i was using it happily on nikon, canon, fuji. its all great, until it isnt. although its so versatile it was lacking basic things like: 1. didnt have AF asssist - i do lots of events and it was a bummer, eventually I was using cactus for photoshoots only, coz in events it was failing miserably. 2. doesnt have ttl, although i use M only at all times there were few situations when TTL would save my butt and using M was very painful. 3. reliability was bit behind, didnt trigger at all times. There were couple more things I forgot. What I have learned fit all is never great, it is just good enough. And it applies to every sphere in life, is it tool, car, appliance, more specified it is the better it will perform. Esp camera brands, being so rigid and stuck to their system instead of following the mobile phone industry - there were times when every phone had its own charged, at least for a decade, till finally the usb standard was introduced, same could be applied to photography world, some kind of base standards: hot shoe, battery, distance between camera and mirror etc. oh well... :)

Thanks for this very complete comparison! I have a question. I bought an XPro-P to put on my Pentax bodies to fire a brand new AD100Pro mini strobe. I am used to Paul Buff triggers and strobes and while they are strictly single center pin gear, the shutter-to-flash times are near instantaneous. But with the Godox kit there's easily a 100 to 200 millisecond delay or lag from clicking the shutter to the flash firing. By experimenting I determined that the bulk of that delay is in the XPro-P itself since I can sense the shutter-button to actual-shutter lag with the flash not even on or being fired. Simply turning the XPro trigger on causes the shutter to start lagging immediately. I am using a single group, A, the flash is set to M, no ID, no HSS, no fancies at all. I plan to next try reducing this to a single pin flash by taping the pins to see what effect that has. I hear that that workaround "fixes" the delay. I also hear through the grapevine that the X2T has had a firmware update to eliminate or reduce this delay. But that firmware has not migrated backward to the XPro-P. So my question is: did you try measuring the camera trigger to remote flash trigger times at all?

  • @WesPerry

I like to use the non rechargable FR06 (AA) lithium batteries because of how much lighter they are. It's not that the difference in weight makes any huge difference all in all, but on a lighter camera setup the extra weight on top front of the camera kind of disturbs the balance. On stuff like the APS-C Fujis and Sonys when combined with pancake lenses it can be quite significant. I don't use rechargeables since I don't shoot with them that often and thus the self-discharge of e.g. a NiMH would have me recharge them more often than I need to replace an alkaline or lithium battery. It's a shame the red focusing help lights doesn't work with mirrorless cameras. I wonder how having a mode that engages the modeling lamps only when focusing would work.

  • @WesPerry

    @WesPerry

Unfortunately the incompatibility comes mostly from the camera manufacturer and not the flash/transmitter manufacturer. There needs to be a pin active on the shot shoe to tell the flash when to activate the focus assist, but that pin can only activate in AF-S mode for some reason...presumably that’s something that a camera firmware update could fix, but...it’s been a while now, so I wouldn’t expect much.
