Thank you for answering my question. I never had trouble with the bridge moving when I changed the strings on my early 1960s Gibson ES125TC 30 years ago. People were complaining this bridge moved. Obviously they didn't mention they took all the strings off at once. Thank you for this informative video. Started playing 47 yrs ago. Still learning. Looking forward to watching your other videos. Hope you're still making videos.
Dave- This is the type of work I would like to do as I get older. I'm just a teenager with a love for guitars, but I cant get enough of your videos. Great stuff man, you're my favorite KZreadr! Cheers!
Nice! Love how you fixed a big part of it my measuring the scale length. I learn something on every vid.
Cheers from 🇨🇦. Thanks for the great info!
I love your dirty bench!! Great job!
You are as educational as you are entertaining.
I was introduced to your videos on a forum with your 8 string ironingboard video. They where beating you up there, those 7 and 8 string guys have no sense of humor.I agree with your setup practices, gotta love those guys that take a pair of snippers to the strings at full tension, and then wonder what happened?? Wow love that old Kay!
At $300 this thing is a steal! I fell in love with one today. It stood out because it was flat black and I had never jammed on an acoustic guitar with the F holes.I played a lot of fast blues with big bends and thought each note was really clear and every where on the board was easily played even thought it needed a setup.I just wish the price was a little lower but still its an awesome guitar at about $500.
This is the nicest most comfortable guitar I have ever played. I loved it so much i also picked up the kngpin2 With 2 pickups. i really like the look of the new ones with the tremolo bar!
I have a 5th Ave. and I fuckin love it. Mine is louder and sounds better than most dreads. Of course I have it set up with Earthwood 80/20 medium lights 12-54. Perfect match.
Thanks Man, YOU are the right tool
thxxx for the videoooo dave!!! now i can sleep
A messy work bench is the sign of a busy man. I put everything away where it belongs when I'm not working, which is rare.
Dave Thnak you!
You know, Dave, I had been thinking about the Graphtech nut and bridge used on these guitars, and I am wondering if the harder, bright sounding appointments would produce a brighter sound, which is not what I would want to use for Jazz. What do you guys think? Thanks for the videos.
As always very interesting. And your bench is way cleaner than mine, but then you have been cleaning up a lot lately. One thing though, not sure about the "film noir" lighting.
You may not set up archtops much...the placement of the bridge almost always is to line up the center of the foot of the bridge with the cut in the middle of the F-hole.
I had an archtop where the bridge was missing, the way to find where it should be is to measure from the nut to the 12th fret, then repeat that same measurement from the 12th fret to the guitar body. That is referred to as the "scale" eg Gibson scale, fender scale. Many archtops are based around the gibson numbers, so I would guess yours might be 24-3/4" full measure from nut to bridge. The bridge does not have to line up with the f-holes.
Dyed-in-the-wool Canadian!! I love it! GREAT lesson, extremely helpful, thanks.
THAT'S who he reminds me of...Groucho Marx is my favorite comedian, and now he's my favorite guitar tech. That's my friendly compliment of the day..
Hi Groovy Dave, How are ya ! =), another great guitar video man, love them, everytime i learn something new with your videos this time it was the sound of the tusk compared to the plastic nuts, interesting stuff indeed, its interesting that you say its better then bone because bone is supposed to be the best material but heck i could hear a big difference between the plastic and the tusk...and your missing a slide!, just take a wine or bear bottle and cut the neck its easy as pie man,Cheers!!!
Kewl, I saw the factory tour on How's that Made. Nice mix of hand work and computerized machines.
@davey4557 They were designed to cut through all the noise of a 1920 jazz club I'd say it is loud. I think they have a resonator in the body to make them louder. They are very cool guitars the look is very Art Deco
What I call my "workbench" my wife calls our dining room table. If I leave it cluttered with guitar stuff, she makes me eat in the garage. ;^) Thanks for the video Dave.
Perhaps the selling price brand new was 500.$ US 12 years ago. And to say that you would not have paid pay 500. for this sensational Godin (in comparison to other brands) is astonishing to me. This said, thank for showing how to revive it.
Teisco's are Japanese guitars from the 80's, they were known for having their own unique sound due to their pickups that people either love or hate, they basically act as microphones, you can literally talk through them, they can be worth $120.00 - $400.00 on average, sometimes more for certain models, and Seagulls were always Canadian made
thank you so much Dave! I'm considering putting a floating pickup on mine. What kind would you recommend? I like the Kent Armstrong slimbucker side mount. ( I've heard mixed things about them) I don't know if you have a video where you install one, I'll have mind professionally done. But is there a certain pickup you can recommend, or what should I look for in a pick up? Thank you so much for all your help and keep up the good work!
Dave I have a godin fifth Ave. my problem is it has the black pickups that are not adjustable and result is string height is too high because you can’t lower bridge anymore without hitting pick up. Truss rod is correct setting I’m wondering about neck height adjustment. Can this be done. I bought Guitar New Years ago n has maybe two hours playing on it cuz I have 18 other guitars. Any advice
Made in Canada, which is also North America but uses the metric system.
Canada uses the metric system. The guitar is made in Canada. It's not an engineering blunder.
I'm so conflicted right now, I'm seriously gasing over that Godin but that Gypsy guitar is also a seriously a cool guitar
How about showing how to fit the bridge to the contour of the top.. never have seen a Godin with a stock bridge that fit.Tusq, bone, wood.. if they don't fit makes little difference what the material might be.
nice guitar..!
A messy work-area, like that bench, is a sign of creativity and intelligence. Scientifically proven!
Just posted a comment and came to the sudden realization, you didn't use the "S" bomb or anything else. Your Mother would be so proud.
godin's are made in canada and sell alot to europe, of course they are metric!
Also the Seagull guitars are made in the same factory by the same company
Hello please answer my question, I want to put on the bridge Kent Armstrong jazz Pickups mini humbucker, neck pickup and bridge pickup are the same or are they different? thank you very much.
@davey4557 What kind of blues is what you are playing at the end of the video? I was thinking of buying a 5th avenue but maybe I'll go for a Kay. Are there many problems do think I might encounter by buying and old used Kay? Even it seems to be in perfect shape? I mean, do you think the Kay uses quality components in there guitars and I might not have to worry to much about the bridge, neck and tuners if everything is aparently alright? Thank you very much!
dave what was the size allen wrench we need to adjust the trus rod? I was a little confused.
I have one of these guitars and I cant fix the intonation since i got the strings off. I lined up the bridge with the f holes but it still isn't perfect, and very noticeable. Any tips?
do you think this guitar would be loud enough to keep up with an acoustic jam? like bass another guitar and a cajun box drum? i love the look but im worried about the volume lol

Dave's World of Fun Stuff thanks for the quick reply lol i assume its around half the volume of a regular dreadnought acoustic?
I bet if you put acoustic light strings on it it would sound much better. This video is 12 years old though so never mind. That guitar is now worth about $800 give or take.
Okay, that's now, but where were Seagulls made years ago? The originals? Know anything about Tiesco's? Looking to buy one, don't have a clue what they're worth. The one I'm looking at is is decent shape ... for it's age ... but could still use some cleaning and minor cosmetic touch ups.
what no steel wool used in this video?
You are so fucking funny, I just want to hang out with you. drinking Molson, playing bass and 420.
Hi I just purchased a new Godin 5th Ave. And wanted your opinion. Do you recommend changing the bridge to a different one? (i.e. StewMac, or Beneditto?) I need to change strings and it doesn't stay in tune. I don't know if the bridge is off. I've heard its recommended to put a different bridge on this particular model. What do you suggest? Thank you!

After 12 years of your comment, you might have the perfect solution. In any case, search for other videos to get your answers...
Use earthwoods or some dean markley's. Earthwoods are a nice nound on this guitar. I use .010's on mine.
Mine has a P90 pickup at the neck. You’re missing a part!
The Godin w p90 pickup is $800 now.
Godin's used to be made in Canada. Is that one, or are only the really expensive ones still made there?

That series is indeed made in Princeville, Québec, a few kilometres from where I live.
@davey4557 i know i need to i just hate getting it done so i wear a tuque to cover it up
@davey4557 cool man thanks for the info! :)
what's that all aboot?
Sounds better with a neck pickup, set up for jazz...Better to get the 5th avenue and add a great pickup, then the kingpin with a body mounted pickup. But I'd still only pay $300 for the guitar.
I thought at one time Seagulls belonged to some other company and were US made, but that's all rumor. It's hard to know what's true and not on here. The Tiesco I'm looking at is a model 110 with a serial number in the 1800 range. Can't find a lookup for it, don't know what year it was made. Definitely sixties, how early, don't know. Might get it, might not, price is under negotiation, nearly to 120 level now. Just to be on the safe side, I don't think I'll go more than that until I know for sure
don't know why but when u said u got the squirrel shaved off your head the first thing i thought of was bubbles on trailer park boys
I was suckered into buying the Godin Multiac acoustic/electric nylon string guitar to play as a classical guitar. Godin claimed this guitar had a true nylon string guitar sound. Only after buying it and trying to get an acoustic/nylon sound out of it with no luck did I find out Godin wants you to buy an expensive synth to get a true nylon guitar sound. I wrote the company to show my displeasure with their product, and got a basic reply of, "So"? I sold the guitar and was glad to get rid of it. I see the importance of "buyer beware".
Why would you put electric guitar strings on that acoustic hollow body ? No wonder it sounds thin.
All of them are Canadian made
I like him hees funny!
could you put nylon strings on one of these
@gutbucket260
6 жыл бұрын
You could put fishing line on it, but that doesn't mean it will sound worth a shit.
Doubtful you could buy one for 500 new, the single pickup model, identical except for the pickup sold for 1000 bucks, great steal at 300. And it is supposed to be strung with 12/52 nickel wound strings.
@davey4557 oh fuck i bet did u spike it the cheep way yet? were u get yur hair wet then stick it in snow lol
Clean bench is a sign of a sick mind...
his is an all Canadian guitar and it beats the hell out of any American made guitar, top quality Canadian woods excellent guitar
That's tusq as opposed to tusk right? Anyway, I can't call you bonehead anymore and tusqhead just isn't the same.
The Godin---Nahhh--- But: F You See Kay, Tell Her I Love Her.--Cheers
"Godin" = accent on 2nd syllable
WOW!!! Tusk..tusque,tusc nuts rock... I need those on all my guitars soI can joke at all the guys playing with their plastic nuts
The shitty ole' Kay sounds way better, IMO. Not shitty at all if you ask me.
That husk nut makes this guitar NOT Vegan approved. Don't sell it to Paul McCartney.
Everybody's a fucking critic....
The world is Metric
