Teresa, respectfully, it is true that God promises "a land flowing with milk and honey". There are many Bible verses that explain how God truly wants us to be prosperous: Deut 8:18 "But remember the Lord your God for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which He swore to your ancestors"; 1 Kings 2:3 says "and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to Him, and keep His decrees and commands, His laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go; Luke 16:10 says "Whoever can be trusted with little, can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with little will also be dishonest with much". And in Jeremiah 32-41 we read "Yes, I will rejoice in doing them good". So you see, not only God promises a land flowing with milk and honey, but He also rejoices in doing His people good. Because God is good. Now, having said this, all churches of all denominations promote tithing - even those that criticize Joel Osteen and his church as "prosperity gospel". They're all very much in the same business. However, a few Theologians agree that tithing itself (giving 10% of your income) is an Old Testament, ceremonial law that no longer applies (the Apostle Paul even describes how he himself worked for money while preaching the gospel and encouraged the Church and his disciples to do the same). The reason God implemented tithing in the first place is because He assigned the priesthood responsibilities to the Levites, who were not supposed to own any land. They had no means for living other than the tithing coming from the Israelite community. Today, even the poorest of pastors at least owns a home or a car and nobody is asking them to give their possessions up like God demanded from the Levites. So tithing is no longer necessary. However, it doesn't mean we shouldn't give to the Church - not 10% as the tithing principle demanded, but however much you can, according to your means. The objective today is not so much to support the pastor's entire family (thousands of them in OT times), but rather to promote Christianity, help the poor, and so on. And Joel Osteen's church is doing a great job in advancing God's kingdom - and the reason I support this Church. Joel was my first pastor and my TV was my first church. I do think that linking your giving with your receiving is a stretch, that could be interpreted in the wrong way. We need to be cheerful givers regardless of how much prosperity God decides to give us. You want to give for the right reasons. But I also don't agree with other denominations that tell you "you're robbing from God" if you don't give. It is true that Malachi 3:8 says this, but it's said in the context of the annual requirement to bring 1/10th of the agricultural produce. Again, this was meant to feed all the Levites, one of Israel's tribes. In sum, if we interpret the tithing as a mandate, then all pastors must donate ALL their possessions because the same mandate that requires tithing demands Priests (Pastors) to own nothing. I don't see many pastors willing to do that, even those conservative ones who trash Joel right and left. But if pastors are allowed to own possessions, then it's clear that tithing is no longer necessary, but giving is - if we want to advance God's Kingdom.

God has plans for everybody. I'm divorced and I may or may not find another husband, but the right attitude is "Thy will be done", not ours. Sometimes we don't understand God's plans but one thing is for sure: they're better than ours. You may not know this but Lisa Osteen was born with cerebral palsy, for which doctors said she'd never be able to walk or talk. She's also divorced and re-married, was never able to conceive children (she adopted) and she survived a mail-bomb that was sent to Lakewood when her father, John Osteen, was still alive. Had she opened the package some other way, she would have been instantly killed. I don't know what you're going through, but I do know this: you can trust Jesus. You don't know if He prevented bad men from hurting you in the past, or worse. I know that Jesus works behind the scenes and He loves us too much to expose us. But when He does allow some bad things to happen, it's usually a test or to bring us closer to Him. I don't know what your situation is, but trust that there's a purpose.
