The plot isn't weak in the slightest. Hannah is just oversimplifying it to its most summarized form. You could condense all of the Lord of the Rings trilogy into "Evil ring. Throw into volcano." despite the LOTR trilogy being one of the best written stories of all time. You can do this absurd reductionism for any complex and great story and it would superficially appear stupid. She just didn't like the game or story which is fine, but to call the plot weak or poorly written is comically ridiculous.

Isn’t the fact that Kratos and Atreus even considered to complete the task mom gave them enough to infer what her relationship was with them? You’re right that it’s not a reasonable thing to ask of them to do, but they did it anyways despite knowing there would be danger. I feel like it’s a great example of show, don’t tell. Faye didn’t need to be alive in the game to understand what her relationship with Kratos and Atreus was like. They talk about her throughout the game as well, and I still think that is enough to understand what she was to them

The mother is involved from the very beginning. All the hand symbols on the trees that were cut down for her pyre, the Norse symbols that lead your way through the game. When she died her protection stave went away, which is why Baldur shows up, the Asgardian's could sense a Jotnar on Midgard, which they thought had all disappeared or died. You find all this out later in Jotunheim when you look at the murals and realize that the Mother had foreseen their journey from the beginning and who they would meet along the way. But as others have mentioned, the story isn't about the mother. It is about Kratos coming to terms with his past and accepting being a father and Atreus, who believed his father didn't care, understanding his father better and what drives him. They somewhat achieve that by the end though the two of them still have issues that continue in the next game, no spoilers.

I think the point of the mother dying isn't so much that you don't care about her, but that the characters do, and you're supposed to empathize with their grief. If you've ever dealt with the loss of a loved one, you could imagine embarking on such a journey while dealing with so much grief over their loss. In a way, not seeing her allows the player to insert the memories of their own feelings of loss into the game's narrative. It makes the player feel as though they're more connected to the narrative. Part of the game is having the player prepare her funeral pyre rather than just watching a cut scene. They then go on that journey because it was her last request, and it shows how much they loved her they they'd go to the ends of the earth to fulfill it. It's the process they need to follow to move forward with their lives, past the grief and into a larger world beyond their protective cabin in the woods. Atreus needs to grow up and enter the world and Kratos needs to stop hiding from his past and help his son become an adult, now he has to do so without his wife's help.

I think why the story is not working for you is because GOW's story revolves around Kratos' past. So fans of the franchise will "feel" the story more than newcomers of the game. It is about Kratos' acceptance of his past and becoming a better person moving forward. That alone is a great story for them. It is also a reason why it won GOTY that year.

I just think fans overrate the story. Its fine, but its more about Krato's relationship with his son then anything else. Ragnarok might be better, i wont know until its on pc, but i certainly wouldnt put this god of war up there as an all time great video game story.

i disagree about newcomers not feeling connected. i've seen plenty of newcomers who knew next to nothing about the first games get very invested in their relationship and kratos' growth. i myself only knew the very basics (GOW was about geek mythology, he's angry, there are sex mini-games, he's a spartan) and i got majorly invested. his past and his personality are extremely easy to glean from the first few moments of the game; terse, short, and distant with his son, he feels grief for his wife but hides it in front of atreus, he also hides his scars from atreus showing that he's ashamed. you don't need to know the specifics to connect

@@creaturecore13 Ragnarok being better is a bit of point of contention especially for fans like me who has been with GoW since the first, one hand I see a lot of good within it on the other I think it tries to juggle a ton in a single game.. like did the Ragnarok plotline really need to end in the second game? Idk about others but the final act feels rushed kinda feels like a Marvel movie at times which bugged TF out of me.. what I was most disappointed about however is Thor and Kratos specifically their apparent rivalry or lack thereof(which I guess is my fault but there it is anyways)

The story isn't about Atreus' mom, it's about Kratos and Atreus. She sent them to do this incredibly difficult task because she knew that it would bring them closer, and they had a very tenuous, strained relationship. She didn't want them to live in the same house but be strangers to each other. Bare-bones, the plot is "the god of war and his son travel to spread their loved-one's ashes on top of a mountain". But then there's also the plot thread of Baldur and the other gods consistently trying to get in your way or hurt you.

I hardcore disagree with the mum thing, the fact she is dead and they go on this journey while dealing with grief is the emotional backbone of the story. This is a story of a father and son learning how to live, and to deal with each other, after losing her. And the kind of relationship was obvious, no one would go to such great lengths to honour such a last wish if it wasn't someone they truly loved and respected.

For a writer it really puzzles me how Hannah seem to miss things like these. It was the same with the episode 3 of the Last of Us. Sure the episode didn't bring them closer to their physical goal, but it set up the central theme of the whole series and the letter Joel got in the end was hugely impactful and important for the relationships going forward. I don't think Hannah is the best at stories where the focus is on the development of the characters relationships.

Without Fays death there would actually be no story. The game is about a father and son coming to terms with her gone, growing their relationship from zero to something beautiful and Kratos finding the courage to forgive himself to move on and be an available father for his son. It is also many other things on the side, like overprotective parents ruining their childrens lives, vengance being a poison for the people employing it and caising often intergenerational trauma, about how power corrupts, about the importance of borders in childrearing, about our fear that our mistakes will shape our children into us, etc. But to say this game has no story is the most nonsense take I ever heard about this game.

There is no reason to care about mom, Kratos and Atreus are the protagonist. It's not a story about revenge. You care about the mom's Ashes because Kratos and Atreus care about the ashes, and you care or grow to care about them. It's about fulfilling someone's last wishes to honor them, and the mom setting them upon a journey that she knew they would embark in, or was fated. The plot, like Mad Max Fury Road, is about the Journey from point A to B, a d the obstacles in between that cause a father and son to bond.

The set up for the main quest is one of a classical Romance story. In literary terms a romance is a narrative genre in literature that involves a mysterious, adventurous, or spiritual story line where the focus is on a quest that involves bravery and strong values, not always a love interest. The request to spread the ashes on the highest peak of the realms may seem like an unreasonable ask, but to someone with a romantic world view it will seem poetic and Kratos and Atraus are both boys who don't fear what they probably think is mild danger in the beginning. The fact that you don't see the relationship with the mother is usually not that big of a deal if the two on screen characters show their relationship with the missing character.

As we discover, it is possible she chose to die herself, so her baby would not have to be the one dying. In all of GoW 1 Faye is all around all the time. With all the family-development going on, she also would have been a little bit "in the way". (From a story-telling point of view.)

I disagree with your assesment of the story, and I don't see how Fey being alive would improve it, since how this loss brought together estranged father and son is such a strong emotional hook. But I guess I just prefer character driven storytelling more, than plot driven, and that's probably where we differ. I strongly believe that weak (or nonexistent) plot with great characters still makes for a good story, unlike a great plot with basic characters. That being said, I think you might get the plot you want from the second game :wink-wonk:

On the question of whether it would fit the story better for Faye (Atreus' mother, Kratos' wife) to be alive, I think that a LOT of what makes her character interesting and mysterious is that we ultimately have few answers about her thoughts and intentions. We know her motivations, we know the source of her hatred, and we know WHY she wanted a weapon the equal of Mjolnir (which the Leviathan Axe implicitly is), and we know what she's done; pretty much everything else is a huge mystery. We don't know if she, say, set up her husband and son to die in the pursuit of vengeance and fate, as an example, or if she set it up after her death to reveal the truth to them and let them make their own decisions. From the mythological elements of the game, whether or not a firmer grasp of her character is necessary asks its own question: is the story of the Liesmith important for Laufey, or just what he THINKS she wanted? (On that topic, certain revelations about Atreus' nature make it difficult to talk about him at all from an in-depth point of view, but suffice to say that viewing him as untrustworthy is... mythologically appropriate, because if you know your Norse myth, you KNOW it's always Atreus' fault, so to speak. He is quite lucky he didn't get his mouth sewn up! Though I don't think we ever find out why his mouth is scarred.) On the subject of the wolves, it begs the question; while I don't believe they're TECHNICALLY related to Atreus in this version, as for their mythological counterparts, I'm not sure if its appropriate to pet relatives, whether or not they're wolves?

Faye did not send them to spread her ashes simply because she wanted her ashes so badly to be there. She sent them because both Kratos and Atreus needed to go through with it in order to grow together as father and son, overcome their grief about her in a healthy way, rid the world of Baldur, Magni and Modi (who Faye detested), make a friend and than enemy out if Frayer, learn their relationship with the giants, etc. It was supposed to be a struggle, because all things worth doing are. Your criticisms of the story don't make any sense.

The side quests are not meaningless because they have significance as well and they build upon characters other than Kratos and Atreus, on top of that there are many hints as to what their relationship was like with Fay in between the gameplay I feel like she was just blowing past them because of her disdain to the combat which is amazing but again she probably skipped over the tutorials and a lot of people didn't bother to explain or their points never came across as helpful.

Video games make John Wick killing everyone over his dog seem reasonable.

I don't think that there's any shame in changing opinions over time; and the journey tells it's own story. Then again, the way YT likes to recommends things it's not necessarily a story that would be told chronologically. That might be a bit confusing but I think people's media literacy theses days is good enough that most will take it in stride. If they don't... well strong emotions move people to action. If someone is upset with your earlier views or opinions you have the silver lining that it could count towards engagement, and who knows maybe a subscriber after a few more videos. Kratos is a god with a lot of time on his hands and a lot of power to do anything he wants. The story is very simple but the point is the relationship. The god of war series are homages to the sources they came from. The older GoW told a new story but used thematic elements and tone of Greek myth, inserting itself between familiar stories and bending them just a bit. She was powerful and she chose to die for a reason. By the time you get to the game you can tell that not only to she foresee most of it, she pushed for specific things to happen so it would firmly cement what was going to happen. The bigger question is, how far into the future did she see? I think that this new GoW trilogy is going to answer questions about her in pieces and we will feel her influence in all three. Just my guess though. I have yet to play Ragnorak.

The small conversations in the boat and etc. Made the game feel less empty, most games eith giant open world maps usually feel boring when going from point A to point B because it's just your character quietly going a long distance. I think Hannah doesn't have a big gamer base to see how entertaining these short dialogues between characters actually are, but I understand that those can be a bit "boring" to some people. Although it is a fun way to have characters interact and give more growth in between missions, gameplay and cutscenes without having to use 30+ hours of cutscenes for the characters to interact 7:20

I think the plot appearing to be weak is just one of the things about video game writing. The Witcher 3's entire plot is just "I'm looking for Ciri, following her trail." The plot has to be simplistic to make the main aspect of gaming- the game play, shine. But I also disagree, I think the point is meeting Kratos at the same point he was at the beginning of the first game. Part of his family is gone, and we see how different it is this time. Even if you're unfamiliar with the original games, I think that meeting characters in mourning is always an interesting thing. It's a very human experience and seeing how they deal and change with it is interesting.

It's also a story about Kratos learning to be a good god. And about Boy growing up. Fey's death is the catalyst. Without it, there is no story. Or at least not a story that hasn't already been told a thousand times and isn't mid as hell. It wouldn't be a bad story but it wouldn't be as good as it is now.

Hi there Hanna, as an old gamer (more than 30) this is my opinion on why this once there were any need of more context... You are missing the first games where the hole plot revolved on the revenge of his dead wife so its no wonder why he is willing to accomplish her 2nd wife's last will. In this context the wife's character is not as relevant as his attempt to keep a familie's life away from war; in this scenario Baldur is just a way of his past to reach him even though he is not a warrior any more. Also the final revelation of the game is as surprising as it gets, because he as the God slayer is expected to get away undeafeated even from these new Gods; so the questions is not if he is going to succed but how will he do it after his prime has come to an end... The revelation of him not being the main character in the story (Atreus instead) is the amazing fact; since from that point on, he is vulnerable and doomed to an end in a long story that for gamers is larger than the character inself... Regards

If you want something more story-forward I think you'll appreciate Ragnarok much more -- the 2018 game to me feels like more of a mood piece/character study, it's structured like an old folk tale. Thin and simple premise of "we have to take thing to place" as a framework to hang the character stuff on. That's why the more plotty stuff with Baldr and Freya was a little clunky imo.

I think Faye's death was what brought them together. Kratos was past the epic quests and slaying legendary monsters part of his life and the only way to get him from just ensuring his sons survival to having a genuine loving bond between them and engage with the world again was for her death to drive them together the 'main story' to me wasn't about fighting the Aesir or even getting the ashes to Jotünheim it was their journey to heal themselves and stand together as true father and son with the world as their oyster. Edit: Also despite how you may feel about GOW I hope to see you play the next one it was everything the 1st was and more, but don't just take my word for it. There are so many beautiful and nuanced parallels the game shows Kratos, Atrues, and the audience in Brok, Sindri, Freya, and Baldur. I'll agree with you in that it would've been nice to see some flashbacks on how the mom was to be able to like her more and mourn her character. But the story is about Kratos and Atreus, father and son growing together and learning from each other. Also, in my opinion it would've been a bad idea to have the mom alive because: 1. Why would Kratos risk his life and his son's just because the mom asked them to do something for her 2. If she was kidnapped, then I think Kratos would most likely go alone to her rescue, again, trying to not get his son in danger 3. Her being dead and having her last wish be the thing that motivates our protagonists is the perfect plot device, since Kratos would obviously want to fulfill her dying wish, and he would also want to have Atreus tag along since, you know its his mom's dying wish, and leaving Atreus out of it would be a huge d*ck move, kinda like leaving him out of his mom's funneral. So yeah, dead mom was the only way for the main plot to make sense but it would've been nice to have some flashbacks to see her relationship with both Kratos and Atreus.

I mean yeah, you've watched a summary of the first Saga, so you know the gist of it, but it still can't replace an actual journey through it. The 2018 game being a "reboot" is kind of a misnomer because it's very much a sequel game especially in terms of Kratos' own character development. It is very much "God of War 4", no matter how they try to market it as a soft reboot.

I still hope that you give narrative games a chance one day to see what you think. If you don't like making choices, I recommend something like What Remain of Edith Finch. • @archeryguy1701

I loved both games so much. The story for GoW 2018 is a little weird just because the ultimate end goal of what they're doing kinda doesn't matter for the story they're trying to tell. Spreading mom's ashes is what gets them out the door in the beginning and it's where they ultimately end up, but it's almost more background noise to the story of Kratos and Atreus coming to terms with who and what they are and their personal journey's. Ragnarok was excellent and I'm honestly thinking about playing it again soon (there's too much out right now!). 2018's pacing was definitely a bit tighter where Ragnarok feels a little fat sometimes, but its story was really good and enjoyable. You might like Ragnarok's story a bit more as what they go through and end up doing throughout their journey is far more closely related to their end goal than it was in 2018. And I liked a lot of the tweaks and improvements they made to the combat.

I think your idea of the story needing to be about Kratos and the boy finding mom is very similar to Princess in a castle trope. Its a version of the Damsell in distress trope where a female character is put into immediate danger in order to put the cast in motion. In the Princess in a castle trope trope the hero has to rescue the princess (who is usually a romantic interest) from somewhere she is being held by fending of the evil forces keeping her hostage. Think sleeping beaty. Video game series like Mario and Legend of Zelda are largely built around this trope. The trope has gotten criticsm for making women objects to be used as rewards for men. Not saying you can't never use this plot device I am just adressing some theories on the matter. It just seems making another character the motivation of your main cast in the plot has always some problemtaic elements. A lot of people were upset about the golf club scene in LOU II and compared it to fridging. I think wheter intentionally or not the solution used in God of War was use the dead parent motive for the quest. This removes the need to harm or make the character an object to be fought over by making the character a non exsistant in the story Needless to say a lot of this is just my opinions about a game which story I did not care much one way or the other. Also as a disclaimer I am not trying to accuse you of any sexist notions just musing some half baked thoughts about politics of games. PS: I think you have only 5 Valkyrie left if I am not mistaken. You defeated two during the main story and 1 after. If there is 8 in total then that would mean there is only 5 left.

I think the mom and ashes thing was just a poorly written reason to get you out and doing the fights. And I also feel like you're trying to understand the game's story as the center of it and the point, but I think you just need to remember how you're supposed to be interacting with this medium. What makes God of War is the actual gameplay. If they made this game a shooter and gave it a story mode with the same characters and plot it wouldn't be God od War anymore. The plot was weak, I'm not defending that, but I just think it's a lot easier to forgive when realistically the plot is just a series of excuses to force Kratos into the gameplay. Also, slightly unrelated, but even ignoring the weak motive, a lot of the story just shallow reasons to have Kratos explore Norse mythology. The earlier games did the same thing with Greek mythology. Sorry for the paragraph, but I just wanted to say this because the way you were reacting to GF Reviews made it sound like the entire game was just ok because the weak plot, and just ignoring what actually makes this a great game. Oh and about the parry vulnerability stuff you mentioned, that's just so that you can't just freely mistime the button since it is a really powerful move when used correctly and does make fights many times easier. It's just so you have to actually time it instead of spam. Just balancing really.

I mean, I understand that the mom's final request sounds like a tall order but you gotta remember who she's asking to do it. As the player, you don't have to know her or care about her, you just need to know that both Atreus and Kratos loved her enough to honour it. You get to somewhat know her through their eyes, not a lot but enough to know she matters to them a lot. Besides, her death wasn't just the trigger for their journey, she had actively prophesized their journey and knew the outcome which was most likely the reason for her request. Either way, she does show up in "god of war ragnarok" so you could always check that game out. Fair warning though...after a certain point the plot starts to feel rushed and the ending or final confrontation was pretty lacklustre to me so I'd say, don't expect too much... It was still a fun game and lore expansion but kind of a letdown at the climax. It did get a free dlc though which takes cratos through a sort of catharsis arc through valhala, that was interesting.

Something you should be aware about is that a games story isn’t the same as a book or a film. If it was I’d probably never play a video game again

Seems like you may appreciate Ragnarok's story more because, well, there's an actual story. Unlike the first game, all the side missions add to the story... Then again you might not😅

The point of this game was that revenge drew Kratos to ruin in the original games. He is trying to teach his son that while they should do what they feel is right, revenge is a pain that never ends.

I disagree. I think it was more about kratos learning how to be a good father. If he actually wanted to pass on information, he wouldn't have hidden so much. I think him getting over his need to hide was part of his journey to being a father.

Kratos being on another Revenge quest would completely undermind his growth from the original games. Showing his wife alive would take away from some of the subtle "blink and you'll miss it" moments where so much story and relationships and the past are conveyed, ie, taking away from some of the character development between Kratos and "Boy". The meat of the game isn't the story, not every story is written that way, the meat of this story is the dichotomy between the characters, the journey is the side, and the goal of making it to the mountain is only really relevant at three places, the beginning fit the set up, the middle when we realize we need to go to land of the giants and the end, where one final reveal happens. I totally disagree with Hannah's view on the story.

Wait till you play Ragnarok will all make sense! its the plot is not as deep yes but the process of morning a loved one and the Kratos feeling helpless knowing he has to raise his son alone is the big driving thing here, I can go all day. I love how the game address toxic masculinity and how Kratos has grown beyond just killing for no reason. 😅Also I have been away for a while, I need to catch up to your content. Keep playing and recording these I want to see your story arc !!! ✊✊🖤

SO it's hard to say why Mom being dead is important since that's covered in Ragnorak but really it's got a lot to do with her forcing Kratos to take the journey because if they don't do it, when they do it, Kratos and Atreus won't be ready to face the the end of the Cycle (Vikings held time as linear within ages but ages as cycles). If she was alive then aren't you just Fridging her? Also I hate the thing in stories of a living person refusing to warn people of danger then leaving, also without warning, and then acting like they did what was best. Fey is trapped because she knows when she dies ahead of time and can't do anything other than put them on this path. Also Dad of Boy is really about parents and children and how we relive the mistakes of our parents if we don't do anything to prevent it. The whole game Kratos is putting Atreus on the path to eventually become him, a dude who revenge murdered the greek pantheon and did untold damage to Greece or the Mediterranean or the world in general because... Look at all of Greek Mythology.
