Surtr never intended to run from his role in Ragnarok, just like Mimir said. The problem was he couldn’t risk his wife, yet he saw an opportunity when he saw the Blades of Chaos. He really was Surtr the Brave.

Surtr turning into a fireball is a bloody clever design. He walks at a very low speed, in every other game he would be that NPC that doesn't match player's movement speed and it's really annoying. But if you just make him run it would also be out of character. So it just turns to a fireball and now moves at running speed. Really brilliant

I love this version of Surtur because he is most human. Most versions of him depict him as a demonic being, but here, he is literally humanoid, having fallen in love with his polar opposite and choosing to keep separate from her just to let her live on while he sacrifices himself. It’s amazing what this series can do to bring incarnation of legendary characters into a new light we didn’t think was possible.

Well said. In all fairness, Surtr's description beyond being a fire giant/jotnar who wields a blade of fire and burns down all of creation in Norse Mythos isn't a whole lot to work with. That, and apparently Sinmara too who I think is like Surtr's lover like here but is Mimir's wife in the actual myths (at least some versions of it, lol). I really wish he appeared more given the role he plays per the Jotnar's murals and prediction, but with what we got it shows that while he wouldn't mind going through with it, it's his love for someone, Sinmara, that makes him hesitant since it''d get them both killed when he'd want to spare her from that. As Surtr put it, he doesn't want to put her in danger the same way Kratos (for all of 2018 and most of Ragnarok) didn't want to put Atreus into serious grave danger. It's honestly a lot more refreshing to have this version come into play compared to other depictions that adopt him like Marvel and Assassin's Creed.

The symbolism of the heart…Surtr is someone who’s literal purpose for life in any extent is to bring Ragnarok. He is the epitome of chaos and destruction in this game, and by all accounts had the attitude to match. But with Sinmaras heart we see this cool, yet still grumpy fellow. Someone who’s still boiling over inside but is able to maintain, control and even utilize the chaos with the power of his lovers heart. Another example of the power of loves ability to heal, and grow individuals who experience it, for better, and for worse. He even makes it clear to Atreus, “Have you ever been in love? It’s pretty good.”

I feel like so many people miss this detail... Surtr we meet VS the Surtr known from mythos and even the stories in game, he's a total asshole, but that's not who we meet. We meet a sensible person, he's calm, collected, but still passionate. He doesn't just have Sinmara's heart, he has her emotions, cooling and calming he's arrogance and wrath down. He's not even on fire when you meet him, he's just a husk, and after he gives what's left of his fire to Kratos' blades, his whole torso is covered in ice, and for a brief moment when Kratos puts those blades in his chest, you can see the loud, destructive fire he represents.

There's a prompt I've been looking all over for but I can't find. There's a part where I think Atreus asks Surtr about his sword? Not completely sure, I saw it in some gameplay but it was quickly cut off. I believe to get the prompt, you need to not move as soon as Surtr tells you to follow him into the Spark of the World but just stay still for a while. Would love to see it as I don't have a PlayStation to find this scene myself

Surtur killing Freyr lines up with the original myths, Freyr owned Summerbrandr, a magical sword that could slice and dice like no other, but he traded it for a chance to find his true love, Surtur then found Summerbrandr and used it to free Fenrir Wolf at Ragnarok, and in the epic final battle, he kills Freyr with it

@@ComradeDrake Regardless my point stands. Mimir atleast sounds like he’s from the region a lot these myths originated instead of having an American accent and on top of that his vernacular is very poetic and flowery- how you would imagine an intelligent man from that time would talk. Even Kratos has a distinct accent. Imagine playing Assassins Creed in ancient Italy and everyone just sounds and acts like Americans from today. I know everyone and their mom loves this game, but this is a genuine issue.
