despite the fact i'm a raging atheist, this song hit me deep in my cold black heart. Esmeralda perfectly expresses her pure, honest wish for the betterment of her people, even if she herself receives nothing. She isn't even all that sure of Christianity herself, yet still she grasps at whatever hope she can find. i'm… i'm just gonna cry for a bit, alright?

I agree. My family and I are Nontheists (meaning we have no religion but aren't against people who do.) But when I listened to this beautiful song....it really showed me what the belief of God should be about; Hoping the best for others rather than yourself.

SHUT UP HEATHER!

This song is the purest song Disney has ever written. And your voice singing it makes it purer. Consider Esmeralda. She was in a HORRIBLE mess at this point, functionally imprisoned in the cathedral with Frollo and the town guards out for her life, through absolutely no fault of her own. If ever there was a time to pray for help, this was it. She's also surrounded by people praying for selfish reasons and unaware of how good they actually have it. Instead she's asking God to help people who have it worse than her, because she'll be okay. So pure.

Your voice fits Esmeralda so well, I can honestly see you as her if this show were on Broadway (if it is, I'm sorry for my ignorance I'm not much of a theater person. XD) Lovely job, Anna!

The Opening line is what gets me in this song. Esmeralda speaks to the Virgin Mary as if she can relate to her on some level looking past the Sainthood. While in truth I can imagine Mary would have been outcast when it was found out she was pregnant before consummating her marriage with Joseph, no one but her husband believed her and stood by her while she was outcast from her village. So the idea of excluding people never sat with me when it comes to organized religion. So i have no doubt Mary has more in common with Esmeralda's people then those who worshiped her.

My favorite part about the movie is that when Esmerelda was like 'God, I don't really give a shit about myself, but can you go help my people?' and God was like '*Yes child.*'

If they do, I hope they fix the tonal issues caused by the gargoyles. They have the potential to create an incredible, and genuinely compelling story through the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and part of that is making sure the tone is more consistent. Yes it's a darker film without the more comedic elements but honestly that just makes the emotions gut punch thag much harder. Tldr I agree ^^

Whenever I hear this song, all I can encision is the god/angel's pov. In between so many selfish prayers only for their own greed, here is one woman, who is rejected,who has been hurt, who more than any of them has a right to be selfish. Yet, all she asks for is for the betterment of her people, who are suffering.

Fluffy "God would bow to you with that kinda voice." Sorry, but what an arrogant thing to say. GOD, The Creator, would NEVER bow down to a human being, a creation. And while the singer in the video has a very nice singing voice, I wouldn't exactly call her voice the most beautiful or the most impressive or the most perfect. She would need literally lots and lots and years and years and YEARS of dedicated practice and training and experience if she, the singer in the video, desires to attain vocal perfection, which is not an easy thing to do. Her voice IS beautiful, but it is not perfect, so I'm sorry, GOD would never "bow down to that kinda voice."

I adore this song. One of hope and prayer that pleas for only fairness and help in time of great need. One that looks out for thy neighbor and has the courage to dream of better experiences on the horizon. One that is nothing more than a heartfelt wish of comfort for those who know only suffering. And yet, this is also a song of great tragedy. One that hears the pleas and yet allows them to falls on deaf ears. One where after a humble request for love, they are only met with worse fates. Left with nothing but their hope that leads nowhere. Truly this song is the perfect portrayal of innocent wishes in a world too cruel to practice what they preach. A more proper representation of god has yet to be seen. A perfect song masquerading as one of hope, but only shows that much more of how hopeless our world is. Beautiful.
