These things absolutely fascinate me. Can anyone tell me more about their mechanics? Do they operate like regular volcanoes, but with mud instead of magma? Or do they work in a different way? I'd love to know!

Hi Carolyn! "Normal" volcanos work with hot magma, those mud volcanos work with cold gases. So if that natural gas emanates in places where it's muddy, it "burps" and the mud forms little crater lakes. A bit further down of that place is a little lake and the whole lake has bubbles in the water all the time. Like a bubble spa, just a bit smelly :-) It's the same natural gas they exploit a few kilometers further and then fill in bottles. So it burns and if you light it, the flame will extinguish itself with the next mud-burb. It's very funny to play around there :-)

@@SilkeBig- thank you very muck for the explanation- I guess then that the gases coming up are a mixture of methane and sulfur gases, methane for the burning, sulfur ones for the smell. Mud volcanoes appear all over the place, and some have links to volcanoes, but most do not. I didn't know if the mud was hot or cold, whether it was acidic, alkaline or neutral. I guess each place that has them is different from the others. I know some are used for spa treatments, too: the mud has got to be cool or slightly warm if people are happy to wallow in them.

@@carolynallisee2463 Those have cold mud and are related to fossil Energy Depots. Azerbaijan exploits a lot of oil and natural gas. It's not used for anything, no spas etc., they just amuse those who know where tehy are :-)

Someone likely threw a piece of lava rock here and it has begun to sprout.

SilkeN: Low amounts of water, the chemical composition makes mud, the breakdown of the rocks and land turn into a 'mud' ...these processes are building and wasting of the earth's rock cycle. And so fascinating
