    Just so everyone understands this: he killed wizard boy’s older sister. THAT is why he’s sick to his stomach. Yes, I understand the context as an outsider that it was a mercy kill and she was going to die regardless. That does not matter to GS. He killed someone’s older sister, by his own hand. As someone who had to watch his own sister violently die, obviously that hits home for him. That’s what makes his line so potent: “did you think you actually accomplished anything?”. It’s basically the same issue characters like Spider-Man deal with a lot. They don’t remember or even acknowledge the ones they saved, all they can think about is the ones they couldn’t.

    Everyone here is talking about GS acting like this because of trauma or him feeling like he is becoming a goblin which is the very thing he is supposed to kill. This is all correct but I think some people are also forgetting how GS has changed since season 1. Back then, GS focused purely on killing goblins regardless of the method. He didn’t pay any attention to the feelings of others or how he appeared. All he cared about was killing goblins. This is also why when the Wizard Girl begged him to kill her, he did so without hesitation. He was only seeing things logically. There was no way to save her and she just wanted the pain to stop so he put the Wizard Girl out of her misery. It’s only through Priest Girl is when GS began to open up and think about others. He began using reckless methods less often so he doesn’t put others in danger. Upon hearing Wizard Boy talking about losing his sister, GS started to reflect on what he did. Yes, there was no way to save Wizard Girl and trying to get her out would only prolong her agony. GS knew this, however to him, this is not an excuse. He killed someone’s sister. Becoming more open and remembering how his older sister was brutally killed by goblins was overwhelming for him.

  • @kagato23

    @kagato23

    6 ай бұрын

    I actually think it would have been worse before. Assuming he never met Priestess and assuming he’s still alive, wizard boy shows up wanting to kill goblins. Goblin Slayer is going to still pay attention to that and end up inevitably getting this info drop. But he doesn’t break down. Instead without a word he sets off to do the next quest immediately, no rest. And the next and the next, using his faster but more dangerous methods, and probably ends up dead. Or worse, crippled, unable to continue. He doesn’t kill himself, at his most disconnect d he still knows Cowgirl would be hurt even more than if the goblins got him so he won’t seriously consider that. But he goes nearly catatonic wrapped up in his own mind and the stress kills him in half a decade tops.

    Really don't think this is about the mercy kill like people seem to keep repeating. This whole obsession of his started with his sister being raped and murdered by goblins. So he gets obsessed with killing them, learns how to pretty much wipe out their nests, even starts enjoying it. But then here's this wizard kid, who's sister is someone he couldn't save from goblins. I think it just really hit him that for all the gobs he's killed, for all the nests he's exterminated, nothing has actually changed. There's seemingly an endless supply of the horrid little fuckers raping and murdering to their little black hearts' content, and there's still people out there losing loved ones in the most horrible way just like it happened to him.

    Goblin Slayer has to be one of the most realistic portrayals of survivors guilt and PTSD I have ever seen anywhere. He even has the blunted affect common with PTSD. Goblin slayer isn't stoic he is just so damned traumatized that he can't express emotions anywhere near normally because they are so repressed. Goblin slayer has spent the better part of half a decade at that point seeing the most vile fucked up stuff the mind of a goblin can come up with. Killing goblins daily for years on end with little to no breaks. He has saved probably hundreds of people. He has saved so many he is basically a folk hero for the people on the frontier. Called the frontiers kindest because he never turns down a quest to slay goblins no matter how small the reward. But there is also no telling how many people he wasn't able to save which I bet was much more than the ones he could save. When he mercy killed the wizard girl he showed no hesitation. How many times must he had done the same thing to others that he was to late to save to get to the point he didn't hesitate? We will never know. All of which probably weigh on him even if he doesn't show it. Goblin slayer also knows how messed up he is. Which is why he doesn't pursue romance even though he definitely knows at least that Cowgirl has feelings for him. Because on the inside he knows he is a broken shell of a man whose whole goal in life is to make the goblins pay for what they have done, and to save others from the pain he lives with. He knows that even if he were to try to return her feelings he wouldn't be able to give her the relationship she deserves. Let alone if they were to ever have children.

Why is he so upset? because he felt like he was doing something. that he was acomplishing his goal. his goal isn't, technically, to Slay all the goblins. that is how he is "planning" to reach his goal: he never wants anyone else to ever be him. he wants a world where no young boy loses his older sister to goblins. he has been working hard, slaying goblins, and actually doing enough of a job at it that he is getting famous. he is generally happy(er) than he has been sense his sister died, things have been going well. but this situation wakes him up, makes him Realize that he isn't going to be able to do what he wants, reach his goal, just slaying goblins by himself. it hits him hard. because he wasn't powerful enough, fast enough. because instead of teaching young adventurers the dangers and how to kill goblins and just killing them himself, that older sister died, and created another version of himself. which is why he goes out of his way to try to raise more people to slay goblins, to teach the young ones to avoid the pitfalls that claim(ed) so many lives going after "pitiful" goblins before, including the kid's older sister.

Its like failing his own sister all over again, and those feelings bubble to the surface.

    Honestly, this was my favorite scene from season 2. It shows character development. We see Goblin Slayer is not the same "stone cold killer" he was presented as in the beginning of season 1. Not only do we see the regret he feels for taking someone's life(I don't he ever could've foresaw one day meeting her sibling), but now he begins to question whether what he's doing is worth it or not. We see in a later episode that Goblin Slayer's original dream was to become a legendary dragon slayer, but his world was ruined when he saw her sister raped and killed by goblins. He was puny at the time, and there was nothing he could do. Goblin Slayer hated the goblins so much, he decided to dedicate his life to the extermination of goblins. Even if it cost him some of his humanity, it didn't matter because of his pure unbridled hatred and disdain for these monsters who not only show no remorse for all the lives they've ruined, but don't seem to have any reason for doing it, or any good one at least. Goblin Slayer seemed to be doing pretty well for himself, and didn't care what the people at guild the thought of him. And with his party, he could no slay what he hated most more efficiently. But this scene with Wizard Boy made Goblin Slayer have more awareness of what he was doing, and also made him wonder if this whole goblin killing spree he's dedicated his life had even impacted the world for the better, as expressed by his line, "Did you think you've done something? That you've accomplished anything?". No matter how many goblins' lives he takes, more people will continue to be raped and killed. While his intentions and efforts are valiant on paper, it never seems to be enough. His best is never enough. Are all these efforts in vain? That what he questions. Tl;dr this scene shows goblin slayer is human, and is far is not a one-dimensional killer who's only personality is his hatred for goblins. Him questioning if his goblin slaying efforts are in vain is also worth noting.

    I don't think it's specifically because he performed the mercy-killing of the sister that he's disturbed: it's more that despite all his efforts and achievements he couldn't prevent someone to suffer the same fate as Goblin Slayer does. He sees himself in the mage-novice.

Waiting for English dub, bc in my opinion Brad Hawkins is a better GoblinSlayer then Yuichiro.) If I remember correctly in the book he didn’t just cry in the alley, he had a full out rage moment. In anime: lightly brushes spearman off and cries in alley In book: full on shoves spearman out of his way. And rages in alley until he vomits

He has done a lot of good and saved countless lives, but in the end, he has to accept this is a problem no one man can possibly fix. It's a bit like someone wanting to solve crime or poverty. It’s not really about that to him. It really was the only good decision to make and he knew/knows that. But in this moment where a younger brother laments about the death of his older sister to what he thought were goblins, it makes GS have a breakdown. As someone who had seen his own older sister violently killed by goblins he felt that he was no different. He’s already compared himself to goblins before, saying that he’s “a goblin to the goblins”. In that moment he likely feels he became the very thing he swore to kill endlessly, whether or not it’s a deserved mindset he didn’t see himself as a savior/slayer, but killer no different than the goblins

  • @coldeed

    That is legitimately what is happening happening in the story. I don't know if you haven't realized this but Goblin Slayer uses obsessing over goblins to ignore the kind of shit that bothers him that happened in his childhood. Because so much of the wizards stuff lines up with Goblin Slayer his own past it becomes incredibly hard for him to ignore and repress his own unresolved issues. But he is literally doing what you said he should be doing. The part of it that makes it more complicated is the wizard guy doesn't want to take Goblin Slayers advice.

    reminds me of what happened to my old neighbor before we move out from the place, the neighbor is a sweet couple with kind hearted children, the husband worked as a soldier, a front liner even, so he doesn't get home often, kind of like meeting 2-3 years once, so then when I was 10 y.o, I saw him going back home, looks like he was transferred to as an officer, not the front liner again, he's still a sweet loving guy as ever but somehow his aura is dark that even the child me back then noticed, one time there was a new year festive, there was a huge fireworks on the sky at the night, our house doing some celebrating with them until that sir is sweating like crazy, he ran thru the toilet and puke as we heard he scream a bit, that was my fault for lighting the firework, I felt guilty more after we heard the story of how he actually killed few of the enemies since if he didn't killed, he'll be killed what am I trying to say is the GS is somehow similar to my old neighbor back then, he felt remorse for the killing, it somehow his duty for killing but as a human, his feeling is devastated as for seeing another one is killed, this GS actually did a mercy kill but it doesn't change the fact that he killed one's family and he felt bad on it :(
