Goalie goals were forever changed when this weirdo flew too close to the sun

Спорт

For a while, there was no rule in the NHL that prohibited a goaltender's ability to race down the ice and try to score a goal for himself. And then Gary Smith happened. He could have been immortalized for his goalscoring prowess, but instead, he got completely rocked and the NHL stepped in to make sure no one tried his antics again. He still rules though.

    Incidentally, if you've ever played any of the NHL video games as a goalie and wondered why you get 7 penalty minutes for a goalie fight instead of 5, this rule is why: one or both goalies have to cross centre ice in order to fight the other.

    I like your alternate universe where everyone is a goal-scoring goalie. Something so normalized and intrinsic to the sport of hockey that we would have seen a video called: "Weird Rules: Goalies were not allowed to score until this weirdo did something awesome"...And then at the end of that video we would all imagine a boring world where hockey goalies are restricted to their nets.

    One of the wackiest things about this too is that despite Gary sounding like a hot piece of garbage in net, he actually co-won the Vezina (award for top goaltender) in 1971-72, so he wasn't nearly as much of a complete diaper fire as he probably sounds like. I could _almost_ argue against this rule. If your Goalie wants to leave the goal unattended and try to assist or score, that's a calculated risk. "Sports rule books don't just come into existence." Reminds me of a recorded interview that Dr. James Naismith did about inventing the game of basketball. The first time that they played the game there were no rules other than the object of the game was for one team to put the ball in the basket and the other team had to stop them. Then switch offense and defense and the team with the most points wins. In the interview Naismith said that after about 90 seconds there were several black eyes, a lot of cuts and a separated shoulder as guys were tackling and brawling each other for the ball. He then wrote the original 13 rules of basketball and over time it grew from there.

Players like Ederson and Allison are key to this and have gotten assists. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the history of the NHL is so littered with strange, stupid and funny stories like this (as an example, the league was *literally founded* in a scene akin to the No Homers Club from _The Simpsons:_ one team owner in the old NHA, Toronto's Eddie Livingstone, was so hated by everyone else in the league that they formed a new league, the NHL, to get away from him) that y'all really should make more videos about it; more than a handful a year, if I can be frank. Having said that though, there's an amusing entry from the annual _NHL Official Guide & Record Book's_ history of major rule changes that I wanted to share, about a closed loophole that somehow _nobody_ attempted to exploit (emphasis mine): _"1931-32: _*_Though there is no record of a team attempting to play two goaltenders on the ice,_*_ a rule was instituted which stated that each team was allowed only one goaltender on the ice at the time."_

    @@roshango125ab if anything, I'd say that's a reason to allow it, but insist that teams have to have a keeper in keepers kit. It means 90% of the time there's no difference to not having the rule, and that remaining 10% is made up of crazy win or lose desperation plays. Keepers almost never score from corners in soccer, but it's always exciting when a team tries because you know they're throwing everything at it

    This reminds me of school when I was playing soccer with a bunch of my friends in the school league. My team was very bad and I chose them so I (a fairly decent goalie) would get more practice due to them defending rather badly. Our only goal happened when I made a save, dropped the ball, sprinted down the side line (50m), knocked it to the centre and had one of my team mates stumble it with his knee into the goal.

    I play goalie and punt the puck regularly, it's usually a weak shot on goal so the other team can change, rather than drop it and pass it up to pressure the changing team you just drop it and line drive punt it to space I'll also occasionally punt to clear rather than cover if the other team is controlling play but doesn't have any net front or slot presence for reference, I play a lot of different leagues/tournaments this happens more in any given rec league (even the competitive ones) than in tournaments or when I played in college (those players tend to be less lazy about crashing the net religiously)

    Ah yes, back when NHL goalies were insane. I think it was because there was only 6 teams forever, which meant there were only 6 job openings for the position teams were LEAST forgiving of when it came to failure. That's a LOT of pressure to perform once you got a starting spot, because if you screw that up your career is done, no second chances. You could get bumped up or down the lines as a defender or a forward based on your performance, but as a goalie, you were only semi-pro once you became the backup, only good for practice and last resort while you worked construction in the summer to get by. Three years of starting with that kind of pressure as you attempt to establish yourself as a generational talent JUST TO BE WORTH KEEPING LONG TERM is enough to make anyone go crazy. Oh, and they used to play without head protection, so they were probably all brain damaged anyways.

  • @brandonm949

    @brandonm949

    In this case, it was a really bad call that favored Oregon, and the refs were Pac-10 refs so it seemed shady. They said Oregon recovered a late onside kick, even though the replay showed an Oklahoma player recovering it. And an Oregon player had touched the ball before it went 10 yards, meaning Oklahoma should have gotten possession anyway. There was also a pass interference penalty after that, which Oklahoma argues shouldn't have been called because the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage. There's no mention of whether or not that's true, so that call might have been correct. Both calls were reviewed by replay officials, who decided not to overturn either one. Oregon ended up scoring the game-winning touchdown on that drive. The Pac-10 ended up apologizing to Oklahoma, and suspended the whole officiating crew for 1 game.

    On the contrary, many football... soccer goalkeepers had managed to score but obviously due to the size of the pitch, they usually only sneak out during setpieces, which is why most soccer goalkeepers scored from headers.

    To be honest, I’m kind of glad this rule exists, because if it didn’t, you’d effectively eliminate any reason to have an extra attacker at the end of a game. The goalie could just do it himself and then get back in the crease when it goes the other way.

    Now i cant help but imagine a team with 6 players/goalues on the ice all the time. Outfitted with bigger padding, but not so much as to hamper movement. Whkever is closest to net is tending it; could even put 2-3 guys in there if needed. Special sticks for dedense thats more like a goalie stick. Maybe one guy with light gear to be the scorer. There is a lot of possibility; boils down to : Could you legally play with 6 guy, no goalies ?
