GO UP: An SB19 Docuseries || Episode 1 - PPOP Beginnings (PILOT)

Thank you for watching. This is a fan-made project and is an attempt to introduce a world audience to OPM, PPOP, and SB19. In the series, we will focus on telling these stories through no narration and only use clips available from real people in the media and local music scene. We want you to learn and interpret for yourself the amazing talent of SB19 and the movement being made for PPOP and OPM music right now. This first episode explores a brief history of the music industry, and how PPOP came to be. We believe this is the best way for people to truly appreciate what SB19 and other artists have gone through to get to where they are today. Also, we purposely used SB19 music (Go Up) in this so it got claimed by KZread and ad revenue will go to them.
This is a pilot episode of what we see as an 8-part+ series. As this is a free project, please leave your comments below on whether or not you would like to see us continue, and feel free to email us at gidkiddad@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering to help with the project.
Mabuhay!

This is why I hate it the most whenever I see comments from fellow ignorant Filipinos saying PPop is a copy of KPop. How could that be? when we were first to embrace Pop music among all other Asian countries. Pop music existed in PH when Japan and Korea were still suffering from war and economic turmoil. K-pop was only popularized back in the late 80s and the 80s was already the Philippines' Golden Age of Music. So tell me who copied who? The fact is Filipinos have all the elements to dominate in the music industry globally, Talent, Skills, and determination. All it needs is support starting from Filipinos themselves (drop crab mentality) and for the government to step in and support this.

I got emotional on the part when OPM legends were being shown and sharing their thoughts and dreams about OPM. They have been working so hard and putting all of their heart and soul to make OPM fly, but its really hard without the help of everyone here in our country. We need all the support of everyone of us to make it happen. I'm pretty sure some pinoy who will see this comment will say, we are using the "makabayan card" (loving our own country) again. But no! If Filipinos will just try to brush off our colonial mentality, which is deeply engrained in us, we will see how beautiful and high quality our music industry is. It's just sad that because of that colonial mentality, some of our artists needed to be appreciated by foreigners first for them to be given attention by us Pinoys.

Looking forward for more episodes about SB19. I can relate to the sexbomb era and xlr8 era which was my childhood. and for sometime I stopped being a PPOP groups fan until SB19 came. When I was a teenager, Hotdog, Cinderella, Vst and Co. Haji, Basil, etc..they are popular and making music, both in English and Pilipino, enjoyed by all people in different walks of life , and called OPM. How come nowadays it seems that if the song isn't in Pilipino, or not a ballad it is not OPM?

I, too, only discovered the SB19 through this channel 3wks ago - got hooked (think it was a Tilaluha reaction?), was pleasantly surprised, drowned in their body of work incl back story, laughed at their antics, & now am a really big fan esp of Ken (the talent, the voice, plus those killer cheekbones & that jawline!!, turned me into a giggly, middle-aged fan who did not really appreciate pop music before!😂😂😂). So, huge thanks! Just a few points though, plus FYIs - 1) on "Anak" - it was released in 1978. It was a finalist in the 1st Metro Manila Pop Music Festival (1978), the biggest songwriting contest that produced the biggest songwriters & a lot of popular singers who lasted for about 2 decades). It was the earliest, conscious effort at promoting Filipino pop music, and it was also around this time that "OPM" was coined. 2) the 70s was a big, very rich era that produced a vast portfolio of music: -a) the earliest Fil pop music, the "Manila sound" which was very distinct, and became really popular w/ groups like Cinderella ("Pers Lab", etc) & the group Hotdog ("Manila", "Bongga Ka 'Day", etc.) being dominant. It was also this era that produced the earliest male pop music "Idols" like Rico Puno (who lasted abt 3 decadess & whose songs are still being sung in singing contests), then followed by Hajji Alejandro, the singer of "Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika" from that 1st MetroPop festival, a tune you would still hear frequently played, at least its intro, when talking about OPM up to now, it is an iconic song & very emblematic. 3) There was a thriving folk, folk/rock, pop-rock music genres that actually became very popular in the 70s , dominated by Mike Hanopol, Freddie Aguilar, Sampaguita, Asin, Pepe Smith, etc. 4) In the late 80s up to early 90s, the earliest rappers were Andrew E & Francis M, their songs became really popular, & entered the mainstream, unlike the rap music now which is still niche. There is so much more, but these are the parts which deserve to be highlighted. These may merit a look as you try to get an understanding as to how OPM/pop music developed.

PPop has been there way long before other East asian countries did. It's not just realized due to lack of appreciation and stereotypes of local listeners. If you're gonna think about it, mas malawak sana ang reach ng music natin at mas may edge tayo kesa sa ibang asian countries because we speak ENGLISH. But for some reasons, OPM was just having difficulties to penerate the international scene. Now, with the advent of social media, I hope the spotlight will be drawn to our own Ppop and OPM music. Let's all start appreciating our music. "To be international, we should be local". Stop crab mentality and colonial mentality.#ppoprise #sb19 #OPM

Thank you, GKD! Beautifully collated clips. My Filipino A’Tin heart is full. ❤ Nice to see some videos I missed since I became an A’Tin. OPM is indeed growing globally. You, as an example, has recognized the pool of local talent, which you invested in to market out. Hoping for the success of your business and can’t wait to see your own video clips with SB19 in the succeeding documentary series.

CKD labels, I can't believe that I'm your subscriber yet I missed this. I actually, saw this because D&J Reacts did their reaction to this docu. Thanks for putting this together and it's thorough. I might piggy back on this video for my upcoming episode of "The Mahalima Mana: Influence." Thanks in advance. 😀 I'm a Tita A'tin who is restless so I started "Tha Mahalima Mana." Influence would be the 8th episode already and I hope to do more to help tell the positive stories of #SB19.
