We had a WONDERFUL time at this event. Trains, trains and more trains AND we got to meet Danny! Everyone we encountered at Folkston was super nice. Seeing the many young folks and their interest of trains was so encouraging. Thanks Danny for all you do to educate us about railroading.

I can remember when the yard at Spring used to be a crew change point for all trains until they stopped doing it only for trains which ran out of time and had to tie down and wait for new crews (hence these days). Most of our crew changes around here are done along the Hardy Toll Road on the three track "Parking Lot"

Hello Danny, I’m a new subscriber. Awesome videos!! I live in UT but was born and raised in Lakeland, less than a mile from the old train station. I spent many years as a kid along the train yard, playing in the nearby woods and talking to the hobos that used to ride the trains. My grandfather retired from SCL when I was a kid; all of these vids bring back lots of good memories. Keep up the good work!

9:40 I had that happen yesterday when I was railfanning the north end of what used to be a railroad crossing at F St in Bakersfield CA right at the entrance to the BNSF Bakersfield yard, a freight train (I believe it was the eastbound BNSF H-MODBAR, high priority manifest from Modesto CA to Barstow CA) had been picking up and dropping off cars in the yard, thus blocking my view of inbound Amtrak San Joaquins 714, which was coming from Oakland CA to its final stop at the Bakersfield Amtrak station just about a mile to the east.

Seeing the shots of the Lakeland passenger platform hit me with a wave of nostalgia. It was there I first set foot in Lakeland in 1965 when I arrived by rail after a fantastic cross-country rail journey from Seattle through Twin Cities, Chicago, St Louis, NE Arkansas, Birmingham, Atlanta, and Jacksonville. The trip was a gift for my 16th birthday, in theory to compensate for yet another relocation for my father's job. My final years of high school were in front of me, then I was off to other states for college, a career, family, retirement, and advancing age. That aging platform, sad though it is, seems to be in better shape than I am. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Another great video Danny and EXCELLENT drone shots on the old ACL signals. Beautiful all around. Really sad to see them go and was hoping they could be saved. A true part of history going down in the books.

Both distant signal and approach medium is awesome including the videos Danny makes and the skill approach medium has that can make his trainz routes.

Seems like forever since your last video, as always, great job on this video and the information was excellent. Please keep the videos coming, the more the better. I hope to be in the Folkston and Callahan areas around the middle of May for a couple days on the way down to the beach this year.

Hello from the DelMarVa Peninsula! I just discovered your videos and could watch them all day! LOVE THE NARRATION! My Dad was with Southern 30+ years and retired in '84, two years after the merger with Norfolk and Western.

The freight coming out of the yard at 7:00 has two SD40-2's as power 645 engined 6 axle D.C. Motored 3000 horsepower each first built in 1972 and built up to the 710 engine replaced the 645. These locomives the dash 2's were a big improvement in locomotive construction in that the dash 2's introduced to the railroad replace electronics in the form of cards with a handle on them that if the electrician discovered a fault on one he could remove it replacing it with a repaired module and get the locomotive back to work quickly. Previously built EMD locomotives you had to remove by hand the bad relay/switch which meant removing lots of wires and then after replacing the failed relay rewired it. This generally took from half an hour to more than three hours depending on how difficult the relay/switch was to access. I was running a GP-8 rebuilt by Conrail that intermittently would load up and drop the load from the main generator and make switching very challenging. I grabbed an electrician one night and pleaded with him to check it out while I ran the engine as I could see electrical sparks coming from the low voltage cabinet. It took him less than 30 seconds to find the faults screw connector on a single wire that was loose on the wire, he replaced it with a new connector properly crimped and reattached it to the relay and the engine properly loaded and didn't drop the load until I closed the throttle. Another electrician had checked out the engine but without running the engine you can't always find the problem. My relief engineer was like oh great a pos engine. I informed him the problem had been found and taken care of. The next day as he was relieving me he said thank you, that engine works like it should always work. Sometimes it just takes a little cooperation to find and fix an electrical problem. Cheers!

Yeah I had a very busy Christmas season and it hasn't stopped since. I've shot some new video, but no chance to write or edit until this past weekend.

I think you would like this. Deliver freight in a van. Yesterday's pick up was at loram MOW equipment in Minneapolis Minnesota. They had a yard full of neat things but it was too dark to get a good picture. Today I'm meeting up with a train somewhere in Oshawa Ontario Canada to deliver. I'll try to get some pictures if it's someplace cool and they allow it

Aww Danny you would have loved this.... my drop-offs are usually at a dock but this time they instructed me to pull off the road and follow right down the right of way... To where a line of pretty old loram equipment was parked on a siding. Just as I was about to pull in I'm glad I heard the horns blowing...2 CN locos needed to cross the road and cut across the siding to switch into the GM Oshawa plant yard to pick up a line of autoracks. Got some video I'll share the link if I get it edited. I could hear you narriting the whole thing as it went down...lol

CSX does have a very robust signaling schema. Unlike NS.

I saw a CSX train up by Cleveland OH with 2 GE locos with 2 loaded intermodal containers. That was just about 3 weeks ago.

When the train is making a “Diverging” move, say from a siding onto the main line it is always going to be red over yellow in some places like on the BNSF it is easier to understand because the signal is simply “Diverging approach” but on CSX it’s a bit different. I’m not the best at signals. I hope that kind of answers your question. Max

Don't forget that red at the top. In reality, it's Red-over-Yellow-over-Red. But the Red at the bottom doesn't mean anything here, so he doesn't mention it. If you check the rules, you'll see that it is _Medium Approach_ whether that lower Red is present or not. So he doesn't even mention it. CSX Signal Rules: signals.jovet.net/rules/CSX%20Signal%20Rules.pdf (Page 1 applies at this location) The fun thing about signals is there are so many little details that matter. One of these is that lower Red. As I said, here it doesn't matter. But on other railroads (such as NORAC rules), that lower Red _must_ be there or it's a completely different signal indication. Check the "former Conrail" signal rules of the second page of that CSX Signal Rules document. See which signal rule is invoked if it's just Red-over-Yellow without that lower Red (in former Contrail territory)?

I like seeing the old style signal bridges and cantilevers, but with the implementation of PTC will make things safer. The new signals are actually easier to read but don't look as aesthetically pleasing as the old signal bridges and cantilevers do. From the 000 389. 9 KZread_guy out

Yes, you got that right. They closed Winston in June of 2016, then opened it back up about 9 months later. But now they appear to closing Mulberry yard. Lately it seems all the Bone Valley jobs originate and terminate at Winston.

A comment on the "doubling" moves. Just north of Wildwood this happens frequently. The last time I was there the train blocked the crossing for 20 minutes and people were very aggravated. Traffic was backed up onto Route 301 and pedestrians were jumping through the hoppers. I have watched different crews handle this situation in different ways. This time a van drove up to just south of the crossing and a crew member got out and instructed the engineer to stop just past the switch so the crossing was blocked. He then rode the train back to couple onto the rest of the train that was on the main. It took over 20 minutes to get the train going again and clear the crossing which was a very long wait. Prior to this, I have seen another procedure where the crewman rode the train up out the siding and crossed the road before stopping the train. That of course allowed people to cross over the crossing. After a few minutes and after the traffic had all cleared, they then backed the train across the crossing and coupled on. So they blocked the crossing for maybe 5 minutes and then maybe a second time of around 10 minutes. Now I know they can do things anyway that they want, but pulling up a little extra to allow people to cross between moves is a courtesy that I'm sure would be greatly appreciated by the public. Railroads should try to get as much positive PR as possible.

Yes, I get the frustration of the motorists. But there IS an overpass just a half mile to the south where drivers can easily go around the tracks. This is typical of railroad situations, especially in Florida. That road, County Rd 462 was used only by industries and farmers until 1990 ,when The Villages was born. Now that The Villages is the sole economic force in Sumpter county, residents demand everything must cater to them. The railroad has retreated about as much it can and still operate. If Villagers don't like those yard doublings on 462, they should petition their lawmakers to build an overpass there.

Distant Signal I guess we can thank the S Line expansion for the name change on that one too. Lol. I did look at it on Google and street view still shows it the way it used to be. Single main at the 462 crossing then the siding started a couple hundred feet South of the crossing. Now the double track extends quite far beyond Wildwood in both directions. Lol.

When did you shoot the video I was just wondering because I want to know if that old ACL signal is still standing I was going to go take a drive down there today to visit them before they go forever. Like you I love signals matter of fact I'm going to public works in 2 weeks to pick up a ped pole, ped bace, ped signal, ped call button and some here and there hard ware. Now to get rail road signals I had a chance to get some flashers but CSX is not too easy to work with. Public works gives me stuff for free from crashes , old stock they don't want or stuff that no longer is within the "standard" for Pinellas County. Thanks for sharing, it would be nice to meet you one day.

Another amazing video! I love quality of some of the close-ups. Also, nice drone shots of those ACL signal bridges in Lakeland. I'd like to know if it's safe to railfan 10th St. for an extended period or is it better only to stop there when you know a train is coming?

I think 10th street is probably safe, but I would be constantly on watch of my surroundings there. I spent a couple of hours there on the one of the days I shot this video and I've never had a problem. But caution is always the rule in any railfanning. (Except at Folkston, GA. Ha!)

Can you do train spotting at somewhere else other than the level crossings. Those infernal bells (ding ding... they drive me crazy)... and all that horn action is a pain in the you know what. I just want to hear the engines throbbing and the fast wheels on rails sound..

Distant Signal we don’t get pairs here in Fayetteville NC. Most thru here is wide cabs anymore. I always look for standard cabs on the point also.
