Go Power Plus Update

This is an update to the original go power plus video. If you haven't seen that one check it out. In this one I address some of the comments from the comments section. I also show how it can be charged with USB. I also show a USB light in case people want more lighting or don't have the harbor freight lights.

I had a power outage the other day during a wind storm and ran a 110v 15w (60w equivalent) 1600 lumen led bulb for over 14 hours from one of these Go Power Plus devices which I purchased at Walmart for $25.00, on sale. Best purchase ever! I thought it would be crap but to my surprise it is actually very, very good for what it is.

You should check out these camp fans with light. 3 settings on fan/3 on light. They are usually orange and black. With a straight flat swivel handle. And a hook that is folded in the center of the handle. I have had one almost 2 years the other at least 10 months. They both can run a fan on low settings 6 to 8 hours . You can run the lite on low at least 4 to 5 hours. You can fast charge ,you can charge phones ,etc . I used during camping with my back pack solar fold out ( I had to chase sun lite, but I was able to keep the charge 3 to 4 out of 5 and charge my phone plus used the fan/ lite some. You can find under 20 to over . But sure worth it. One I use every day still going strong.

15 volts at 3.2 amps is 48 watts, so a 50 watt solar panel is probably OK under all circumstances. As a matter of note, "12 volt" solar panels are 36 cell panels and typically produce 17.5 to 18 volts under load and 21-22 volts with no load. I did a brief test with a 100 watt panel in late afternoon sun and it was delivering 58 watts - the GoPower Plus didn't complain. When (If?) we have sun again, I'll try when the sun is a little higher in the sky ;-) The charge controller is PWM (from watching volt and amp meters while charging). A 6p arrangement of 2500mAH cells should be able to accept at least an amp per cell so 6 amps charge current should be OK for the batteries but I have no info on the charge controller or the BMS, except that the "12 volt" output can deliver 10 amps so the batteries should also be able to accept that amount of charge. I've not tested this yet (waiting for the XT60 connectors) so I can't guarantee that it won't make smoke. The 5.5/2.1mm charge and 12 volt output jacks aren't really useful at more than 2 amps for an extended period - some of the commonly available plugs and jacks can't handle more than 2.5 amps - I have some smoked examples. The charge jack was too warm to touch after an hour or so. 5.5/2.1 is definitely not adequate for 10 amps at 12 volts. I'd suggest replacing the charge and 12 volt output connectors with surface mount XT60 connectors - about $1 each from RMRC (RC hobby supplies). There's room to do this on the front panel, but it would require complete disassembly of the unit which not many people will be comfortable with. XT30 connectors would be adequate for the power levels but XT60 surface mount connectors seem to be more readily available. The AC inverter is modified square wave and under a "100 watt" load (100 watt incandescent bulb) a KillAWatt showed 83 watts and 87VA at 116 volts. The inverter draws between 0.18 amp and 0.21 amp with no load. The frequency wandered from 53Hz to 59Hz - not exactly the 60Hz they advertised. Checking the waveform with a 'scope showed constant jitter. Not a place to charge your 20 volt and up power tool batteries - some even say to NOT used modified square wave power with the charger (Ryobi 40 volt). Using a constant current battery discharge device on the "12 volt" output (actually that's battery voltage, not 12 volts except when freshly charged). the GoPower's BMS shut it down at 9 volts (normal for a 3s pack with 3 volts/cell minimum safe voltage). The battery delivered 13.78AH or 91.8% of its rated capacity - that includes the 0.083 amp that the display draws and it is on for any function of the GoPower Plus. The battery bars dropped from 4 to 3 at 40.6% of AH capacity used (59.4% remaining), 3 to 2 at 72.8% of AH used (17.2% remaining), 2 to 1 at 86% of AH used (14% remaining) and 1 to 0 at 91.8% of AH used (8.2% remaining but the BMS shut it down at 9 volts). The number of bars is not a good indicator of the amount of power used or remaining. For any future testing or use, I will turn the GoPower off when it drops to 2 bars (~70% discharged) to get maximum battery life (number of charge/discharge cycles; for ultimate life charge to 75%, discharge to 25% to get perhaps 5,000 cycles - chart at batteryuniversity.com). The USB and QC outputs are powered by DC-DC converters as the battery drain for a 5 volt, 2 amp USB output is 0.826 amp and the battery drain for a 5 volt, 2 amp QC output is 0.863 amp. I've been working on a spreadsheet that will tell you how long the GoPower Plus can power your list of items and provide a reasonable guess at how much solar is needed to recharge that amount of usage. It's still a little rough but you might find it interesting to play with - and much faster than running the battery to shutdown ;-) wizardanswers.com/files/GoPower-Plus-Loads-Time-time-select.xls I added some "Accidental On/Off" protection by cutting some short lengths of 14 gauge house wiring, forming them into squares slightly larger than the power buttons and hot-gluing the wire in place. If the GoPower Plus falls on its face or is pressed against a flat surface while vertical, it won't turn on or off by accident.

The capacity meter's bars are mostly meaningless. Here's what I found testing with a 2.5 amp constant current load. Battery bars dropped from 4 to 3 at 11.19V, 2:20 from start of test 6.096AH (40.6% of rated AH used) 68WH (40% of rated WH used). Battery bars dropped from 3 to 2 at 10.29V, 4:13 from start 10.92AH (72.8% of rated AH used) 118WH (70% of rated WH used). Battery bars dropped from 2 to 1 at 10.03V, 5:00 from start 12.93AH (86% of rated AH used) 37.6WH (82% of rated WH used). Battery bars dropped from 1 to 0 at 9.1V, 5:20 from start 13.78AH (91.8% of rated AH used) 145WH (87% of rated WH used). Rounded to an even per cent of the rated 15AH battery capacity, the first bar is 40%, second bar is 32%, third bar is 13%, fourth bar is 6%.

Hey question I picked up the portable power station and I tried to get the 13 watt solar panel briefcase but they stopped making them. So instead I went with the 18-watt thunderbolt at harbor freight but it didn't come with any connections all it has is two USB ports with no plugs. So I'm thinking I should do what you what you did here and get the USB to 15 volt input so I can charge with solar. But as you stated here you said USB is a slow charge. Are there any better options out there as far as solar panels that are cheap that can charge this thing now that the briefcase thunderbolt isn't made anymore

This till me that SHTF has common sense..and not relay on one person for information.....that a guy you can trust for information a guy that does his homework....he can go a long way in solar....or anything really...

I have misplace the original charging cable. I plugged a laptop PS in, 12v at 2 amps. I am only getting up to 83% charge. Then it goes down to 82 and as low as 80%. Then gets back up to 83% after 12 hours or more time. Any input on this?

Sorry I just noticed your question. The number isn't the state of charge it is the temperature. When the 4 bar battery indicator stops flashing it is charged.

I just bought this generator. I’ve been using it to charge my phone, but today the adapter isn’t working to charge the generator. Has anyone experienced this and what do I need to do now? I don’t want to just throw it away.

You can probably find an alternative to charge it. I would search for a power supply that would work on amazon before tossing it. I lost my charger but use the solar panel in my case.

For the USB power questions. I googled this chart below. Keep in mind the adapter I used was a regular usb style If you are using a different style you will need to look around on amazon or wherever for a usb type c or whatever you want to use to 5.5 x 2.5mm barrel plug. The cable has to convert from 5 volts to 12 to 15 volts. If it is just a pass through cable that sends the standard 5 volts it will not work. So what you will need is the type of cord I used in the video where it converts 5 volts to 12 to 15 volts DC that fits 5.5 x 2.5mm barrel plug. bobsbrain.com/usb-c-charging-explained/ I hope that helps.

@@shtfgarden thanks, but I have no other options, it came damaged, with only the car cigarette charger. I got that fixed and now the cigar charger don't work. I dont know which or what solar panel to buy here.,bcuz dont have the options , like in the USA.

@@jadeitehaywood2383 The max charge rate is 48 watts, the size is 5.5mm. There is charging protection so you don't have to stick to 48 watts. Anything you have that you can convert to 5.5 that uses a standard solar panel will probably work just fine. The voltage rating on panels are open circuit but once they are being used to charge something the volts will drop so an 18 volt panel made for a 12 volt system with a 5.5 mm barrel plug (or adapter) should work. You may be able to find a 15 volt power supply that uses that same size even if its less amps (I lost mine and got a 15v 2amp from amazon that works just fine.
