OVOO:
Shortly after leaving our Khongor camp, we had our first encounter with an Ovoo. Scattered all throughout the Mongolia countryside, Ovoo’s are rock and stone mounds used to worship the mountains and the sky. When you see an Ovoo, it’s customary to to stop, circle it three times clockwise and then throw a rock on the pile in order to have a good journey. Some people also leave offerings and if you’re in a hurry, honking the horn while passing an Ovoo will work as well. There’s no such thing as too much luck on a long journey so we made sure to help out…
FLAMING CLIFFS / Bayanzag / Баянзаг/ Bain-Dzak/ Ömnögovi Province
Named because of the red and orange color they give off at sunset, the flaming cliffs are renowned worldwide as the site of many important scientific discoveries. It was here in 1922 that American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews first discovered fossilized dinosaur eggs, proving once and for all that dinosaurs did in fact lay eggs. Over time, Many other fossils have been found here including the bones of the velociraptor as well as other prehistoric mammals. It’s been speculated that Andrews served as the inspiration behind Indiana Jones, and while this has never actually been confirmed, it seems totally believable given this setting, and Roy’s larger than life persona.

Thanks +Mélissa Paquet :) I really don't remember how much the trip cost honestly. I think the tour itself was 55USD per person per day, but that number will go up or down depending on how many people you have in your party.

I noticed that baby on 4:46 had a tiny wristband on his (or her haha I don't know) hand, that looks exactly like the ones thai parents put on their little kids to protect them from ghosts. So I guess Mongolians believe in ghosts, too. Did you have the chance to hear any scary stories, during this big trip?

It's a boy but looks like a little girl right? We were told that little boys are dressed like little girls to confuse the spirits that take the souls of little boys. This happened to us all the time as we never knew for sure it a toddler was a boy or a girl since a child's first haircut (between 3-5) is a big deal and a celebration. I think because a huge population of Mongolia still follows the Shaman religion, we since saw tons of signs/offerings/traditions towards respecting the spirits of the land. (like the ovoos we had to stop at, or the woman who would cast milk in the air after miking the goats, etc.) so yes... lots of spirits in the air and customs still followed today. Just like Thai's and their millions ghosts. ;) My favorite is Krasue by the way, lol. - Lynn

Mongolians don't have time for silly things like Peanut allergies! In all seriousness though, you can add peanut allergies to the list of thousands of other things that, if they were to happen anywhere out in the wilderness, you'd be totally screwed. I wouldn't be surprised if UB had the nearest hospital for just about every other place in the country. Thanks for watching!
