SCRIPT:
INTRO:
After a restful 2 days in the Great White Lake area , everyone was finally healthy and excited to be en route to our next destination, the ancient capital city of Khokorin
ERDENE ZUU:
The Erdene Zuu Monastery is the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. Constructed in 1585, its seen it’s fair share of history as it was damaged by war in the late 1600’s and rebuilt again in the 1800’s. During this period, the grounds contained 62 temples and housed over 1000 monks. In 1939, Comrade Marshall Choybalsan ordered Erdene Zuu to be destroyed as part of the communist purge labeled “the great terror”, which resulted in the death of over 10 thousand Mongolian monks. Only three small temples as well as the external wall survived the the chaos. Ironically, in 1944 Joseph Stalin put pressure on Choybalsan to maintain what was left of the monastery as proof to outside visitors that the communist regime did in fact allow freedom of religion. For 4 decades, the temples were used as museums and it wasn’t until the 1990 democratic revolution in Mongolia that Erdene Zuu was again used as a place of worship.
FINAL THOUGHT:
As we entered the ger it hit me, this was our last host and the last time we’d ever pass the milk bowl around. Lifelong friendships were formed and many unforgettable memories were made out here in “the land of the blue sky”, so that night we celebrated
