Thanks again to Jason for the loan of another watch and a 'virgin' too! Good to see that a soalr quartz model has been so popular. And good to see that Seiko have worked some of their magic and made this one bigger, but not any heavier. Spooky! Cheers, Jody

I bought late enough to be able to look at this version side-by-side with the 39.5mm "older" version. Granted, it's 100% objective, but I found the pure black and white smaller/older version more appealing. Add in the 20mm vs. 21mm lugs, and this one lost out. I really like having the solar-quartz option in my collection...in either design.

I have the original SSC813 and I like it, I always change the straps on these watches to leather anyway so wasn't that bothered about the bracelet but it did annoy me how they didn't match it. Your criticism of the date is absolutely correct and people might not appreciate form the video as it is zoomed in. Not only is the date tiny but it is highly sunken, so at arms length it is basically impossible to make it out. Dateless would have probably been nicer in this case.

I have the ssc813 and absolutely love mine. Wears perfectly. Usually I am not a fan of quartz because it's so much lighter and doesn't feel like a quality product but the ssc813 is super heavy, it's great. Idk if I'd get this bigger one, I like the vintage-ish look of the ssc813 but this still looks pretty good. I definitely like the hands on this one compared to mine. Love what Seiko is doing lately, they are my favorite brand by far. Also I'd just like to add Jody, on last years as well as this years model you said something about the date placement. Honestly, it disappears unless you are actually looking for it. I like it.

I have the solar powered SNE497 but I only paid around 250€ for it, on sale, including what I paid for an aftermarket steel shroud. I think Seiko solar movements are awesome but I just can't get over the price they are asking for these Speedtimers. When you can get a mechanical chronograph for just a bit more I think you really have to want one of these to justify the price.

I have one of these and the only complaint I have is the end links to first link joint is really loose (looser than the other bracelet links) this allows the bracelet to hinge neatly under the watch, but at the same time it make a weird looseness between the end links and bracelet. I'll be putting the bracelet on one of my other seiko chronos anyway since I have ordered a black Bund style for it, but thought y'all should know about the first links- other than that, nice watch.

For this price you could get a late 80s Ebel 1911 Sport Chrono; it may not look like the modern El Primero, but it is powered by one. I paid a bit more than that for a solid gold one (though less than a Tudor steel chrono) and that 36k tick sound is just special.

I had the 39mm and turned it quickly. The date was hard to read and it wore too heavy. The bracelet just looked odd and I couldn’t find an aftermarket one for it. Tried this one on the other day and was hoping for some improvements… It’s a great looking watch, but it just doesn’t work for me. Thanks for another excellent video.

I like it. I know it is unpopular - but 41mm is not a large watch for everybody. Visually, my favorite size for my wrist is 42mm and I prefer watches in that size additionally because I need to be able to tell the time without my reading glasses. I have a few nice watches in 38mm that I bought in the beginning of my journey and it is really hard for me to tell the time without my glasses - the main purpose of a watch. Now that I pay more attention to the legibility, I also have a few 40mm watches that are legible.

I miss the days when Seiko had entry-level prices. A couple years ago I got a similar-looking watch with the same 3 dials, the size is 41mm in diameter. I do not know the other measurements. It has the mechaquartz movement, silver dial, and black register dials. The strap says it's leather but it is stiff. I only paid 159.00 and I have not had to change the battery yet. It has mineral crystal and not solar.

Seiko is in lala land with regards to their pricing nowadays. Granted it's not apples to apples but the fact that this watch retails for more than an automatic Tissot PRX is kind of wild. I really wonder how they think they can justify $695 for a quartz watch.

Excellent video Jody. I always am of the opinion that a Chronograph needs to be bigger to be usable, at least for my old eyes. Lol. I only have two, 43.5mm Orient and a 44mm Pulsar Solar. I did order the Mr. Pagani's House of Design all blue Moonswatch version with the white bezel, it's only 40/42mm depending on where you measure it, so I'm interested to see if I can see it! Have to say, love this Seiko, but my Orient is exactly the same 3 subdial Panda dial, so I'll skip this one.

This is sort of funny: Seiko comes out with a bigger version of their "Goldilocks" (to me, anyway) solar Speedtimer, at a moment when watches are slowly trending back to smaller cases. About a week ago, I got hole of a 90s-era Seiko SUS-series chrono (7T32-9000), and now I'm wondering if I'll ever put up with anything much over 40mm on my wrist again; this thing is even a tad smaller overall than my 017 Alpinist. Were I in the market for something new, the smaller Speedtimer would win the day handily.

A really nice looking chronograph. And I'm not bothered at all about the color of the subdials. Actually thought they were navy blue and thought they looked great as such. But I also mistook the hands to be black with white lume...which I would have liked much more. I hate polished silver hands on a light dial. Matte black with white lume would have been very nice. And the tiny clasp with almost no micro adjustments...why?? I mean how the watch actually wears on your wrist is not small part of how much you enjoy a watch. Such a weird thing to not address after I'm sure many many people have commented on the importance of such over the years.

Seiko has a big plus when it comes to revision. You will always get things replaced. The Problem with microbrands is, that you newer know if they are around in 10 years. Watches aren't made for big collections. Most people want to own like 2 or 3 good pieces that will last a very long time. Can't go wrong with seiko when it comes to that

Also the three register chrono layout that is standard nowadays seems to always have one useless register. I wish Seiko would reisssue some single register 30 minute chronos like the original speedtimers used. It’s a much cleaner look and easier read.

I'm happy they released the 39mm one before because IMO this one is watered down in two spots: [1] The standard AL insert bezel is nowhere near as cool as the solid steel angled one of the 39; and [2] the skindiver / 62MAS case of the other one is just cool compared to this more standard one. But that isn't to scrape on anyone who likes this new one, I'm happy it has its fans. And I feel the pain of the 2-hole microadjust on my original too, unfortunately. Had to replace it with a CASIO clasp cover that has 4 microadjust holes, so that's kind of embarassing for Seiko. Great review as always Jody.

Has anyone else noticed that the action on the upper "A" button has less of a "click" when you press it than the lower "B" button to reset the chrono? Obviously, it's nothing like an automatic watch where there is a very definite click, but in my case the upper button feels a bit "softer" than the lower button and while there is a subtle click, it's less than the lower button. Is this normal? Anyone else notice this?

I paid about a 3rd of that for my Citizen Blue Angels in Florida about 10 years ago. Still less than £5-£600 today. Keeps perfect time, no way would I pay this for a Seiko with their much mentioned quality issues. Great video as usual, Jody.

Seiko is trying to go the Rolex way of sizing instead of cleaning up their quality issues. SMH.

The guys who are watching channels like this are mainly people who rather buy 10 microbrand-watches from aliexpress than one proper watch. When these guys go after a seiko they buy from strange websites with huge discounts and wonder why they get watches with alignment-issues or stuff like that, because they just bought a watch that has been sent back from another customer. If you go to an actual shop and buy a Seiko you will never get one with issues. I also have quite a few Seikos. Mainly vintage watches but i also bought the new alpinist. That one in particular has Saphire, 20 bar water resistance, great lume and heritage. Something you won't get from a 50 dollars aliexpress-watch. But these guyys don't care and buy more crap

@@TheMonsterHunterTV I've bought several microbrand watches, and most of them have Seiko movements in them, and they run spot on...no issues. In the main, the whole watch is good, and i think the most I've paid is about £90. I think the issues that people have with Seiko quality, is when you're paying 90 quid, you accept it may not be perfect. BUT, for a brand like Seiko, with their heritage, I wouldn't expect alignment and finishing issues, and cheap bracelets and clasps. This watch on this video is a grand! You'll get far better quality from Tissot, for example, at that money. Seiko are far too hit and miss, and too many reviews and reviewers back this up.

@@markdarwin4390 Precisely :) The fanboys won't admit this, sadly. I do own many Seikos too, even made-in-Japan ones, and I can say that, unless you're particular about minor details, they are great watches. Many who don't see these issues are usually not particular about them. I have a made-in-Japan Seiko bought from an authosrised dealer, and the chapter ring is slightly misaligned. I didn't even notice it until I saw watch reviewers pointing out this issue, and it was a couple of years later.

Very nice looking chrono, but that price?! Citizen manages to make solar chronographs for far less money, even their chronographs with more advanced features are a lot cheaper. Perhaps you should do a shootout video between one of these Seiko solar chronographs and a comparable Citizen model to see if Seiko justifies the price?

Seiko solar, that's not so common, is it? Very nice looking watch, but over 1k a bit exorbitant - cheers for quoting Aussie dollars! I also agree about the date wheel location, weird and gets camouflaged against the dial.
