Go Kart Torque Converter Setup Install (TAV)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The one in the video was discontinued but here is a link for 2 other similar ones.
1" diameter engine shaft: amzn.to/3fIofkf
3/4" diameter engine shaft: amzn.to/3uLqbgr
Here is a quick video showing the torque converter setup install. You can find these TAV torque converters all over the internet. They are cheap and easy to install. If you are going to be using your mini bike or go kart a lot or you don't want to take it apart very often then I would suggest getting a Comet brand torque converter. Yest they are more expensive but worth it in the long run. Do you want a Harbor Freight tool or Milwaukee! If you look carefully you'll get a sneak preview of another yerf dog go kart i'm restoring and rebuilding.

I'm just an old mechanic wishing I was still working and having fun like you guys. One thing I noticed is that you all are calling this a Torque Converter. I may be out of date but a torque converter is more like a fluid coupling. This is more like THE CONSTANTLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (CVT), it changes it's shape to achieve different speeds. This transmission is used in some Mazda vehicles, I just don't understand how the term Torque Converter was applied to this. Little things that get me lol. Next thing you know they'll be calling it Pound Feet instead of Foot pounds www.mazdavictoria.com/what-is-cvt/

As the output shaft spins, it engages a clutch in the driver spindle at a certain RPM, if under a minimum RPM (Idling) it wont engage the driven pully (the back spindle the belt drives which is also attached to the chain sprocket and wheel)

Whats the difference in hp with a clutch and torque converter. Faster take off or more high end?

  • @-DIYPRO-

    @-DIYPRO-

    3 жыл бұрын

These you get more low end torque. You can always switch sprockets around for what you're looking for. For example you could put this on a Go-Kart with a smaller count tooth sprocket on your axle and I would give you the low-end torque to get up and go and higher speed.

  • @-DIYPRO-

Is the engine on a kart already? Sometimes when it's not installed it will still spin. If installed on a kart then yes if the belt is spinning then the kart will move forward. First thing I would do is turn down the idling rpm.

@@-DIYPRO- yes its on the go kart.. is there something that let's the clutch free spin? Or does the belt slip over the pulleys at idle? I'm guessing the pulley on the engine has to turn when the engine turns.. just confused on how the belt doesn't try to spin all the time making the cart move if the belt is spinning

  • @-DIYPRO-

    @-DIYPRO-

Sometimes if there is no load on the engine (like the wheels are up off the ground then it can do exactly what is shown in the videos but as soon as you put it on the ground then yes the pull will free spin until the rpms get higher. Yes sometimes the belt will spin as well but it will not have the force to engage the driven pulley. You can test it out by rolling the kart over to tree or something stationary. Try starting there, that will stop it from taking off in the event of it engaging while just at idle.

Blackhorse Racing makes the only decent inexpensive ones. I have a 40 that never skips a beat and just got a 30 series from them also. These things need to be perfectly staight and have the belt on the correct way. Not implying the uploader did this, just leaving the advice since that is at least 90% of the time the problem people have.

Yes, the torque converter is idle until the engine reaches a certain RPM. It depends on the torque converter and engine though. The engine will idle under the needed RPM until you hit the throttle.

My chain rubs the pulley, or whatever you want to call it, so, instead of placing the key washer between the plate and sprocket, I have placed two washers on the left side of the sprocket and the pulley, moving the sprocket and chain to the right just enough to clear the pulley, but someone told me if I don’t use the key washer on the right. It’ll destroy the bearing.
