Go Home! - Installing Limit Switches on a Diode Laser

In this video, we will take you through the process of adding limit switches to the Scuplfun S9 (or similar diode laser). We will cover the physical installation, wiring, and configuring with GRBL firmware. We will also cover how to set up a macro to easily enable the limit switches each time you connect to LightBurn. In a follow-up video, we will cover the process of flashing clean GRBL onto the controller for a more permanent solution.

    This was exactly what I was looking for! I got my first laser engraver last week, and AtomStack A5 Pro and found out real quick that not having limit switches was going to make my experience even more challenging and it's a hard enough learning curve. As mentioned in the video that different brands models may have to be done a bit differently and that was the case with mine for the Y axis as there's not anything to hit the switch. I made a small bracket attached to the inside of the top front wheel bolt using aluminum angle to hit the switch and it has finally found it's way home thanks to you guys!!!

    WOW! This is the best video on how to install limit switches on Sculpfun machines, the supplied China videos with the links they supply tell you to watch outdated KZread video, download outdated software and tell you to burn it to your new 32bit mobo which could result in making it useless. This is by far a much better way of doing it. It also resolved a big issue we see new people seem to always encounter with the limit switches/printer working in reverse. Awesome video, very informative. Good Job ;).

I don't know what lightburn or sculpfun have done, but I installed my limit switches and followed your coding and it worked perfectly but before I created a macro, I copied the coding and decided to test it before actually creating the macro, I turned off my laser and closed down lightburn and then started lightburn back up, switched on my laser and pressed the home key and the laser moved to the home position without creating the macro. Can you throw any light on this please? 1.3.01 is my copy of lightburn.

Issue 1 is when i hit the home but it moves only so far in the correct direction so i have to hit the home button until laser is homed, Issue 2 is that when it hits the limit switches and the lights come on it backs off so far that the lights go off and then it surges ahead to rehome itself and stays on the limit switch with no back off and the lights stay lit. I have the atomstack 5r pro My hard and soft limits in machine settings are set to false if that matters. If i forgot to give any info Please just ask me for it. If I understand correctly, there are only two limit switches for the homing position (left and front). What about the other two sides of the machine: right and end positions? Is it possible to mount two other end stops there, or are motherboards of diode laser engravers limited to two switches only?

  • @lightburnsoftware7189

    @lightburnsoftware7189

    2 ай бұрын

    There are ways to wire it so either of a pair of switches will trigger the limit stop, but it’s not really needed. Once the machine is homed, as long as it doesn’t lose position the firmware won’t allow it to go out of bounds - soft limits enforce this, and LightBurn will warn if you try to send something outside the usable area too.

    I installed my switches, easy enough to do. But for some reason when I press the home button, it moves in the right direction then stops after moving towards the physical home position. Once stopped there it will not do it again. IF I move the laser back or to the side. press home it goes to that spot again. Like it has determined that this location is home.

    Is there a reason you went with bottom right over bottom left? GRBL expects bottom left to be 0,0 so using another corner is likely going to require an offset macro. You can read more under the CNC section here: docs.lightburnsoftware.com/CommonGrblSetups.html#getting-machine-settings The options will be an offset in console that you can turn into a macro (This will have to be entered each time the machine turns on) or swapping limit switches to bottom left.

    Since the max work area size can be set in GRBL firmware and in LightBurn there is no need for max limit switches. Most have the auto home toggle on startup checked so it auto homes to the min limit switches each time the machine connects to LightBurn. This ensures it will not run out of bounds. In some cases you can force it out of bounds but the work of configuring additional switches both physically and on the firmware side is probably more work than its worth. For the additional modifications we have not tested them. Most diodes do not have a Z that is motor driven.

    thanks. :) I'll give that a try-not holding my breath though, but then that's what I get for buying a cheap laser engraver. Lots of DIY. At least if I blow it up, it didn't cost me too much! Seriously though, I really appreciate a reply at all, much less on a weekend. I am amazed you guys are still monitoring this video, given its a year old.@@lightburnsoftware7189

    Added the same limit switches to my S9 and with both plugged into the board, Lightburn will not connect to the laser, though it will if only the X axis is plugged in OR the Y axis plugged in, if both are connected, I get 'Waiting for connection' in the console window. The board I have on mine is the DLC32 v1.0. All wiring correct, plugs aligned correctly

    That is really odd. I was going to suggest something may be shorting but if they both will work on their won then there is no reason they shouldn't be working when both plugged in together. This is the first time I have heard of this. If you have not please contact support@lightburnsoftware.com images of the switches/wiring will be helpful.

    @@lightburnsoftware7189 One of the issues with not connecting might be the thickness of the wooden raisers. I made mine out of 1.6mm thick, and the contacts of the limit switches protruded and made contact with the aluminum rail. Solution was to trim down the contacts on the bottom side of the PCB with the snipping tool, or to use thicker wood. Hope this helps.

    I added the switches and it goes home great. the only problem I have is now I can only jog laser in one direction in Y and one in x direction. I try to frame and it goes to the opposite diagonal corner in rear. I only have setup with the macro so I power down and restart without macro and it works fine but I can’t home. What did I do wrong?

  • @lightburnsoftware7189

    Did you select the correct corner for origin? If not that would cause things to be mirrored and could cause movement to behave as described if the laser thinks it is at max distance in one direction. Also, I would try absolute coordinates for the Start From mode.

    If the laser is disconnecting when the switch is triggered I would check your wiring. If you are using similar style endstops and the 5v line is mixed up the laser could be shutting down to protect itself from damage.

  • @TalkingGIJoe
    @TalkingGIJoe Жыл бұрын

    Since the X axis runs from left to right and both sides of the tram travel together, there is no reason to mount the limit switch on the farthest point from the board... the right side is just fine.

  • @lightburnsoftware7189

    @lightburnsoftware7189

    In the case of this machine as long as the sides are mirrored and it will be triggered on either side location wont matter for Y. For X you would want the switch on the left side to match what the GRBL firmware will set it to. You can apply a workspace offset if you do want the switch and laser to home to a different corner but it is an added step.

  • @lightburnsoftware7189

    We have not tested the S10 specifically, but in theory other than possibly homing direction (this will depend on the wiring of the steppers) everything else should be the same. You will want to enable homing, and hard limits, choose auto home on startup, and make sure it homes the correct direction.

    In theory as long as it is running GRBL, and has the connections for limit switches on the board then yes. However, we have not tested it on the S10 and you will need to be careful when wiring to make sure the pinout is correct.

    You can route the wires differently if preferred and there are other limit switch styles. We chose these due to their common form factor and that they come with enough wire that you do not need to do any splicing\crimping.
