The Baron Arnold Quintet was conceived by trombonist Baron Arnold during the coronavirus pandemic, and the group’s debut record “Riotous” is a product of all of the confused emotions, creative opportunities, and pent-up energy that are a familiar feature of this time. It is also an expression of some of the musical relationships Baron has cultivated for more than decade: with drummer Elé Howell, who also grew up in the Bay Area, California, with bassist Matt Adomeit, who he met while studying in Ohio, and with keyboardist Joschka Oßke and guitarist Igor Osypov, who he met after immigrating to Berlin. These five personalities and six compositions of Baron’s have combined to form an album that is emotive, contemplative, and unselfconsciously modern.
