Go Faster for Free? Weight Reduction for the Track Focus St225

In today’s video, I take the focus to a local weight bridge so I can get an idea for how much the car weights.
After getting the results, I get the tool kit out to take as much weight out as reasonably possible without making the car unbearable.

Remove the heater matrix and put in a t7design light weight heater. You can save a lot of weight that way in the front. It’s a big job though as you need to take out the dash. Would also recommend doing what you said and re locating the battery into the boot

Seats and also carpet weights a big amount I have fully stripped mine out and put some sparco bucket seats in that weight about 7.5kg each compared to 23.5kg each

Thanks for the comment mate, I wasn’t aware of light weight heaters so I’ll definitely consider one of those. Do you remember which model you fitted to your focus? Also when you removed your carpet did you end up weighting it? I plan to remove mine this weekend Thanks for watching!

are you going to ac compressor delete that with increase the air available to the engine. I've taken my car apart completely and for the doors you could get a sheet of aluminum place it on the door instead of all the electronics. Some polycarbonate is pretty good I wouldn't know how much weight savings it is but its pretty pricy. It would be super cool to test your aero kit one day with some basic tuffs and also undertray to clean up that underbelly airflow with an actual diffuser. fixed Bucket seat would be another thing to add just so you can handle the car a bit better. The dashboard is got to be at least 5 kilos as I bought one from a wrecker for that car. smaller battery and less electronics. probably already know all these but would love a video about it. love your videos bro keep it up.

Thanks for the comment man, these are all great ideas and stuff I’d love to do one day. The door cards and ac delete are first up on the list of things to do. The ac delete is quite expensive for what it is though unfortunately. But will all be done in good time. Carpet will be coming out next weekend if all goes to plan so will feel a lot more racecar then aha. Thanks for watching!

Ive seen places making full carbon pre facelift Front wings / fenders and also bonnets / Hood's and another way to save some weight you can get a non wide body style WRC front bumper for pre face as well

Carbon body panel is definitely something I’d love to get one day. They would actually make a big difference in the focus as the body panels (doors specifically) are really heavy. And weight in the front is my issue at the minute so lighting those panels would definitely help. The wrc bumper idea is also quite good as it’ll also increase air flow. Definitely something I’ll look into. Thanks for the comment I hope you enjoyed the video 🤙🏽

Interesting video. Buddy they are heavy buggers but to see 12’s your gonna have to dig deep Perspex windows and carbon fibre panels etc imo spend the money on power to counter the weight issue

I agree fully with that yoda. I’ll take as much weight off as I can reasonably afford but ultimately the car will be getting full bolt ons with Rs injectors etc and that’s the way it’ll see the 12s. There’s a few guys in aus running mid 12s on a hybrid turbo, so with a stripped focus with full bolt ons stock turbo, a 12.99 would be nice to see. But I’m mainly building it as a track car anyway, the drag racing is just a fun thing

Remove the front Door speakers, passenger seat, empty out glove box, relocate battery to boot for better weight distribution, empty washer fluid bottle, just be careful if you remove seatbelts and rear seats and door cards and trim that you’ll fail your next WoF with those items removed

Front door speakers is a great idea! I’m planning to removed the door cards and replace them with those flat blank ones so while I’m in there the speakers can go (no radio anyway 🤣) battery relocating is also another one that’s why up on the list, surprisingly no kits available so I’m a bit nervous on doing it on my own for the obvious safety reasons. Thanks for the suggestion mate I hope you enjoyed the video

@@turbo_tyler_ take your carpet out too, you’d be surprised just how much it weighs and you can easily put it back in, remove the PAX seat as well for track days, with all that out you be in the 12xxKg range before you know it

You’re just destroying a perfectly good car for no reason. If you want a lighter car sell the focus and by a lotus Elise.

  • @turbo_tyler_

    @turbo_tyler_

I would love a lotus, but the price difference between a focus and one of those is quite a lot as you can imagine. I also wanted to have a 5 cylinder hence using the focus platform. I do like the focus but its biggest downside is the weight. And as I’m planning to turn this into a dedicated track car, I’m not worried about the impractical nature of my mods. The other thing I’m trying to do is make sure all the mods are reversible, for example all the interior pieces I’ve removed I can simply reinstall them in a few hours and the car will be back to normal. Thanks for the comment mate, I hope you stick around for more videos to see how the focus turns out and if I can change your mind!

@@turbo_tyler_ @turbo_tyler_ there are two things that you can do to improve a car. 1 A really good service and fix any mechanical problems that the car has. 2 Put the car on good modern tyres. Tyres have improved a lot in the past 10 years or so. After that you are wasting your time and money. It's also well known. Particularly with a ford focus. In fact, I've even heard people who work in the factory point this out. That if you take it a part and put it back together again, it's never the same. You often find it starts to make noises when driving.

  • @turbo_tyler_

@@DaveDangerous74 I do agree with your first two points, fixing mechanical issues and good tyres will definitely improve the car. Both of which I have already done (tyres still waiting fitting but have been purchased) However I disagree with the idea that those are the only things you can do to improve a car. These engines have been known for these massive tuning potential, with simple modifications like a better flowing intake, exhaust and intercooler, you can increase the horsepower and torque to make the car a lot faster. And by improving the chassis with better suspension components to handle the increased power, you can create an overall better performance car. Although it’ll most likely be less reliable than the factory car.
