The Hippiearab Podcast --- S1 E8
Since the creation of man, the gym has always been associated with physical health. Not many talk about the mental side of the struggle. Putting on your gym clothes, driving to the gym, preparing for your lifts and just showing up- all for yourself. The beauty of the gym is the betterment of oneself, not necessarily in the way one looks, but in the way one feels, adapts, and grows in their sense of confidence and discipline in all aspects of life- just by stepping foot in the gym.

Looking great doesn't matter to me anymore. I just don't want to use a cane, or fall on the floor. I have diabetes type 2, high blood pressure, and a lung disease. I take medicines for each disease. Exercise has kept me from other deteriorating factors. Exercise does help with aging. Congratulations on your fitness journey.😊

May Allah (God) make things easy for you. Have patience and trust in Him always. This reminds of Hadith (Sahih Muslim 2807 reference in book; Book 52, Hadith 42) where the topic talks about dipping the most affluent people in the world in The Fire and the people that suffered the most in this world in to Paradise. Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said that one amongst the denizens of Hell who had led a life of ease and plenty amongst the people of the world would be made to dip in Fire only once on the Day of Resurrection and then it would be said to him: O, son of Adam, did you find any comfort, did you happen to get any material blessing? He would say: By Allah, no, my Lord. And then that person from amongst the persons of the world be brought who had led the most miserable life (in the world) from amongst the inmates of Paradise. and he would be made to dip once in Paradise and it would be said to him. 0, son of Adam, did you face, any hardship? Or had any distress fallen to your lot? And he would say: By Allah, no,0 my Lord, never did I face any hardship or experience any distress.

The exercise that has brought me the most happiness is rock climbing. You're so in your body and connected with every movement. You aren't thinking about how you look, you just think about the next rock you need to grab, your body positioning, your feet placement. There's no time for judgement. And, the people are so supportive and kind, so you feel like you're not alone.

Journaling doesn't only help people with their mental health but it also helps organize a person's thoughts about any sort of topic and even a way of expression by addressing those thoughts to someone. I used to only journal when I was going through something or I experienced quite the event so I would only journal on rare occasions but now I've been using journaling as a form of communication to Allah (SWT) by telling him my thoughts and other things in a form of letter which makes such a bigger impact on me and my relationship with Him. Now I journal almost everyday and I feel so good afterwards Alhamdulillah :)

you could not be more right and I relate so much, especially with the overweight phase of my life! I started working out and didn't see the change I was hoping for so my brother (a Gym Bro Dorito) told me he can help. Got me set up with an exercise plan, the numbers, and the goals I needed to see the results I wanted. As well as telling me the best diet I can follow is a reasonable calorie deficit. I made the excuse of not wanting to go to the gym so my brother gave me his dumbbells and started the home workouts. I followed what he told me and got strict with it. I am now seeing the results I want and see that the goal is achievable. All that to say is I challenge myself more, I am more productive, I get better sleep because I plan my days to fit all that needs to be done, and best of all I'm proud of what I have achieved in terms of bettering my diet and health.

@DanielLikesEggs It's not that simple haha. I am also skinny and I eat well, but it's very difficult to gain weight and build muscle. Eating more hepls, but it's also important how you eat and if it's healthy or not. Metabolism also plays a role. So it's not just "eat more".

At first the gym scared me at first I was so scared because I thought people were gonna judge me. I was underweight too and my mental health was terrible. I started going to the gym and starting gaining weight/muscle. I’m so much happier now. Also people at the gym don’t care about u I promise. They’re too busy thinking about their workout.

This is so true, people want to be at peace and content. Happiness is only a temporary feeling and after you come down from dopamine high you will feel empty/sad/tired. Another thing to remember is that no matter how much we try we will never be fully content in this dunya(world), that’s why we must be patient and grateful to be closer to the feeling of contentment.

I’ve spent most my life hearing obsessive and cruel language about mine and other peoples bodies. It kind of ruined my healthy development honestly, I suffered health risks because I wanted to be small enough for people, and I’ve spent the last four years fight to be healthy again. I found that physical activity gave me a reason to be grateful and happy with my body. On the upside I’m no longer underweight and stronger then ever. I really hope younger teens see this vid! ❤

It's so depressing when you don't go to the gym for a while and once you're back you realize you no longer can lift the same amount of weights. Or you realize that your cardio is nowhere near to what used to be. You're left there wondering: "damn, what did I do to myself?", which can be extremely motivating, but it hurts to experience the damage you've caused and it's even harder to accept that you did it to yourself.

Something I'd like to say to give others a food for thought; be mindful of what is going into your ears and into your heart as you work out and develop this amazing machine Allah has blessed us with called the body; al jism. When I started listening to the Quran In English Audiobook at the gym (I completely eliminated music from my life, alhamdulilah), I can almost quite literally feel a divine source of power in my body. Some may call it a placebo, but I'd argue otherwise. When you are doing pull ups, lifting weights, running on the treadmill, boxing, all while listening to the Word of Allah, you develop a different why. And your muscles not only grow bigger, but the roots of their growth, if they were like a tree, are grounded in the pleasure and understanding of Allah. The desire to dedicate your body that was formed while digesting Allah's Word, back to Allah.. grows with every gram of protein you consume. Then it becomes easier to understand your purpose, and if you are a man, live a life more prophetic, almost imitating Rasul'Allah. You want to use these muscles to protect your wife, one of Allah's servants, that he has entrusted the safety and provision of to you. Your children, who he has blessed you with. To be an example for the next generation of a strong Muslim man so that they might be even more successful. Everything you do with that new body becomes about serving Allah, because his Words are etched in every muscle fiber. Branded on them. Do you really think He would allow that to go to waste? He is Ash-Shakur, the grateful one, the most appreciative. Which one of your Lord's blessings would you deny? May Allah grant us all greater understanding. Ameen.

I was working out at home with one single weight. Even just that is so helpful mentally and physically. Not only was i seeing physical changes, i was also feeling so good. I was tired at night, energized in the morning, and just feeling really good. The best way i could describe the feeling i got when i was working out every day is....icy? I feel a cool sensation that may just all be mental but its like a slight iciness going through my veins along with confidence. I have since stopped working out because we do not have AC and its dangerously hot to workout in here but I will be picking it back up again at the beginning of fall, and taking it more seriously.

Great talk about exercising for our well-being. All our health problems are due to lack of exercise and bad eating habits. Unfortunately, the majority of Muslims run into health issues from mid-age to old age due to not exercising. Thanks for addressing this issue and spreading the message. Hopefully, more people like yourself inspire and motivate our population for better lifestyle change. Thank you!
