I am a welder by trade. Sometimes you have to look at a weld and ask yourself if it will work. If it will then ship it. We all look for perfection in the next weld or surface finish but sometimes the equipment, time, or experience keeps you from finding that satisfaction. Looking for that satisfaction keeps us learning and perfecting. Don’t be afraid to show imperfections in the things that you do. KZread is full of people who edit to perfection and people can’t live up to that in real life. I say good work!

Don't worry about your welding skills. I was clearly put on this earth to make sure that no matter how bad you think your welds, cuts or grinds are, you can sleep safe in the knowledge that there's a bodger in England who makes you look like a machining goddess. Which, of course, you are. My party trick is making tig welds on stainless look like they were done with an arc welder on rusty iron. Now *that's* bad welding.

When I trained as an engineer, I REALLY couldn't get the hang of stick welding, So when we had to make a bracket as a test piece to be marked on, and my welds all looked like I'd made them by throwing lumpy porridge at the metal, I over filled all the weld fillets and ground them back to smooth curves. The examiner looked at it and asked why I'd ground the welds back that he was meant to be marking me on, and I said "The diagram you gave me to work from showed all the corner welds to be perfect radii. You can't make perfect radii with multi pass arc welding, so I decided I'd have to improvised so as to better make the workpiece reflect what I was instructed to make............. By the way, The welds looked stunningly good before I ground them back". I was sure I'd end up getting failed for that, but as I would have failed due to my pigeon sh*t welding anyway, It was worth a shot. He looked back and forth between me and the workpiece 3 or 4 times, Then said "Well, I'm supposed to be marking you on your welding and accuracy. Obviously, I can't give you many marks for the welding aspect. I've tested it and found it's structurally sound, so you got good penetration. The problem is that I can't SEE the weld quality....... But as you've made this EXACTLY as per the instructions, I suppose you have to have full marks for that aspect. For the bare faced cheek of me obscuring the fact that (As we both knew) I was utter cr*p at stick welding, that guy gave me JUST enough marks for the weld so that, combined with the full marks I got for accuracy, I scraped a pass in that module of the course. :D So when people say that "An angle grinder is a bad welders best friend" I always get a warm fuzzy feeling. :D (BTW, My stick welding DID improve dramatically once I realised that you can use the back of your gloved left hand as a guide for the electrode without electrocuting yourself ! :) )
30 Rockwell C is pretty much what you'd expect from 4140 alloy steel in the 'HT' quenched and tempered condition. It's well known for getting beautiful surface finishes when turned and is popular for parts like gears and shafts, so I suspect that's what your sleeve was made of.
Luckely I didn’t choose “sprocket” for my drinking game. It would have killed me.

Don’t tell me what happens, New Zealand. I like to be surprised.
2 thoughts: 1) Go to the welding supply and get a bottle of gas, some .030” solid wire and tips to match, and ditch the evil flux cored forever! 2) get us a reading on the runout on the left wheel of the go cart! Possibly a new Guinness World Record there! Great video! Us old school members like to see folks unafraid to cross the machine shop/welding shop abyss!
Yay! It's Blondihacks time!
Ahh Keying shafts. Takes me back to my apprenticeship days. One little trick for parallels in the milling vice. We kept strips of spring steel banding straps with a bend in the middle and put them between the parallels. This keeps them in place and worked good when changing out parts, especially with the nifty stop you made. Nice work on the content and production!
All those Sprocket cameos give me the idea that perhaps Sprocket needs a sticker! With a ⚙️ type surround (perhaps even cut as a sprocket), and Sprocket’s cute face in the middle. 🙃

I always love projects when you get to use a lot of different tools and different processes.
Thank you so much for rounding up the key stock. My OCD was killing me 😅
Very nice result, We spent a lot of time tinkering with Go karts in the 70's and I remember our shaft and centrifugal clutch problems oh so well when trying to fit different bits together.
Nice work. I don't like to show my welding either. It doesn't seem to matter much if the weld works, and holds in service. Love this channel
Great episode Quinn, and again thank you for showing the end product in use.
Love your sense of humor, thanks for sharing.
Quinn love your teaching skills. I started my apprenticeship 51 years ago worked on some pretty impressive machinery, lathes that are that big the one cut could take up to two hours and you would ride on the saddle. So I do know a bit about metal work but I still pick up great tips from you, love your enthusiasm. I now do metal work for enjoyment at home.
That's gonna be a beast of a Go-cart with that electric motor and chain drive. Please ask him to provide a video of it in operation when it's track ready.
I agree! Great job Quinn!!!!
Most excellent. Love all the sprocket pop ups.
Great job Quinn! These are the kind of jobs I like best where you can use a mix of your talents to do a job for a friend. Very satisfying.
I've got one of those squeeze bulbs...came with some other stuff I bought. I've had no idea what I was going to use it for until NOW. Thanks Quinn!
It's always entertaining to watch your videos, especially with your exquisite humor. I usually pick up a good tip or two as well. It was a simple thing but the way you held the key in the vise to file the end round is much better than my attempts with a belt sander and skinned knuckles.
Nicely done and you are helping with a father-son project. Kudo's to you Quinn!!
I love your attitude at 5:34 . How did you know my favorite ocean sound🥰? Thank you so much, Quinn. 🤗
You should try MIG welding with solid wire and gas some time. You'll be amazed how much better your welds will look. Flux core wire makes things look awful.

I've had days welding that I thought "these welds should be in a textbook", then there all the other ones that give me the reality check. The whole point is to stick two pieces of metal together. You did a fine job. I enjoy your style and presentation.
man i love these videos. it seems that you really enjoy what youre doing, and that is so satisfying and enjoyable to watch !! thanks for sharing your projects with us
As a retired machinist, I have enjoyed watching a few of your videos now. I`m impressed with what you can do with what you have.
I watch Abom, TOT and many more.. NEVER seen such a cool tool as the hardness tester! Thanks for sharing, definitely buying one of these.
Great work; great teaching, and a great sprocket-kitty.
I was glad to see you knew how to properly file a radius. As for your weld always remember everybody that welds started somewhere. Practice practice practice. And always remember practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. In other words don’t practice bad habits, practice good habits.
I love listening to you narrate these videos. It’s like Roberta Ross for machinists. Makes our profession sound a hell of a lot more refined than it actually is. Complete with happy accidents. Sub’d.
Best way to start a Sunday with Coffee toast and Blondiehacks. Quinn before your too hard on yourself just remember the words "fit for purpose".
I really like your videos, thanks for taking the time to make them.

New record for Sprockets Per Minute. Great video as always, camera work seemed especially clear and careful on this one for whatever reason.
Great job! I’ve seen the ugliest welds hold and pretty one brake. Everyone starts the same you just need to practice, you got the strength part right. Thanks for sharing.
Well done and happy days to the Go cart people
I never was very fond on having to cut teeth off of gears when it needed to be done. We sometimes re-cycled gear shaft to turn them into smaller gears when needed and the teeth on the original gear tooth count were worse out. Measuring splines normally requires the correct size gage pins and a means to hold them. In an ID this can be done with adjustable parallels that have a shallow vee cut in the measuring faces. Properly sized the vees do not interfere with the normal use of the adjustable parallels. Cutting internal splines has come light years since I had to cut my first one. Back then it was almost all done by broaching or using gear shapers. Back when I was rebuilding spindles I made up some arbor press plates with the slots just over the bearing IDs for those bearing that needed to be pressed of or occasionally on. I mostly installed bearings on shafts by heating them with an induction heater with a built in temp sensor and de-mag cycle
That hardness tester is really cool! The demo on how to true up something on both ends was very nice.
That is some fine Quinngineering.
Well done Quinn! It runs beautifully in situ.
Very satisfying
Great job Quinn !
Quinn, its a lucky, man, woman or cat that you call a friend , Tip for you , flux core welding is not pretty (like tig welding ) but if you take your torch (flame thrower as the kids call it ) and warm that shaft up than weld it. The weld will look more even because the part is so hot , the puddle becomes molten much quicker the flux goes to the top of the weld bead faster and you also have more pentation from the pre heat ... Thank you for taking the time to make these video's Pete M
Lovely work as always

Very much enjoyed; great job 👍
Very nice AEA (Audial Experience Augmentation) on that helical gear machine action! Nice work!
How quickly 17 minutes passes Quinn, nice job.👍👍👍
I did very much enjoy watching this, thank you. As a former smith/welder I would definitely NOT recommend flux core for anything, except maybe in extreme cases (like being stranded in the middle of nowhere, needing to weld something), as it tries to mimic a stick weld but does it poorly. It is a bit hard to learn how to, but the electrode (stick) will actually serve you better in the long run.
That was really enjoyable to watch.
Nice work Quinn... well done...
Very nice work!
Great little job, well done. I really enjoy your commentary
I think that shaft may have been 4130 or 4140 very common steel in the industry when machining shafts. Very durable and very machinable. I work in the die industry and we use a ton of 4130 and 4140 making downstops. Great videos Quinn I always enjoy your content! Keep up the great work!
Great video again! May I suggest putting a love joy between the self aligning bearing and the sprocket.
i cannot BELIEVE you set up the parallels and laid the key in for machining, yet denied us the tappytaptap. you monster!
Brilliant!
Must be nice to have friends like you! Oh, and Sprocket deserves some extra ration and a long nap for all the extra work. Well done, as always.

That seemed like one heck of a go cart!
A compact Rockwell tester? Wha? I never woulda' thunk that. So cool. The future is NOW! ;-)
You do very nice work. Really enjoy your videos.
You weld better than I can dream about welding
I have been suggesting the aluminium type inserts for mini lathes for some years now, the ground edge and 20 degrees of rake means they need less power than most other inserts. My cnc lathes are a whole 1/2 hp at the spindle so I have been using these on steel for quite a while. They may not last that long, but they are available on ebay for around $2 an insert, so hardly going to break the bank. Nice that someone with more viewers and subs than myself has put it out there as they make quite a difference. Nice job on the part you made, I can't weld. don't even have a welder!!
Nice,good job!
Girl. You are awesome!
Nice job!! 👍🤘
Quinn, your welds look very good, superior to many Mig welds on YT, and you had the added smarts to consider weldability of your materials to use mild steel for the shaft.👍👍👍
Delightful!!
Great job
