What Is a Leverage Gym?
--
Leverage gyms (aka lever gyms) are plate loaded machines that simulate free weights using lever arms and cable pulley systems.
What I really like about lever gyms is that they have safety stops (starting/ending points).
This lets me train heavy without a spotter or worrying about dropping weights.
I can push myself and if I fail, I just set the weight down at the safety spot.
Depending on the lever arm setting I pick, I can also do calisthenics on them.
The GMWD leverage gym also has a plate loaded cable pulley system in the back.
This connects to a high and low pulley so I can do a ton of cable machine exercises (I’ll show you some later on).
If I was starting a home gym from scratch, a leverage gym would be at the top of my list because of how versatile they are.
--
Compare to Other Lever Gyms
--
Other companies that sell lever gyms include Powertec and Body Solid
If you want to compare them to GMWD, here are the links:

Calculating Actual Weight Lifted
--
Since the lever arms are attached to a fulcrum, there is a weight reduction of about 20% of the weight added.
But each lever arm weighs about 10 lbs (20 lbs when used together) so you have to take that into account when tracking weight.
If I added 100 lbs of weight to the lever arms, I would add the 20 lbs from the arms (120 lbs) then multiply by 0.20 (20% reduction).
So 120 lbs would really be 96 lbs.
The lever arm in the back that’s connected to the pulley system creates a reduction of about 50% of the weight added.
So if throw on 100 lbs, I’m really lifting 50 lbs on either the high or low pulley.
Just a little more math to do than normal if you keep track of your numbers.

I have this exact machine and I love it! I will say that the squat bar when attached should be rolled under so it rests on the lever arm handles so you're not relying on tje little pins

I have been using this gym for years. I have not had one injury using the equipment. Also I am able to do many different exercises in a short period of time. My body weight is stable and I am able to maintain muscle tone. The body leverage gym was Instrumental in my rehab through my cancer treatments.

@@ShreddedDad Yes I can tell.
Hi. Thanks for the review. I am wondering how much it is sitting off of the wall for clearance. I see the dimensions are like 55x61, but the actually space looks like you need more space.
Great review! I understand how many would like the machine to take up the need for stability. But for me I like the idea of developing the accessory (stability) muscles which will build more stable joints and improve balance, such as with free weights or even cables to a large extent. To each their own however. For smaller people or their spouses, I wonder if the pull ups using the standard overhand grip (or chin ups) would be a bit wide, and if so that would be the only other con I can see….
@ShreddedDad

Thanks for watching. Yeah depending on size, the pull up handle may be wide but there’s also the neutral grip option
great review and thank you. Looking at buying one of these, but the range of motion is my only concern. Started training to failure and getting very nervous in my current home gym due to no spotter. Thinking I will just have to learn to adapt to the range of motion because too risky going to failure and I know I'm not really going to failure with free weights more like going to my comfort spot close to failure.

Do you know the max load for each lever arm? Is it 250 total between the two arms or 250 each lever arm.
Thanks for your videos. How do you feel about using two do they sync well or do they feel out of sync when using two at once.

You connect both lever arms with a pin so they move at the same time If you remove that pin then each arm moves independently

@ShreddedDad How do you find the pressing angles with decline, flat, and incline? Does the movement hit target muscle or does the fulcrum range of motion not make for good exercise motion?
@ShreddedDad
5 ай бұрын
You have to move your body and/or bench to fit the angles of the machine I mainly do incline and it’s one of the ways where I feel it the most on my chest All I have to focus on is pushing without having to worry about balancing
@chad4835
5 ай бұрын
How about flat and decline? Do you have to raise the bench up on blocks to get good angle for flat? I'm concerned about how high the leverage arm is positioned. Also, do you think so.eone 6'3" would get full stretch using lat pulldown? Thanks so much!
@ShreddedDad
5 ай бұрын
@chad4835 you can set the lever arms to go real low so should be fine for all bench angles but might be too short for you for pulldowns
What about the squat exercise, do you have to start from the bottom up, does it bottom out at certain point, what is the feel of the squat movement? thanks..

Both are versatile so it’s a tough pick You do get a cable crossover with the functional trainer and that’s one thing the leverage gym doesn’t have

Are you happy with tour powertec levergym? Did you experience any (pros or) cons while having it 1 month?
@blazefury8336
7 ай бұрын
@@srbishkrst I've had it for a few years and it has honestly been disappointing overall. I only use it for overhead pressing at the moment. Overhead pressing, especially seated behind the neck feels amazing on it and feels like it helps my bad shoulder. The stretch I get in my traps and deltoids along with the pump in my side and rear delts has made it one of my favorite exercises. It is the only reason I've kept it. All other presses just feel awkward to me and end up bothering my shoulder more than free weights. I had the pec attachment, but ended up selling it for 1/3 what I paid for it because I found it more obnoxious than anything. It takes up so much space and I constantly had to move it out of the way. The Leg attachment feels like a requirement for pressing on it, but feels cheap when using heavy weights for leg exercises. The bench is ok for adjustability, but doesn't feel near as sturdy as my other two benches and I wish they designed it slightly different so I could use my other benches with it, but they won't fit due to the center bar so I have to keep a 3rd bench in my garage gym. The way the GMWD is designed looks like it would work with other benches. The pulley system is okay, but because of the lever arm, you only get the full resistance near the end of each rep. I was able to do lat pulldowns with 320 lbs for reps, which I'd normally only use 220. The weight capacity for it is listed as 300 lbs., but it seemed ok slightly over.
Whats the actual realistic space you need for this machine? Not so much the height because my room where it would go has plenty of height. Just concerned about the length and width, including space for the pulley in motion in the back
@ShreddedDad
2 ай бұрын
It’s 60” wide x 55” deep. I’d leave 5” inches in the back to give the lever arm in the back plenty of room to move when using the top and low pulley

I think powertec costs more and they make you buy a bench I think, this one doesn't I think and Body Solid the same. I think this might be cheaper than both but obviously check. This one is new to me but I researched the others about a year ago but bought neither. I think you could do pull ups and dips on the Body Solid one but not the Powertec, I think and this one I'm not sure. I tried a Powertec at a fitness store and was impressed but I've never touched the others. I'm not sure everyone needs a rack especially if they have low ceilings... I'd consider this one if it's cheaper or more versatile than the others. If you aren't obsessed with being free weight focused I'd consider this one and I saw another review by another guy too and he liked it.

I have the powertec version. It's a very solid machine, one of my best home gym pieces. These Leverage machines are Incredibly versatile, your imagination is your limit to how many exercises you can do with it. KZread channel gym hacks and reviews gives the best info and exercises on the Powertec Levergym. It depends on how free weight obsessed you are and if you want to do the classic exercises or power lifting say or what the crowd does. Some recent studies say it doesn't matter much whether you use free weights or machines unless your sport is power lifting... strength and hypertrophy are the same either way...but old ideas hold on...
