The self-perpetuating social media pre-backlash over this yet-to-be-released book is tedious. I hope/expect that it is just the usual blowhards mouthing off and that it won't have a real effect on sales and actual players. Thanks for the review Ash, Ican't wait to get my hands on this one!

@@bombarded15 AFAIK it's mostly complaints about how SG is "just a reskin of FG" or something similar. Which is true for the most part (although I'd contend it borrows elements from all the previous games rather than "just" FG) but I haven't seen a coherent explanation of what the objectors wanted instead.

"It's just a reskin of Frostgrave"...as Ash goes on to list several ways it's different with tweaked rules. "Reskinned Frostgrave" is exactly what a lot of people wanted. Social media exists just for people to complain about something.

This reminds of when someone tried to "gotcha!" Ken Levine in regards to the similarities to from System Shock 2 to Bioshock. His response was "yes of course, I mean... Shock is in the name."

People complain more when they get what they want.

Massively appreciate Ash's statement at the beginning around "this is a reskin of Frostgrave". I have been really confused to people being unhappy essentially this is a Sci-Fi version of Frostgrave. I'm not sure if people just thought there'd be even more specialised rules to differentiate it from Frostgrave or that it would be an entirely different system but that's the joy of Joseph's games for me, they are so easy to modify that if there's a mechanic you were hoping for, he has given you a great basis to add it! Not to mention the game isn't out yet, we need to see the full book first surely! :)

Ok ok, so... 1. You admit this is just a reskin 2. You admit that the joy of Joseph's games are that you can just mod and reskin them anyway you see fit. Congratulations, you're a step closer to seeing the problem. That is... What's the point of paying for a 'new game' when it's just something that we've all been encouraged to do with the original game anyway? People were wanting to see significant new mechanics, not surface level tinkering, and changes to the fluff. This book brings no new insights to the table.

@@MrGunnar177 They work as well. Like most I love using minis that I have for another system. I am also a huge Fire Fly fan. I have already been thinking of using the Union as Federal Troops. With the setting being after a war it just lends itself to the crew so well. SciFi western is just great to start!!

"It's just a reskin of Frostgrave" cool - my copy of Stargrave will be delivered tomorrow.

Everyone likens the First Mate to an Apprentice, but they're really closer to filling the Warden role from Ghost Archipelago. They provide you access to a whole separate set of tricks from your Captain (Heritor, in GA). They are (or at least can be) more fighty than Wardens though, so they're kind of a mashup of Frostgrave mercenary "Captains" (that name's going to get confusing) and Wardens - and yeah, Apprentices if you want to double down on whatever your Captain's pool of tricks is.

@@17blaziken Yep. You can see how Stargrave is taking some of the best elements from all his earlier games, as well as a adding a few new things. Presumably whatever the next XXXgrave game turns out be will continue the trend.

I want to see if I can use my blackstone fortress and random unpainted/forgotten models in the closet of shame, in mean shelves of opportunity, to make a warband. at the speed it paint, i should be ready when the solo rules come out.

A McGuffin isn’t just any fluff. Even if it is that character’s specific motivation. It has to be the central driving force of the plot.

The painting on the miniatures in the book is simply _fantastic_ !

"Is this going to be StarGrave?!"... "Is THIS going to be StarGrave?!"... "Wait, this IS StarGrave? And it is just what we asked for? Well, now we don't want it!" - Grognards. Grognards never change. Thanks for the review Ash - I'm really looking forward to get this on the table! :D

I wonder if this is intentional dishonesty, or just ignorance? When folks said that they wanted Frostgrave in space, it wasn't meant literally. They want the concept of fg in space, not the exact same game. Anyone can already take the game and rename the nouns - that's not difficult. Ash likens this to 40k to WHFB but everyone knows that those are two fundamentally different games, not least because of setting, but also mechanically, and with how they play. So ironically, yes, 40k to WHFB is exactly the kind of thing people wanted when they said that they wanted FG in space.

Thank you Ash. I don't get why people are upset about it being Frostrgrave in space. Besides Warhammer and 40k, just about every game has done it, Metamorphosis Alpha which then became Gamma World was originally D&D in space, a few years later TSR did it again with Star Frontiers, more recently Pathfinder spun off Starfinder, just to name a handful of the top of my head. Folx really need to chill. While I'm flexing my old nerd cred, Burning Chrome is a perfectly reasonable reference for cyberspace, Gibson set the eponymous short story in that collection (as well as several other stories) in the same Sprawl universe as Nueromancer.

In fairness to TSR, Star Frontiers was very much its own thing, the rules don't really resemble D&D or anything else they ever made - at least at first, the Zebulon Guide variant turned it into something akin to Marvel Super-Heroes. If I understand any of the Stargrave complaints correctly it seems that folks think there wasn't enough work done on the design for it to be worth buying, which is so subjective it's hard to make a rational argument about it. How much change counts as "enough to be worth the cost" isn't a question anyone can answer except for themselves.

I get to use all of my Star Wars Miniatures that have been sitting in cases for years!! Now to build terrain...after having built tons of "ancient ruins" for Frostgrave/Rangers...*goes and buys granny grating, straws for pipes, and apologizes to wife...*

i've got a ton of star wars legion figures that will be great for this. time to start building a campaign for them. I love legion for what it is but my kids like to "level up" so this is gonna be a perfect blend i think

It is great seeing Ash so happy. I'm really looking forward to getting a copy of these rules, plus the expansion, plus the plastic kits.

At 28:30, the "Run For It" rule where you can always get 3" of movement was in Frostgrave 2nd ED. Great rule that my group took advantage of because we had a Witch that was fond of the Mud spell. Great review, looking foward to this book!

The amount of references here is impressive. Appreciate the tenacious D one :)

I have a feeling this is going to replace Kill Team for my lunch game.

Was going to skip watching this so I could have that magical "first time exploring the book" feel like I did when I got Frostgrave but I got impatient, and honestly, your enthusiasm and commentary gave me that same feeling but even better. Excellent video dude :)

This review has me leaning towards this - particularly since they have said they will have solo rules - as opposed to 5 Parsecs. With teenagers, the pile of models that started my foray into this hobby will now have a use. Onwards to the first battle report (totally didn't take long for me to subscribe to this channel)

The action move three inches is in Frostgrave 2.

Or an assortment of Rogue One-esque Jedi/bounty hunter/freedom fighters?

I’m amazed people complained about that. A few people made good examples but the one that comes to mind for me is mass effect being dragon age is space. That’s exactly what the fans wanted and it sold incredibly well because of it.

Fantastic! What an added bonus for an otherwise boring Saturday! My copy is preordered since last Summer - I already have a great set of minis from my forays into Starbreach which built on my 30 year old Rogue Trader / WH40K collections, but I still have enough of an unpainted pile to get cracking on while I wait for the postie to deliver. These will also come in handy for the upcoming Xenos Rampant too! Looking forward to your playthroughs - hopefully Owen doesn't break it too much!

I don't know why people are complaining that Stargrave is Sci Fi update of Frostgrave, sounds good to me and I'll be buying it. I would say though that I'm not that impressed with the sculpting of the North Star miniatures I've seen so far, very chunky. I have several boxes of the frostgrave stuff and they are good.

Thanks for sharing Ash. I'm looking forward to seeing the rules myself when they ship next month. If looks like a fun set of rules good for any SF and Space Opera figures - 40K, Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Firefly, Galactica, etc.

Have several SciFi minis kits from failed games that I can FINALLY use for something!

I actually find it really surprising HOW well this game can be applied to a lot of other sci-fi miniature properties. I have yet to not be able to mirror a character from another game for Stargrave.

Biomorph sounds also like the Genetic Infantry from Rogue Trooper.

I found that the perfect game to use all your Rogue Trader minis in rhymes with Rogue Trader.

in Frostgrave 2 you can push yourself back from combat. both this and the 3" move are new rules in FG 2.

@@ogremark5 Hmmm, I wonder if you could do Rogue as a bioform and then model his chipped equipment as members of his crew? You could do something like that in Rogue Stars - make all the "gear" characters with Robotic and Tiny and have Rogue carry them most of the time. Sigh. Shame that game never got the support it needed to really break out. We wouldn't even be talking about Stargrave if it had, but nope, abandonware by both the creator and Osprey. Sales must have been terrible or something.

Thanks, this helps to plan some crews. I think I see where all weapon types fit now - almost all rifles will be called “carbine,” most heavy weapons will be classed “rapid-fire” except for the “grenade launcher” that includes missile tube type launchers. Flechette/shuriken guns can be called “shotgun,” and “flame thrower” could be any area effect projector. (Edit - looks like the loot tables add a lot more granularity in the advanced weapons and gear)

Joseph McCullough posted the crew building rules chapter from the book on the Stargrave Facebook group, so now you can TRULY plan some crews!

Very excited for this game. Like many others I'm already planning my crew. But also I want to see how a mostly shooting game will work with this engine. After backing the new western themed zombicide from CMON I've been working on a western reskin for Rangers of Shadow Deep, Rangers of Shadow Gulch if you will.

Splitting off Shoot and Fight into different stats seems like a good start. I suspect it might have been better to do a third defensive stat - Agility or something - but I guess we'll see.

sounds great! very excited. was hoping to hear more about the bestiary so I know what minis to have ready to go. I'm guessing my Mansions of Madness minis will cover most of the monsters...maybe? i know I'm set for the populated areas - pirate shock troops will be some Flash Gitz!
