GMC 300E Geiger Counter

TDL- GMC 300E Geiger Counter
Oh wow, this is a really fun device to have. I have been fascinated with these for years and I am so happy to have the opportunity to finally try one properly.
Its amazing to think that these murderous death rays are constantly buzzing around and through us. Perhaps some things are better left unknown? :)

    14500 battery is a standard and easy to find. Noob :p I really like it better than the 9v rechargeable in the older non-plus model. It last longer and is lithium so no problems swapping it out for a higher capacity one later on if you want, though it already lasts really long. I use this meter for tracing down local sources on my daily walks. You sit in one of the parking lots of those places with the business suites that have one of those cheap clinics/dentist offices set up in in USA and you can hear spikes on the meter sometimes from no shielding on the Xray imager. I remember one that actually had it right by the window facing the street. You could detect the xray emissions out to the street. Not good for you or the electronics and other stuff to be around that too much all the time (fine for short time like at airport).

    As a vintage watch collector, Radium and Tritium luminescence led me on a interesting seperate journey to study radiation. I also live near a nuclear plant and are about 30 miles from Ottawa IL where the Radium Girls story took place. If you are intersted I highly recomend watching the 1986 documenatry Radium City which can be rented on VEMO for .99 cents. It's interesting that they use a glass tube instead of the typical metal SBM-20. Also appears that it can be user replaced after clipping the zip ties which is a nice.

    Go into an antique shop. At least here in the US, it used to be common to mix uranium into paints. Fiestaware dinner sets before 1972 are an infamous example. There's also uranium tiles, which can actually be found in some public places such as Los Angeles Union Station.

    Thank you for this video. I bought one a couple of months ago to have with my Radex Geiger counter. It is easy to use and works very well. I bought a test card and some trinitite glass from the first atomic bomb explosion from United Nuclear, and some uranium ore samples off EBay. They are fun to play with. There is a lot of safety information on the United Nuclear website regarding handling and storing uranium ore samples. And a LOT of information on radiation on bionerd23 KZread channels. There are places she shows that have normal background lever more than 100 times what we have due to radioactive minerals in the ground. Only enough the people who live there do not have elevated cancer rates and they don’t know why. One of the comments on this video mentioned getting elevated readings around dentist and medical offices. I’ll have to try that out. I have not heard the multiple clicks with mine, but I think there are times when a cosmic ray and also as you said a solar flare cause a cascade of particles to reach the ground. Check out radiation accidents on Wikipedia. For the price of this detector it is not a bad idea to have one. Radioactive materials are shipped all over the world and if there is an accident in your area you can see immediately if you are being affected.

    That "headphone" jack isn't for earphones. It's a data output jack to send data to a computer.

  • @kishascape

    @kishascape

    3 ай бұрын

    No it actually is for earphones and that's all it ever was, the data output on these is sent over USB, it's also how you download the log file from the counters internal memory. On the older screen less GMC-200 it was misrepresented as a data jack but was still really only a audio output, all the software did was listen to the line input from it to detect the count rate and it wasn't very good. I would frequently use my GMC-100 back in 2012 that way with earbuds on and the unit stashed in my pocket while riding bus.

    The battery (cell) used in this meter is a standard AA cell, rechargeable Li Ion. In a pinch you can use alkaline or Lithium cells. ie. Energizer if recharging is not available.

    Your correct Am-241 found in smoke alarms gives off a 60kev gamma ray for every decay of an alpha particle. However this energy is in the x ray spectrum of energy and so your detector is very inefficient in detecting low energy x rays which is why Your not detecting much.
