🔴 GMAT Score Comparison | Convert Old GMAT Score to GMAT Focus Edition Score | Percentile Score

GMAC has provided a chart that helps to convert GMAT scores of the old format into equivalent GMAT Focus Edition scores. The underlying basis for the conversion is to port relevant questions into the three sections of the GMAT Focus Edition from the old edition and bringing about the comparison based on equivalent percentiles.
The chart has many interesting insights and a few unexpected revelations.
For instance, many of us may have thought that the equivalent of 720 in the old version is 725 in the GMAT Focus edition. Nothing can be far from the truth.
Watch this video to get a detailed analysis of how the scores compare and how any serious GMAT Focus Edition test taker should prepare keeping the changing scoring system in mind.

Thank you very much for such an informative video, Sir! I did not consider how the percentiles are likely to change over the years due to the test takers now focusing more on topics like IR. That would mean we could see a shift in actual Q4 2023 percentiles from what GMAC has put out on the basis of the data of the last 5 years. Praying it isn't too much of a shift until Q2-Q3 of 2024... I was hoping to score some points as an early bird taking the Focus Edition in 2023.

Hahaa... I have heard of others angling to do the same. The percentile rankings will change once the GMAC has enough data points to adjust the rankings, yes. The GMAC usually publishes percentile rankings data once a year but they may choose to publish the rankings more frequently for a period of time. Remember though that your actual score depends on your performance. A score above Q85, V82, D80 should continue to remain competitive even once the percentile rankings are adjusted. Make sure you do the required prep to achieve the same. Do not hesitate to reach out to Wizako for help in the process. And do check out the Pro and Live Online courses at wzko.in/pro and wzko.in/live respectively.

@@Wizako Duly noted, thank you so much! You're absolutely right, the sectional scores are what matter at the end of the day and I should be aiming to perform well there. It was very reassuring to hear this from someone else. Will definitely reach out when needed, thank you so much once again!

When will GMAT old edition be obsolete? I am planning to give GMAT next year April. Will it be available?

  • @Wizako

It is unlikely that classic GMAT would still be available in April. The official information is that the test will see its end in Q1 of 2024 - which will be by March, at the latest. If you cannot write the test before April, consider preparing for the GMAT Focus Edition.

Easiest thing to do would be to check their deadlines and the school's FAQ. We do not yet know whether Focus will go live before the deadlines. If the FAQ page of the school does not mention anything, try emailing the school.

You can write the GMAT a maximum of 5 months in a 12-month rolling period. For example, if you write the GMAT once on August 1, 2023, then you can write the test four more times before July 31, 2024. There has to be a minimum duration of 16 days between two attempts of the GMAT. If all these conditions are satisfied, then yes, you can write the older GMAT edition twice this year.

how many questions need to be correct in order to score 525 in GMAT Focus ?

It is not that straightforward. There are many variables such as the difficulty of the question, the topic of the question, any patterns in your errors etc that also have an impact in your score. However, an average of 80-85% accuracy in all sections should get you a 625+ score.

Hello, I need 650 in old gmat or 595 or 65.3% percentile in the focus edition. At this point is it benfical for me to take the focus edition considering the scenario you have mentioned in the video?

Hi, I think what you should be considering are your deadlines for the school you are trying to catch (exact start date of Focus edition will be known only by the end of the month so you may or may not be able to meet some deadlines). Also, take a mock and see what your weak areas are (if Geometry and SC are weaker than IR, go for Focus edition, and if IR is weaker than geometry and SC, go for classic edition). Good luck!
