The root of problem is the weak economy and low wages, not the cost of living. Elsewhere, CoL is even higher. Lots of Portuguese working in Switzerland (literally the most expensive place in Europe). Americans, hire us remotely as individual contributors! We are extremely competent.

  • @derrames3504

@@ruimpinho the root of the problem is always politically debatable. one can say that virtually about any city and any country which is lower compared to the country of origin of the immigrant. if we wanna talk about real problems we should address this ridiculous logic that incites people from better-off countries to settle in ours while the population of the country they want to migrate to is not developed to their standards. that creates a plethora of struggles, one of the reasons why people are resorting to far-right political parties. EU should prioritize locals over tourists, expats and digital nomads. otherwise you risk Europe becoming a Disneyland and local culture and society being completely obliterated and forgotten

The recent influx of Americans to Portugal has made it difficult for locals to survive, especially in major cities. The increased demand for housing has led to a significant rise in rent and property prices, making them unaffordable for many Portuguese residents. Additionally, the overall cost of living has increased as businesses and services adjust to the higher spending power of American expatriates!

@@telgrupos6143 Absolutely, it's not just Americans, but they do make up a significant portion of the recent influx. The number of Americans moving to and visiting Portugal has notably increased, more so than tourists from many other countries. This heightened interest has had a substantial impact on housing prices and living costs. Managing this situation requires careful intervention by local, regional, and national authorities to ensure a balance between welcoming tourists and maintaining affordability for residents.

I was in Portugal with a tour group last October. We visited Porto, Lisbon, Algarve, Coinbra, etc. Probably the typical 7 day destinations for most tour companies. Other than NZ, Portugal is the only country I was so impressed by, that I would want to move there. Many mentioned great/healthy food, friendly people, wonderful weather, etc. However none mentioned how clean it is. Granted in the larger cities one might see an overflowing trash can. Imagine my surprise and delight as I looked out the window of our bus, whether on an interstate or smaller road, I never saw one piece of trash! Unlike here in the USA. To me this shows pride in one’s country and environment. If I were not 73 years old, I’d consider moving there in a heartbeat.

  • @rir79

Your mentality of “I want to move here” is a real issue. Why don’t wealthy people improve their own countries in terms of civility (that includes trash) instead of trying to find the usual bargain in a foreign country?? That mindset has horrible consequences for the native populations of the countries you say you love… Portuguese people do not live in Disneyland, our landscapes and heritage site reflect who we are and we are the ones who will need to preserve it. But for that we need to be able to stay in our country. So why would people want to help make things worse?? You can say “blame your government” all you want but behind their offer is your need for a bargain at the expense of natives. There is no offer where there is no demand. I have respect for the elderly but always wonder why elderly people enjoy moving to other countries to use the healthcare of countries where they never paid any taxes. Glad you liked Portugal, but just some food for thought.

There is something really valuable to learn from this experience of Americans coming to live in Portugal...first portuguese people will learn with Americans how to be positive and have entrepreneur mindset, that risk is a good thing and not a bad thing in terms of doing business...second, Americans will learn with the portuguese not to rush things, that life is not a rat race no more, that everything in life takes their time and it’s pace and everything will work just fine! In my humble and honest opinion, it’s a win-win situation for Americans and portuguese! Just have in mind one thing 90% of portuguese can’t afford a house 500000$ or more...so this is really your market...luxury market...don’t buy houses less than this because the portuguese will not be able to live anywhere else in their own country and that’s a shame! If all the locals runaway the culture of the country will end and what is the point of living in another country and culture if it’s not there anymore?! So we must achieve a balance so everyone will live happy and fulfilled in a certain country and culture...I hope Portugal will become that success story for both! 🤗🙏🏻

"first portuguese people will learn with Americans how to be positive and have entrepreneur mindset" - first of all, that depends on the Americans. Brazilians and Hispanic Americans aren't very different from the Portuguese in that case. And even with the Americans from the US or Canada what generally happens is not that Portuguese people learn how to be positive and have entrepreneur mindset, what happens is that prices are inflated and Portuguese people can't afford even to buy a home, which ends up pulling people out of the city centers, which in turn inflates prices in the suburbs because of higher demand and not enough houses. That's the unfortunate reality.

Good luck finding a local in one of those beautiful villages. The Portuguese are being forced out of their scenic and traditional towns where their ancestors have lived for hundreds of years because Americans and northern Europeans are buying up all the houses, raising prices. The quality of life has worsened drastically in the last ten years because of gentrification. It has increased the cost of everything and crime has risen in a country that until recently was one of the safest in the world. The foreigners that come and that perceive themselves as "expats", which are nothing more than immigrants with much more money than the national average, do not learn the language, do not establish contact with those who already live here and erase traditions, places and values just to have access to a luxury life at a cheaper price. Your vacation home is one less house for a Portuguese. Regards from the Algarve.

Many Americans (the majority) are leaving Portugal. Rising house prices, new bureaucratic challenges and the end of golden visas are putting US families off living in Portugal. American mates didn't move to Portugal. They moved away from somewhere else. Its just temporary. A romanticized "limerance" mindset.

Yeah... Foreigners coming into several countries in Europe and buying hauses and land the feel it's cheap, even paying a bit over... And so rising and rising the prices so that the locals can't afford it anymore. Don't know what the solution to that is... Cause it's not only an foreigners thing, it's a wealthy people thing, people in our own countries do it too... So a thing about rich vs poor, not local vs foreign, and you don't have to be crazy rich to take more than you need and there for make it unavailable for others

Visited in 2017 for 9 hours when I flew TAP, free layover between Rome and Marrakesh, Morocco. Due to jetlagged, the lusbon hills are brutal. I didn't buy anything heavy, i only bought a kitchen towel! The only food i live and ate as soon as i found a Cafe, was the egg tarts!!!! Its Portuguese national dish! I even bought half dozen at the airport and took it to Rome 😅 to enjoy! The language is the only major challenge! I met a young Jewish in September 2023 who migranted to Portugal.

“Egg tarts” i wouldn’t consider a national dish , it was just a way the government found to popularize the country to tourists. The dish probably close to national dish would be sardines and cod despite cod coming from Norway we love it, for example fish(cod) in chips in the uk were inspired by Portugueses, tempura in Japan inspired by Portuguese ect. But glad you liked it

Here's some news they won't tell you about Portugal 🇵🇹... For locals, housing costs are through the roof. Crime has spiked. International gangs from South America, Africa and India have set up shop. Mass illegal immigration has lead to tent encampments on the streets and a sharp rise in street crime. The once perfect balance of cultural liberalism and deep rooted traditionalism has been upended by far left American style woketivism. This of course is giving rise to right wing parties reacting to all the problems imported by the delusional left. Portugal 🇵🇹 is still beautiful, but for how long?

I was there in November 2023 and the food in Lisbon and the Algarve was not as cheap as they claim, unless you move away from the most common destinations and eat in hidden small family restaurant like a local. in that case, it is cheaper but not dirt cheap. I, unfortunately, encountered various anti-foreigner Portuguese people in Alentejo. I guess they thought I was or had moved there, even though I was just passing through from Badajoz, Spain in the way to Lisbon airport. FYI, I speak some Portuguese. The nicest people I found was in Lisbon (not the foreigners living there though like the Asians).
