GM Class 2 & J1850 VPW Communication with Arduino and XC68HC58 IC Rev B

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I show my new Rev B module, the J1850 VPW module, and how to read the GM Class 2 frames with it. This module uses an XC68HC58 or Motorola MC68HC58 at its core to work. While listed as an Arduino module, it will really work with any Microcontroller that supports 5v logic and SPI communication. Rev B no longer needs 12V.

I forgot to put the Arduino Example for reading in GitHub at first. It's now there labeled Read. ino. That example also works with the Rev A boards.

Im keen to get my hands on a REV C when available, do you have na expected time frame on these? I was contemplating building myself with your schematic but can't seem to source the MC68HC58 so looks like it might be simplest to wait for yours to come available.

Great! This one has been on my to-do list for a while. Just so busy at work I haven't had too much time

Excellent,. I look forward to getting order, but I also have a large amount of work to do then. In my application the E-ROD LS3 utilizes CAN data and the Tahoe communicates using J1850VPW (GM class2) at a much lower speed. So without a protocol converter I have almost no gauges and the ABS does not work. The protocol converter, as I am learning, will have to decode requests, reframe them and pass them along. Then it must decode responses, reframe and provide them to the requester in an understandable manner to the requester. I hoped to find a premade solution to my powertrain swap but had no luck so far. You have done a lot of work here and I for one really appreciate it. I hope to feed some code back to this project if I have some success.

Thanks for purchasing! While in the development stage the Arduino uno rev 4 might be useful. It supports hardware canbus. I'm not sure what version of Canbus that setup your working with has. Is it the GMlan single wire can or traditional canH canL type

I have that same CAN controller, a Tech2 and a pile of prototyping but my gauges are 2002 so need GM class 2. I'm just paying my dues to learn all this stuff and the programming too. It is what it is @@FixedUntilBroken

@@kenworks6068 Did you ever have any luck? I'm doing something similar with a 99 S10, except using a standalone ECU. I pretty stupidly ripped apart my truck before recording any of the raw serial data, so 100% in the dark on what I'm trying to emulate outside SAE PDFs. Guess I need to make friends with someone with a s10... I think there are two j1850 busses to emulate, plus another higher resolution VSS signal needed for the ABS. I think the cluster should be pretty easy using the SAE PDFs, but the ABS, not so much...

@@pontiacg445 I admit being vexed by my attempts to interface with the Tahoe communications bus. I have about 5 different CAN bus interface adapters, some supporting J1850 VPW protocol and none have worked out yet. I'm finishing custom interfaces to add back most of my needs externally. It has a bunch of extra sensors and speed controls for the fans, fuel pump and variable A/C compressor. It also has a LCD display. I'm share the design on the form and GitHub once the smoke in my brain clears.

hmmmm, maybe this is a solution to my issue. I tried reading pcm sensor data to display on .96oled displays with the elm327 bluetooth method but i couldnt get it working with the esp32. Verified the elm327 supports 1850vpw and can link and see data using the phone app. I just want to read the pcm data and send the info to my 6 oled screens mounted in the dash.

Could you use this to put custom info on the DIC of a C5 corvette (AFR, KR, SA, etc.)?

Maybe you can work this one out for me. I have an 03-07 Silverado, GM, ETC. cluster that everything works on, but will not communicate to ipchammer through obdx pro. At first I thought I had an issue with my obdx ppro or my bench testing setup, but after extensive testing with other clusters they all work fine. However, if I try to read this bad ipc then ipchammer/the obdx pro refuses to read anything else until I close the program and power cycle the obdx pro. I'm thinking this is something to do with a bad microcontroller maybe? You're way more experienced so I figured I'd try for your 2 cents. We can hop in a discord call or something and I can show you the setup and everything if you'd like.
