GM Chess Analysis #62 - Did I just play the Game of the Year?
Ойындар
Well it's still early days for 2023, but I was pleased with how this game went at my recent tournament and promised an analysis video... so here it is!
This game was played in round 2 of the Reykjavik Open 2023. My opponent was WIM Anastasiya Rakhmangulova from Ukraine, rating 2266.

Congratulations! Agadmator and Hikaru have already called it your "Immortal". Agadmator even called it the "Simon variation" 😀

The tabia from this game have Simon's flair stamped all over it. I've always loved his romantic attacking style, calculated risk-taking, and geometric madness. This game had it all turned up to 11. Definitely Simon Williams' Immortal.
This is one of the best attacking chess games of the 21st century.
This game has something Morphy about it. The efficiency of white's pieces and the raking bishops, particularly the one on a3. Brilliant game!
I watched this live , the commentators were so excited when they saw the line (via the computer), and both agreed that they thought you would find it . Very Impressive Simon , Respect !

And me..❤
Note the beautiful irony of Harry never making it off the mark - reminds me of Portugal beating the swiss 6-1 with Ronaldo on the bench!😊 Congrats on the game Simon, truely magnificent🎉
I liked it when Blair called it your "immoral" game. I think from a misspelling in a chat. But that name sets it apart. In any case, this is such a brilliant and fun game. I can't get enough of it.
I can't believe all the variations you had to calculate. That was beyond amazing! What a stunning game! This is just Art!
And it was in this position the opponent declared "F a Duck, everything is mate!"
You would give Tal a run for his money with that brilliancy ! Commentated with a touch of humour 😀👍
"Meeting a check with checkmate." Love it. Cheers and congratulations \m/
It's still best game of the year so far, Simon. Awesome attack you put together there.
It's a real pity a little 'fear' creeps in when you are playing the super GM's which stops you playing this kind of 'free spirit' chess against them. "The fear of making a mistake ensures mistakes"...Gary Kasparov

He at least has another brilliant game against super gm Wojtaszek where he sacced a whole rook
Holy cow. The attacking lines in this man's head are terrifying.....
Simon Williams is my favorite GM.
Win or lose, I love the style of chess you play. Great to see one of your ambitious sacrifice attacks come off so well.
Simon, this Bd6 ...Bb4 Nd2! idea that we never saw on the board really just blows my mind. What a masterpiece. I will be showing this game to students for decades to come.
The Ginger Tal !! Those Tal games are rubbing off, mate! Well played 👍🏾
Game of a life time . The great thing about this game is actually white moves accurate and with forceful creativity quite the master peace thing of beauty.
It was a thing of beauty. Did someone once say "never play f6"?

Or f3...
you deserve the win Simon
Been watching your content for the last 8 years or so. You greatly inspired my style (even got your killer dutch DVD and I play this opening at around 2000 level). Love to see your attacking chess!
Simon's immortal game! ♟️
🔥
Amazing play , congrats 😅
Game of the year! 😄 I first saw this game here, the KZread video with Blair Connell and Danny Gormally doing a great job commentating, with no spoilers, which was very thrilling on multiple levels, and have been waiting for you to put out your own analysis video. You are my favorite player, streamer, and teacher, so it was exciting enough just watching you compete, with Blair & others commentating. Based on the title of the video, I went into it with low expectations, really expecting it to be a "boring" game as the title suggested. Then it became so exciting and suspenseful, watching these brilliant and beautiful moves going down on the board, and so many on the internet recognizing my favorite player's outstanding game!
Great video! I was glued to the screen. Great Game!!!! I do think it will be remembered for a long, long time.
Very clear explanations, thx Simon and congrats for your tournament! Greetings from France :)
Piece of art, so well played. Loved to see it live and thnx for the recap!
It's the game of the year for sure!! Nice Rxf7 thx Simon you are a natural born attacker
Absolutely fantastic, my patient today recommended this one, and I just had to give this a watch, thank you to my patient, and thank you to Ginger GM on this beauty of a game. Stunning!
Congrats on such a masterpiece !
Classic gingerGM win! One for the ages.
Congratulations Simon - masterfully done!
Take that Ben Finegold!!

I was watching this live with Danny Gormally commentating. Brilliant game. When even Hikaru is impressed you know you've played a good one! Hope you'll be streaming again soon Simon.
Congratulations. This game will live forever.
Loved the commentary team of Blair Connell and the legendary Danny Gormally!
Really awesome calculations!
A great game. Thank you for your insight's behind your opening idea.
Such clear explanation as usual, and congrats on playing an exciting game.
Man, what I'd give to be a fly on the wall in the room where GingerGM is chatting with the chess viking about pawn f3 loool
All good things start with "so I was in the pub and we got talking..." 😉 excellent game! how do you recover from that? I think playing a beauty like that would've affected my play for the rest of the tournament because it doesnt get much better!
I only wished she played it out on the board instead of just resigning.
Awesome game and hearing your thoughts on it is top tier content 👏
awesome "put that in your pipe and smoke it, daughter" moment when you sacrificed the queen 😊
We all share the joy, GM Williams
Beautiful chess. Very glad to see you are back on a roll.
Fantastic game Simon. Congratulations, and thank-you for sharing your thoughts on it.
Great video! I saw one recap of this already, but I was waiting for yours, and u didn’t disappoint! High art, Mr Williams! Kudos!! 👏👏👍🏽👍🏽
Congrats Simon, I was very happy to see you putting something like this on the board. Well done Sir! I'm always rooting for you, and your success my friend. Cheers🎉
21:20 maybe Qc2 is a killer blow. Pleasure to see your full thoughts on the game. Ideas like Nd2 is what makes you an epic alltime attacker!
So good to see that "sack sack mate" brilliancies in the spirit of legends like Bobby Fisher are still possible at master level today!
Reminded me of a Fischer game from when he was a teenager...
Congrats on your immortal game! It was a thing of beauty :)
great game Simon. I have already watched Agadmator and Hikaru's analysis of it, amazing.
Brilliant! Congrats.
Congratulations Simon! If you're ever in Finland/Helsinki I'll buy you a pint 🍻
Congratulations on a stupendous game!
was waiting for this - congratulations on the game!
Beautiful, Simon. Well done!
Brilliant game Simon! Big congrats, I believe this is a great accomplishment in your career, to have your own "immortal game"!
What's more than "Wow!"? Just "Mamma mia, wow!". Fantastic game, really exciting lines and the signature ginger humour. Encore!
Absolutely incredible game!
Well done, Simon!
You didn't move Harry in your immortal game 😂
I love your chess courses so much, Simon!
"When you start giving away pawns you need to make sure you are not just losing" - wait, so contrary to popular belief Simon does know this monkaHmm
_"Did I just play the Game of the Year?"_ Fcukin ayy you did! that game hit the spot. cheers bruv
A very inspiring game, Simon. Congrtualtions and well done!
Fantastic bro. Really superb I need to by heart this. Loved your analysis and the way you won the game congrats
Love it! Happy for you Simon!
Are you mad?!😂 Unbeleivable, even the variations that were not played. Great stuff. Congratulations.
I played the line at 6.13 in the video at the Reykjavik Blitz tournament against a little kid. It's truly an op line.
The tactics were so amazing I could not see all the tactics until they were explained
Simon you are a true living legend, love you my friend, keep posting
Impressive foresight
Third time I’ve watched this game, but just as entertaining as the first!
Wonderful and congratulations 👏💪
This game is a work of art. Lots of people can play chess but not everyone can play beautiful chess.
Genius. Beautiful explanation, thank you
Thanks to you we get to watch a different great game and not the 9 billionth WCC Game 2 Analysis today

Not trying to take anything away from Simons' game, it is a brilliant one, but actually the WWC2023 2nd game features great play by Nepo.

@@embeleco2342 Never doubted that
This analysis is also a demo of almost every chess tactics that exists haha. Pins, skewer, Greek gift, forks, some rare checkmate patterns etc. This game is as good as any, in my humble opinion. Thank you Simon !
Just think ? IF all of the immortal games in history had the players reviewing them like this at the time ? This is the best thing I have ever seen in regards to a game of the year being, almost immediately, explained in detail by the artist himself. IF others had done this the history of chess would be far more thorough. Well done, Viking raid completed.
This was such a thrilling analysis and a wonderful game!
Congratulations, Simon!!! Your English accent is very clear. I often use your KZread videos in my English classes.
Congrats Simon!!
Amazing game, really well played. Love the video! Definitely a game to memorize.
Did you mention anything regarding a pipe and a smoke to your opponent after the game?
congrats Simon on a great game.
That was awesome. One of the books.
Bravo!!
Wonderful
Great game Simon!
So good ive watched it twice back to back
Incredible game Simon!!!
Honestly, though this video highlights a sensational game, it is also very instructive. Thanks for the insights and congratulations!
Haha I don't think I have heard of the Boring line of the Slav But besides having the game of the year, I'm pretty sure we have now the Ginger line in the Exchange Slav
Really awesome game!
