GM 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 - Exhaust Manifold W/ Broken Bolts - Passenger Side

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I bring you through the process I use to replace exhaust manifolds on a Chevy 2500HD with the big 6.0. This is a pretty common job in our shop and is pretty much the same process for all GMC, Chevrolet trucks with V-8 LS engines. Broken bolts can be recessed or protruding and both are relatively easy to get out if you have the proper tools. come along as I get started on the passenger side fist. -Enjoy!

Man that is so true no matter what you're working on! Yet in on a carpentry repair job next thing you know you got bug damage or ride or something going on and then you got to start dismantling half a wall. If you're doing a bit room addition and the carpenter gets carried away he puts up crown molding outside before the siding is put up and everything else and you have to go behind them and gently pull this expensive crown molding down because the carpenter was a dumbass. Go to run electric and you're trying to pass a wire through a wall and the next thing you know the damn wire is going halfway across the room for some reason! And you're an addict you can't even kneel in let alone crawl on your hands and knees. You got hurricane anchors poking you in the ribs and arms everywhere while you're trying to get this wire to run down where it's supposed to go. Take your pick brother it will freaking drive you nuts. You go out to do something simple and 5 hours later it's still ain't done because something is just deciding to piss you off!

The only vid I've seen of someone extracting that driver's rear bolt it wasn't broken off flush and the guy grabbed the stub with vice grips. Very interested to see how Eric O goes about it. I’ve seen way too many videos that originate in Arizona, Southern California, Nevada where everyone is spoiled. You can take a vehicle apart or 3/8’s ratchet set and not break anything! It is so refreshing to see vehicles in the condition that I normally see them in. That’s broken studs and anything that wasn’t protected from the factory is now swollen with rot almost beyond recognition. That’s the real world. And to see how it’s professionally handled is a nice dose of reality! It’s videos like this that separate the men from the boys, or the girls from the women as the case may be.

I never tire of Dr. O's expertise. Have any of you guys ever wondered why these particular bolts keep breaking/snapping? Galvanic corrosion of the bolt IS the problem. Chemical reaction between dissimilar metals (steel bolt-aluminum head) destroyed the bolt. I suggest replacing the (supplied repair bolts) with zinc chromate or zinc yellow electroplated bolts. Additionally, paint the threads with cheap zinc cadmium paint. The barrier prevents galvanic corrosion. (Hint: kit/bracket available) no welding/ no swear jar.

As a Brit really enjoy your channel in this country we have an annual MOT test for vehicles over 3 years old covering basic safety and emissions, generally we don't see vehicles on the road quite as 'ready to fall apart' as some you see. Takes me back to working on my first car in 1979 it was already 15 years old and even had a starting handle which coz it only had a very poor dynamo got me out of lots of starting troubles - you only needed enough battery power for sparks. Keep up the great videos.

The smoke wrench is one of the most overlooked tools. Whenever I’m disassembling something like this, I don’t even hesitate to break it out. Saves a lot of time and aggravation ahead of time. I’d also suggest some left handed drill bits. I have a bolt removal set, with corresponding easy-outs for each bit, but sometimes just using the drill bit, it bites into the broken end and backs them out. I usually heat them prior to drilling.

Sil Glyde is good stuff. Works great for o-rings and other rubberized seals. As far as belts, I find a dab of that or dielectric grease works wonders if a belt gets coolant on it and starts squeaking a bit. Once the leak is fixed, it helps quiet things up and save an otherwise good belt. Nice work on that Jimmy!

Drilling out the broken stud brought back a lot of memories for me. I worked on aircraft for 31 years and when doing the inspection on the wings we had to take off the leading edges and all the screws are sealed in and a lot of them would strip out on the head at removal and we had to drill and use extractors. All the screws were stainless steel also, hard to drill. Depending on the aircraft we had to take out 1-3 thousand screws.

I worked at a GM dealership for years we stopped even attempting to put a socket on the manifold bolts and breaking them loose. We cut the heads off the bolts with a torch and then slid the manifolds off of what we now have, studs. Now the pressure is all off and you can snap on a regular pair of vice grips and twist them out sometimes a few came out with just fingers.
