    My 2000 Buick Century is starting hard after running to operating temperature in hot weather. You know you shut the car off go into the store and30 to 45 minutes later the car cranks but starts hard after a few attempts. Sometimes you have to give it a little gas. After a few seconds it runs fine. Starts fine when cold. Could this sensor be bad? Another video suggested this!

    I have an '04 Century with 3.1 and mine is located where you say the '98 was underneath the throttle body. My coolant reservoir also does not look like the one you say is a 2001 and the under hood fuse box appears to be in a different location and the air intake looks different. Maybe it was a 3.4? I am getting a "Service Engine Soon" light with code P0128. I thought this would be a job I could tackle but I think I will let a professional handle it. Looks like it is in a pretty tight area and I am worried about over torquing it and cracking the housing.

    Whats the difference between that and the thermostat? is this what controls the gauge in the car and the fan relays ?

  • @ltr4300

    @ltr4300

    6 жыл бұрын

    The thermostat actually controls the FLOW of coolant to the radiator from the engine. The temp sensor just sends a signal indicating how warm the coolant is. Some use one sensor for fan/ecm reading, and another for the gauge, some use just one. GM 3.1 usually 2 sensors. The one up top (as shown here) is for the fans/ecm.

  • @kittymunday1986

    @kittymunday1986

    This sensor controls the guage. The thermostat is located inside the coolant system and will open to let the coolant flow through when it reads that the coolant reaches the proper temerature.

  • @koreymayo8884

    Yes they're definitely is when it comes to buying a new temperature sensor it's usually coated red around the threading but you can reinforce it with something extra like Teflon tape not recommended I'd rather use a compound sealer for a high temperature pipe threads like that but Teflon table not hurt it at all telephone tape just shrinks due to temperature but that's all

  • @kittymunday1986

    The sensor you replaced on the GM '98 3.1 is actually the coolant temperature SWITCH with the 3 blade terminal or sometimes called the temperature sending unit (which you didn't show the terminals, but the round versus oblong top where the wire pignut attaches is a giveaway) There are 3 wires for this sensor, not 2, and as I found out the hard way, if you tell the parts store you need the coolant temperature sensor, you'll get the wrong part for THIS engine. You'll get the same part as you showed on the newer 3.1, which is a coolant temperature sensor, but only has 2 wires. Again that one has the oblong top with the 2 pins for the 2-wire pignut to attach to. The switch only controls the gauge function, whereas the temp sensor has to do with the control of the cars fuel injectors, timing advance and retard, and EFE and EGR valve functions. I had to take the sensor back and that's when I found out that there are 2 different ones for this car. So where in the GM '98 3.1 is the actual coolant temperature sensor? If I could share pics on here I would! And my car is a '98 Buick Century with the 3.1 V-6. And I bought the Duralast sensors at Auto Zone.

    +melvin mcmichael I had the same problem, its due to a relay fuse that is under a black fuse box under the hood of the car, they are usually silver in color and they are square shaped. There is a legend on the top of the box to let you know which one is the fan relay, Sometimes you can just replace that and it will work just fine.

    If you have the setup I see a lot, the throttle plate bellcrank is in the way, yes? If you don't have any combo of wobbly socket that can worm in there and get it done, you'll need to remove the throttle body. Not a big deal. Leave the coolant lines attached, if you can move it out of the way with them on it. It doesn't need to move much, just enough to get a straight shot in there.
