It is amazing how Gloria Swanson was always light years ahead of her time in everything! In 1979 she was already talking about the importance of eating healthy foods. Now we are in 2016 and most people still do not believe that.

When Gloria mentions that she would let Merv in on a lot of secrets in about a year, she was referring to her autobiography, SWANSON ON SWANSON, which would be published in 1980. I met her walking with her daughter that spring in Central Park, and we sat on a bench and had a nice conversation. What a lady!

Ol' Merv was having quite a time during "I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair!" Gloria was unspeakably elegant and gracious. Not only did she preserve her figure (at a time when younger stars than her were dying off in droves), but she kept her MIND. She was a very thoughtful sort of person. Got into the heart of things.

What an authentic interview! Interviews should always be like that... natural. Nowadays, the interviewers want all the attention to them and complete ignore the guest. Great interview, that showed a lot of respect and admiration toward Gloria Swanson, the way she surely deserved.

Such a great clip, thank you for posting it. I do love seeing Gloria Swanson, amazing interview but love seeing Ted Knight as well. I'm a big fan of his and its very hard to find any interviews with him from his time on the 70's talk show circuit. He made a lot of those "variety show" appearances that were popular back in the day, which are for some reason, much easier to come by than any of his talk show appearances. Thanks again, great stuff!

Gloria did do films after Sunset Blvd. How about "Three For Bedroom C" which she did right after Sunset Blvd. In another interview, Miss Swanson did say she was swamped with movie offers after Sunset Blvd. but she rejected all of them because they were all inferior rehashes of Sunset Blvd.

This is how I remember Gloria Swanson and her crusade against Processed foods. 40 years later it's still a major issue. * Also the actor that she was talking about who went into interior design was William Haines. Basically he was let go by MGM when sound came in because he was an open gay man. They needed to dump him.

@@TheMediaDirectory Louis B. Mayer ordered Billy to dump his boyfriend, Jimmie Shields, and marry a woman. Billy Haines refused, and pretty much told Mayer to go fuck himself, so Mayer fired him. But looking good and living well is the best revenge. Billy went on to become the most celebrated interior designer in Hollywood with such prestigious clients as his good friend, Joan Crawford, Jack Warner, Carole Lombard and many, many others. He and Jimmy remained together until Billy's death in 1973.

Mr. Mayer wanted Mr. Haines to parade as a heterosexual and give up his lover JImmy Shields. Mr. Haines responded by asking Mr. Mayer to give up his wife as an even exchange.
