Gloomhaven Monster AI - The Basics

This video covers everything you need to know to master the basics regarding the monster / minion AI system in the board game Gloomhaven. I cover monster activation order, focus, movement, focus tie-breaking scenarios, ranged focus and attacks, and interaction with traps and hazardous terrain, as found in the Gloomhaven rule book on pages 29-31. Additionally, I include visual examples to assist in rule book explanations.
Once you've mastered the monster AI basics, check out the Gloomhaven Rules Quiz here on BoardGameGeek and test your knowledge:

    Slight error with your example around 13:00. You showed the tiebreaker from the position the Archer had moved to. Monsters will select all of their targets from their initial position, not from their destination. The end result in this example was the same, but there are definitely cases where it matters (as I'm sure you'll bring up when covering the AI Quiz). Other than that, really great presentation!

  • @LambosNerdery

    @LambosNerdery

    Exactly. First priority is lose disadvantage on the primary target, second priority is maximize the attack, so with movement two the Bandit Archer would move two spaces to be able to lose disadvantage and still hit two targets like you say. Obviously I agree with the sentiment of how 3D terrain and minis really add to the immersive experience of playing the game, and I get quite a bit of enjoyment out of creating and building the levels, as well as finding the right miniatures to represent the monster standees. For miniatures, I have a few videos that cover where I get my miniatures from, so I suggest checking out that series here (with more to come when I finally finish finding replacement miniatures for every GH monster): kzread.info/head/PLryCVQ4gJgx_2LIVgdxQP8fDM9bo5hajH For tiles and props, those come from a variety of sources, all depending on which level build you are referring to. The simple answer is a mixture of Hirst Arts 3D terrain casts from my early terrain builds, and 3D printed items from my own 3D printers for more recent terrain builds. For specific terrain or scenic pieces, I usually have provided links or explanations for everything I use to build my scenarios (miniatures and terrain) in the descriptions of my 3D terrain board videos, which you can view here: kzread.info/head/PLryCVQ4gJgx8JOVNedf5UTuLTzp0doXE_ If you have any other more specific questions, feel free to ask and I'd be happy to help out where I can. 18:30 Is there any rule that would have the monster blocking the path of the bandit move out of the way, if say that monster had a range 4 and could attack its focus staying there?

  • @LambosNerdery

    @LambosNerdery

    2 жыл бұрын

    Monsters in Gloomhaven are lazy by default, they only move just as far as they need (or not move at all) to attack a single target. The only way the blocking monster would move was if its range was reduced, it was forced to move by an ability (such as by the Mindthief), or it was pushed/pulled by something. Basically, if it can attack an enemy at its current position, it will not voluntarily move, even if that means other monsters get the shaft because of its own laziness.

    At 13:00 isn’t the scoundrel physically closer for 2nd tiebreaker? Like, if I took a ruler from edge of each of their hexes it would be closer so shouldn’t that be the tiebreaker #2 or have I misunderstood something on physical proximity?

  • @LambosNerdery

    @LambosNerdery

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sorry for the delayed response, I've been quite busy with work for the past few weeks. Proximity is in reference to the number of hex spaces away an enemy is. The physical distance measurement isn't used, it's simply counting the spaces to the enemy model by the shortest means possible. In the scenario at 13:00, both models are three spaces away, causing a tie.

    Have you ran into how monsters consuming/creating elements are used? I’ve searched forum after forum on google and am stuck in my scenario, only on #4 but I’m just stumped as I cannot find anything going into detail on this in the rule book or online

  • @HeezyfoCheesy

    @HeezyfoCheesy

    4 жыл бұрын

    For example. Scenario 4. Wind demon pulls shield 1, move -1, atk-1, then can consume (any):(create) air.. I understand this element is created for all other wind demons this round but how do you think this plays out? If their only card this round is them creating it, then it goes away at end of round, they have nothing on their card allowing them to use air buff any other attack they’re making.. I’m just wondering what exactly the point of that being on the card is doing for them. Thanks in advance if you’re able to get back on this!

  • @LambosNerdery

    @LambosNerdery

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@HeezyfoCheesy, you're right in stating the Wind Demons can't take advantage of the wind they created in that same round, but that holds true for every figure on the board. "It is not possible to create an element and consume it on the same turn" (p. 24). When an ability creates an element, "this is represented by moving the corresponding element’s token to the “Strong” column of the elemental infusion table at the end of the turn in which the ability was used" (p. 23). So the element is created after all actions and movement are completed by the creating figure, which means it can never take advantage of an element created by itself. "At the end of every round, however, all elemental infusions will wane, moving one step to the left in the table, from “Strong” to “Waning” or from “Waning” to “Inert”" (p. 24). Elements can be consumed from either the "Strong" or "Waning" columns, so a monster or character can take advantage of an element they created only by using it in the following round when it is in the "Waning" column, provided it is still there. So, in response to your question, the air created by the Wind Demons doesn't help them in the round they create it. But, if in the next round their card has an ability that consumes air and that air is still in the "Waning" column, they would be able to consume it there and take advantage of the added effect.

  • @LambosNerdery

    @LambosNerdery

    4 жыл бұрын

    Monsters don't need line of sight to focus an enemy, just an unobstructed path to a hex where they could eventually conduct an attack. If a monster is revealed somewhere on the map, and a path exists to an enemy model, they will move along that path using the least amount of movement hexes to eventually reach their focus. I don't know how the monsters sense their enemies across a dungeon, but in my party's case, I suppose they can hear all the looted coins in the Scoundrel's pockets that he prevents the rest of the party from getting to first.

    True, but not really the point. The Living Bones is just used as "generic melee monster X" here, since that's the same monster the rulebook used for examples. (Or, just pretend it drew its "target one enemy with all attacks" card)

    I put the stats that were relevant in the corner, and I hadn't given the living bones Target 2 at that section of the video yet, or addressed multiple targets, so the operating assumption is Target 1 for instructional purposes until specified otherwise. I was simply trying to set a basic foundation and then build upon it, and was not particular about what monster I had out there, he was just there to represent a monster. If it helps, I forgot to mention in that example that the Living Bones ability card I drew for that round must have been "Target one enemy with all attacks."

    Will a monster with ranged multi target attack ever move into a position to maximize attack on all targets, if that location gives it disadvantage? e.g. If Archer had Target 3 and the Tinkerer was one space further away (right and down from space at kzread.info/dash/bejne/aY5qwZeBhaeYn7g.html), would the archer move next to the Brute to target all three players at disadvantage?
