Global TV Chopper 1 - Vancouver's Traffic Helicopter
I went to Boundary Bay Airport to meet with Amber, Suzy and Trish who go up in Global 1, the traffic chopper and do the traffic reports for all of Vancouver. They gave me full, behind-the-scenes access to the helicopter, a Robinson 44, to the hangar and to their fantastic insight on traffic in Vancouver, how they give the traffic reports and breaking news.

I used to work for a helicopter maintenance company out of boundary bay airport. They had multiple hangars, one of the storage hangars was just down from the traffic network hangar and I'd walk by it all the time and see the global news chopper and news 1130 Cessna. But our main hangar was right behind that airports only heli-pads. We watched the global news chopper pilot taking out that R44 every single morning, and all the news reporter ladies come out and jump in the helicopter right before our morning meeting

Somewhere in the United States, an MSNBC news helicopter lost control and crashed on the roof of an apartment building. The reporter who was on board stuck his hand out of the wreckage showing that he survived and so did the pilot!

Huh, didn't know traffic chopper was still a thing? I watch the news every morning and sure we have news choppers that report on stories every so oftern, but never seen anyone reporting on traffic from a cockpit,...they just show pictures from cameras that are mounted all over the roads. Too bad, seems like a decent job. 😗
