Global No.1 Howitzer: Here's Why So Many Countries Want K9 Thunder
The K9 Thunder is a South Korean 155 mm tracked self-propelled howitzer designed and developed by the Agency for Defense Development and Samsung Aerospace Industries for the Republic of Korea Armed Forces and is now manufactured by Hanwha Defense.
The design of the South Korean self-propelled howitzer lasted for a period of nine years: 1989 - 1998. The first version of the K9 Thunder entered combat service and duty in the Republic of South Korea in 1999. 19 years later, in 2018, the Republic of South Korea upgraded its self-propelled howitzer to the K9A1 Thunder level and the same year began replacing the existing K9 Thunder.
Today, the K9 Thunder is one of South Korea’s most popular artillery weapon systems available for trade-in international markets. There are already 9 countries using this artillery service, the latest announced new contracts are from Australia and Egypt. In the future, the UK may also want to replace the UK AS90 with the K9A2 variant.

    1. K9A1 currently uses BB rounds (base bleed) and has 54km range. 2. Howitzers differ from normal artillery due to its mobility. 3. K9A2 is designed to outperform PhZ2000 on sustained firing rate. The bust TOT is 5 rounds, rapid rate is 10 rounds per minute and sustained rate of 6 rounds per minute. One technical difference is PhZ 2000 used the least amount of charge (1 cartridge) when recording these. K9 uses 3 charges. 4. PhZ has not been upgraded significantly in past 30 years. K9 has been modified to customise for each country + A1, A2. 5. The rounds used has not been invested heavily by Germans due to decimated German army. Korea has invested over $3bn per year for development and management. eg when an existing round reaches 10th year post production, the round is disassembled and refurbished with latest tech. 6. K9A1 and A2 uses recon rounds (a round which has camera), GGBL (guided glider round with range 82-150km) etc. precision munitions are already being adopted in Korea but not announced as ADD (gov) has the full rights. Unlike some others, they do not boast about every new development as the country is technically still at war. 7. K9 has direct fire mode and demonstrated anti-ship capabilities. ie Egyptian Navy is the lead on Egyptian purchase not Army. Aussie also tested it against vessels and got 100% on target in their own testing. 8. K10 is autofeeder vehicle with 104 rounds in them. K10 can load K9 in 5 mins without anyone ever leaving their vehicles. K10 has the same chassis and if needed, it can replace any damaged K9 chassis. 2 full sets of K9A1 + K10 is cheaper than 1 PzH2000. 9. Koreans are a lot more flexible to tech transfer, local production and future development cooperation. If you get PhZ, Caesar, Archer, M109A6 or any other platforms, the user has minimum field maintenance access. Any heavy maintenance or repairs must be carried out by the producer. Even German army had less than 50% combat readiness for PhZ2000 as the parts were delayed and the repair approval from the producer was taking more than 1 year in some cases. 10. India acquired a 100 K9. This was the only military procurement contract in Indian history where the product was delivered in time. 10 was made in Korea and 90 were manufactured with a local partner in India. Norway’s K9 was delivered early due to avoid any delays due to pandemic lockdowns. Korean have proven to be punctual and reliable. All technicalities aside, at war you need a system which is cheap, ready, easy to use and capable. K9 is even cheaper than most wheeled peers. Operational readiness of Korean army is ca 90%. It takes 4-6 weeks for emergency training and 12 weeks for full training for conscripts. It has the best firing range and competitive firing rate vs all other systems. That’s why so many countries with external threat buys K9.

OK ---- The Polish Krab is the Best Artillery Guns in the World at This time in Ukraine... Better than the American M-109 and M-777 in Range by a good 6 miles with its longer barrel... The French Caesar is a close Second With its deployment road speed but lacks the tracks, crew protection and the number of rounds carried by the Krab... Most importantly Poland is supplying Ukraine (through gifts and Purchases) with enough of the Krabs to Make a Difference in the WAR!!! With each French Caesar sent greatly helping... While the American 155mm, M-777s with 39cal length barrels can outrange the thousands of the Russian Artillery guns that fire 122mm shells and is more accurate than the Russian guns, are a sick embarrassing attempt for the Numbers Ukraine Desperately needs with only 100 sent... Not to mention the little problem, that the M-777 along with its Brother M-109 simply does not have the gun range to stay out of the counter-battery range of the growing numbers, of Long-range Russian MSTA-S 152mm, 47cal barreled Counter battery guns in Ukraine... That is resulting in a growing number of M-777s being destroyed (close to 1/3rd of the M-777s sent to Ukraine have been LOST to Russian Counter Battery Fire simply because of its Short 39cal barrel) by growing numbers of Russian 152mm long-range guns... While the Krab and other Western 155mm 52cal guns do have the range to be safe from the Russian 152mm guns... K1 ------ But the American M-777s and M-109s can be upgraded with a 52cal barrel length upgrade kit that will give them the same range as the Krab and other 155mm 52cal guns... Helping towards giving Ukraine the 1,000 Western Long Range Guns it Desperately needs while saving the few M-777s Ukraine has left.. The Manufacturer of the M-777 developed and tested a long 52cal barrel for the M-777 for the Export Market a Decade ago. That can be built and installed in both the M-777 and the American-built M-109s as an Upgrade kit. All Artillery guns wear out their barrels after a few thousand rounds are fired and must be replaced...
