Global National: May 1, 2024 | Loblaw boycott begins - will Canada's biggest grocer feel the pinch?

The campaign to boycott Loblaw stores has officially kicked off, but will Canadians stop shopping at the grocery giant's various banners - including the Real Canadian Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart, No Frills, T&T, Zehrs, Provigo, and Dominion? Anne Gaviola explains what's prompted the boycott and whether it will have a meaningful impact.
After much controversy, years of delays, and being billions of dollars overbudget, oil is finally flowing through the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Heather Yourex-West explains what Canadians are getting from the investment and whether it can be enough to silence critics who question the pipeline's profitability.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and the rest of his caucus have returned to the House of Commons, after Poilievre was ejected for refusing to retract a statement calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a "wacko." David Akin looks at how the first Question Period since that ejection was way more civil and why the tranquility likely won't last.
Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters have been arrested at college and university campuses across the U.S., with the majority of those demonstrations asking for their schools to divest from Israel in some form. Jackson Proskow reports on the disruptions at Columbia University, University of Wisconsin-Madison and UCLA.
The federal government is moving ahead with changes to Canada's asylum claim system, which could speed up the country's deportation process. Mackenzie Gray explains what some of those changes are and the reaction.
Plus, it has been 28 years since some of the cast and crew who worked on the blockbuster film 'Titanic' in Nova Scotia got mysteriously high after eating seafood chowder. It's one of the entertainment world's biggest mysteries. Heidi Petracek explains the new information Halifax police have revealed and the lingering question of who spiked the soup.

Loblaws made record profits and gouged customers while inflation was also hurting the same customers. There is no reason they should be making record profits during inflationary times. There is no excuse and they should stop the greedflation on top of inflation.

Loblaws made over 4 Billion in profit (not revenue) in 2023. If they reduced prices by 25% they still could have made 3 BILLION. Pure greed. If you want a CEO who cares nothing for the well-being of Canadians but is focused purely on making as much money as possible, import a CEO from Europe like Loblaws did.

Other Canadian government will be the same or most likely even worse. *Current problems are not with government, these problems are WITH THE SYSTEM.* Is it Trudeau's fault that US new passenger vehicle sales *👉FELL 2.63 TIMES(!!!)👈* from 2015 to 2022? *This is the pure indicator of the impoverishment of the population.* 2015 year - 7,516,826 cars, 2022 year - 2,858,575 cars. Can you try to remember what exactly started in 2014 and 2015? Is it Trudeau's fault that in UK ... now the direct quote from a British daily newspaper The Guardian _"Data released by the government showed that Britons ate less meat at home in the year to March 2022 than at any point since 1974, with the average person eating 854g (1.88lbs) a week"?_ Is it Trudeau’s fault that real (by purchasing power) GDP in Germany in 2023 is not growing, but actually is *DOWN 0.3%* compared to 2022? As a senior citizen, I'm finding it difficult to manage my expenses. I have to spend $200 for just two weeks' worth of staples, without any meat or other items. Even though I have loyalty points, the prices at the store I shop at are very high. The cost of a can of pork and beans alone is almost $4, which is quite unreasonable. As a result, I have decided to shop elsewhere. The produce they sell is either rotten or so underripe that it never matures. I hope people realize what's going on and stop shopping there. I live in a rural area where the prices are already high and they're only getting worse, making it even more unsustainable for people like me.

Loblaws profits are derived from whom they sell to, with a 10% increase in an already significant profit margin. It's costing farmers more to produce and those costs do get forwarded. There is something seriously wrong if the end provider can get away with gouging it's customers. It's not about "some disgruntled customers", we all eat food, kind of hard not to. Problem is the generation that's running now, no one actually does their job, bare minimum, skim by.

Having a organized boycott can help speed things up but we can still do it on our own. I've been boycotting Sobeys (they are even worse than Loblaw) by myself for a year now and did most of my grocery shopping at local meat and veggie markets as well as dollar store. Now I'm so used to it, adding Loblaw to my boycott list doesn't affect me at all, plus I've also saved up so much by shop locally (they are typically 20%-50% cheaper than those greedy grocery chains). We could all do it, it's not hard. At first it may sound like a big change, but once you make the change and make it your everyday life, you can continue it months after months without feeling any inconvenience. 👍 Also trust me, if we really want to make this boycott work, we need much more than one month.

I took a look at some comparing retail monthly numbers between the U.S and Canada. As far as what i can deduce is , that’s Canada’s retail sector sales numbers are approximately 10% of that of the U.S economy. Meaning, whichever numbers economist try to paint in whatever terms domestically, we know or should know or realise, are minuscule in comparison to the U.S monthly retail sales powerhouse. That is the reality. Competition and spurring competition is not, and has not been a priority, no matter who has been in power at the Federal level. Any non Canadian retailer that sets up shop here, soon leaves because the money just isn’t here. Sad but true. If Canada was truly interested in driving down prices, then a lot of changes would have to be made at the Federal level to allow for such. Have you heard this as a priority by any leader ? Renewable energy is growing, but so is global demand for energy - faster than the growth in renewables. Renewable energy itself is new and flawed. For example, we are just starting to see the downside of EVs - from lithium mine eco-disasters to failing Salmon runs. Canada’s carbon-tax began in 2007 when Alberta's majority PC gov't created a carbon levy. In 2008 the Harper gov't (including Poilievre) called carbon trading a “key part” of their emissions plan and campaigned on a cap and trade system. But now in campaign mode, they want you to forget that this was their idea so they can blame Trudeau. Non-partisan economists agree that the carbon rebate is the most cost effective solution to reducing emissions and address climate change, and just one tool of many that need to be deployed. JT has asked for alternative solutions. The Cons say "Sell more LNG, it's Common Sense." But that's insane! The world has to get off fossil fuels now. Big Oil has been stalling reduction and pushing growth for 50 years, but the weaning period is over. How much will groceries cost after mega-drought arrives and everything cooks under heat-domes? How much will housing cost when the houses burn down from uncontrollable wildfires and are flooded and flattened by monster hurricanes? Can't you see that worrying about pennies today (3 cents/L) will not take care of the dollars of tomorrow (our very existence)?

It's a very low margins business. The profits are made in volume. A small grocer with little floor space and limited hours of operation couldn't possibly earn a profit unless they charged a premium price. The boutique grocer would cost you far more money. We as consumers made price king. We're in part responsible for bland stores, low grocery store worker wages by insisting on the lowest price possible. Sad to say that the prices were artificially low for many reasons. Now we have had supply chain shocks, increased wages for seasonal workers (good) a push for an end to child labour in chocolate and other areas (good) and a war between Ukraine and Russia (not good) who produced much of the world's grain products. By all means let's whine about a monopoly that doesn't really exist. I'm perfectly fine with having a conversation about the hyper attention of shareholder value, executive compensation, corporate taxes and share buy back programs. I'm open to a conversation regarding gig workers who deliver the orders for the different apps. But we have to be serious.
