Global Journalist: Guyana threatened by 'oil curse'

One of the poorest nations in the Western hemisphere is about to be transformed. That's because tiny Guyana is the site of one of the largest offshore oil discoveries in decades.
But as the South American nation readies for a gusher of oil cash, there are concerns the relatively peaceful and democratic nation could be changed for the worse.
Joining the program:
*Samuel Sukhnandan, senior journalist for the Guyana Times and Television Guyana.
*Raul Gallegos, associate director for consulting firm Control Risks.
*Anthony Bryan, professor at the Institute of International Relations at the University of the West Indies.
*Nick Butler, former BP plc oil executive and visiting professor at King's College London.

In This Clips while Raul Galleegos talks about Poverty... It's incorrect to Use People sitting on the seawalls to associate as a pictorial guide to back his Statement... Samuel should well inform GJ that Guyanese people has been celebrating on various occasions sitting on the seawalls over a number of years... Guyanese Folks don't have poverty compared to other parts of the world... If he (RG) wants to make his point about countries not being ready for new found resources... should get his facts together before making such blunt statements Journalist are like watch Dogs (In Some cases Angels) and should be mindful of credibility of their information sources... you don't want to be responsible for putting your name on a story that may cause harm ... that for the goodness that it should served... what is the real purpose of this Clip...

The Arab Gulf countries are all doing and they were poorer, so why do you think that Guyana will face trouble? As far as I can tell, the government has been planning to circumvent any issues, and is doing a good job at it. They have already done their research on possible mishaps from other countries, and have employed experts.

Norway has a taxation of the oil companies that is close to 78 % of the profit !!!!! This tax system has been developed over a period from 1970 - 2019. The tax system is well functioning and the oil companies loves to search for and extract oil in our country. I can only ask and recommend the leadership of Guyana to actively use the Norwegian experiences to its full extent. The norwegians will be happy to share information and, if needed contribute to negotiations. Then Guyana can expect zero corruption factor.

Guyana should sell their oil on there terms and not anyone terms, Guyana can used this resource to build a better country for its people, Guyanese people are nice people especially the the Essequibo people, I will like to see someone in power who think and speaks from there heart where honesty and love for the Guyanese people comes first. Take the money and build homes, school , business, hospitals, and better the country in general. Bare in mind we all have to died we don’t take anything with us . And the best things we can give to the future of Guyana is what we preserved and build for tomorrow generations. I am from Guyana 🇬🇾 and I will like to see the people of Guyana come first. Also Guyana should not allow outsider government to step into Guyana to any business, or else we will end up like Syria, outside government become ur friend and then ur enemy and wipe out the history of Guyana and the Guyanese people .. with this in mind know that these outsider is only looking out for their benefits not the Guyanese people benefits . Plz Guyanese people put ur thinking cap on and stand firm We do not want to see the country fall into a trap and hostage environment from outsider. Do ur work ur self and sell ur products with u being in control.

Guyana also has a boarder dispute with Suriname at the east south boarder. Not the Coroniriver is de border in the south between these two countries, but the Upper Corantineriver that the Guyanese people call New river is the boarder between these two countries. The whole part of land between Upper Corantineriver and Coroniriver is Suriname soil, it belongs to Suriname and not Guyana. Keep that in mind.
