Glide your way to VICTORY with Glider Vectoring!

Why do so many high level time trials in Mario Kart 8 deluxe drift off of gliders instead of tricking? In this video, I explain why tricking off gliders is so much slower, and also how to easily replicate the pro strats online!

    One thing I didn’t mention, glider vectoring and motion glider should really only be done on 150cc, and you should be trying do it on every course with a glider except for shy guy falls, thwomp ruins, grumble volcano, and ribbon road Sometimes you'll notice in high level time trials that after the vectoring, they pull up a bit before landing back on the track (you can see this in some of the examples in the video). Going back up like this for just a bit is apparently faster, but no one really knows why... so yeah... dip down and then dip back up a bit

    I guess the point isn't so much that you can't do it on TR and dRiR as much as it is that I wouldn't suggest going for it on those courses cause they're much more difficult to do correctly

    Something else to note is that pressing the drift/trick button right after releasing your mini-turbo off of a glider gives you a low glider, which is generally good when going for vectoring or mg since it allows you to almost immediately initiate the upwards diagonal movement that saves time. It's really easy and very powerful! Great vid! I've kind of just accepted glider vectoring for so long that I've stopped trying to understand it, so hearing the potential explanation you offered was very cool.

    A good example of the horizontal and vertical speed caps can be seen in Goldeneye 007.Every single speedrunner walks diagonally because diagonal movement is nor capped per se, but rather the horizontal and vertical components of movement

  • @Bayesic

    200cc gliders you're mostly just tricking off of them. The one exception is if you're able to build up an ultra mini turbo before the glider, it's faster to just drive straight off the glider instead of tricking. This is cause the glider sets your speed to some fixed value before giving you the trick boost. You can see an example of that in the current Electrodrome 200cc world record that I've linked to below. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ipdnlqWwn5jZZNY.html

    @@Bayesic I was looking into this myself and from what I've found there are basically 3 options for capturing inputs on switch: 1: open joystick + a system module installed on a hacked switch - this one you evidently can't do 2: any man-in-the-middle for a wired controller (even a wired pro controller) - this one seems feasible, until you realize that usb protocols are fairly hard to tap, and most solutions are basically homebrew on $80+ microcontrollers inbetween the controller and the console, making them both potentially more awkward and more expensive than the next option: 3: use a dualshock 4 lmao - it turns out playstation controllers (and afaik, ONLY playstation controllers) can connect to bluetooth and usb simultaneously and separately, allowing it to, for example, connect to a $20 bluetooth usb stick plugged into the switch's dock, and also be plugged in to your computer via usb, giving inputs to both at the same time why do only playstation controllers stack the connections like this? no clue. other controllers will only output to one device or the other. Conveniently, the dualshock 4 and dualsense both also have gyros, making them functionally identical to the switch pro controller... plus a frame or two of motion input lag from having to be registered as a wired controller. Why Nintendo hasn't solved motion input being slower when wired after 5 years I really couldn't say, but for mario kart it shouldn't be particularly relevant given it's only used to hold an angle for motion glider (it's relevant to me b/c it's just on the edge of noticeable while playing splatoon). You definitely can do glider strats without motion, and that’s usually what I’m doing. Motion is just slightly faster. And you can play with motion on the whole time so you don’t have to pause but motion tends to be a lot less precise than joystick so it’ll be slower over the course of a whole race That’s why people tend to pause and only turn them on for the glider

    Any reason why I lose altitude when I activate motion controls? I'm trialing Mario Kart Stadium and whenever I unpause the menu after activating motion controls, my kart sometimes loses height. I use the + button to pause and unpause and I hold on to the A button the entire time as well as holding my left stick down to the bottom left. It doesn't happen all the time, but I had a best split on Lap 1 and when I got to the Lap 3 glider, it just lost altitude for me. Now I'm on this video because I'm mad lmao.

I'm starting to get that problem again and I can't improve my time anymore since my motion glider is so inconsistent. When I'm about to pause, I wait for the wheel changing animation to fully complete. I was thinking that was what you meant by your glider being fully out and it was working. Now I'm trialing again and that method isn't consistent anymore. I honestly don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

    @@BRVTXL Hmmm... so the best way I can explain it is the way I do motion glider is by drifting off the ramp and just holding the drift until my mini turbo comes out If you pause before the mini turbo comes out, then you'll lose all your speed. Other than that without seeing a clip or replay I'm not sure what else could be going wrong since that was the main thing that was screwing up my own motion gliders

    tell me youre a nerd without telling me youre a nerd (but its worth pointing out): you’re saying your speed increases but that is your diagonal speed and not your actual forward speed. the diagonal speed increases as a result of you covering more (the diagonal) distance in the same time, only that distance is not parallel to the forward component (the only relevant) of your speed, so in theory you’re even slower. see it as a top-down view of 2 people on a flat plane on (0,0). at t0 they both start running towards an infinitely long finishline, 200m down the line at (x,200) (x doesnt matter as the line is infinite) p1 runs in a straight path (parallel to the y-axis) towards the finish line and reaches it in 10s. since he ran at a straight path his speed only has 1 component (vertical, y-axis). p2 runs towards the finishline with the exact same speed as p1, only at a slight angle, therefore his speed gets a second component (horizontal, x-axis). p2 reaches the finishline at say (40,200). even though the speed of both p1 and p2 is identical, p1 will reach the finishline first, because his speed consists of 1 componen, straight towards the finishline: all of his speed is distributed in one direction, the direction that matters. p2 runs with the same speed, but because of the angle, part of his speed will get distributed over a horizontal component as well; therefore he has to lose some speed in the vertical (y axis) component, resulting in a lower speed in the direction that matters and thus reaching the line later than p1. im curious to what you guys think is the explanation of the visible higher velocity with keeping in mind what i just explained thanks for reading! looking forward to some responses

  • @Bayesic

    @Bayesic

    Yeah so the assumption you’re making is that P1 and P2 are moving at the same speed The whole reason glider vectoring works is because P2 is actually moving faster than P1 because of the fact that movement in the X and Y axes are individually capped but movement in diagonal directions is NOT capped

    Motion gliding should be illegal. I'm not trying to spread negativity, but it has a few issues for me. First, it requires pausing. In most games in a competitive setting, that would result in some kind of penalty. While pausing a race online doesn't pause the game, it can still be a little inconvenient. Pausing during time trials, or any mode that is just on one console, like Grand Prix and local multiplayer, though does actually pause the game, so I feel like times that use this strat are encumbered because of this. You shouldn't pause a game just to gain an advantage. Another issue I have with motion gliding is not every controller has motion controls. Only the Switch Pro Controller, Joy Cons, and some wireless third party controllers do. Players should not be punished because they use a controller that doesn't have motion controls. The Game Cube controller, one of the most used controllers for competitive play, especially for Smash, is almost not even viable, and some of them can cost as much as a Switch. If I'm paying around $200 for a controller, it better be one of the best for the game I enjoy playing.

  • @Bayesic

    I mostly agree about pausing mid run being very unsatisfying and kind of being against the point of this game But not really sure I buy into the argument that it’s an issue because not all controllers have motion controls, especially when like you said, the controllers that come with the console have motion controls, so everyone technically has access to it out of the box

    @@Bayesic The Wii was almost built around motion controls, yet in Mario Kart Wii, for the motionless controllers, the Classic Controller and Game Cube, the developers found a way to incorporate the motion aspect by mapping them to the d pad. Objectively, there is no difference between motion controllers and ones without in Mario Kart Wii with the exception of how the inputs are executed. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there is no button mapping for the motion controls in this instance. Maybe this is an oversight on Nintendo's part on why it's even in the game in the first place. I don't know, but if Nintendo didn't want their players to use other controllers, they would only have just the joy cons or Wii Remote playable in Mario Kart.
