Glenn Ford in HEAVEN WITH A BARBED WIRE FENCE (Full Movie) Richard Conte, Jean Rogers, Ward Bond!

Фильм және анимация

HEAVEN WITH A BARBED WIRE FENCE is Glenn Ford’s very first starring movie. It’s from 1939 and Glenn had only appeared on film in one musical short subject two years before. He wasn’t acting in that, merely the host, introducing music acts. In this feature film, 23-year-old Glenn is the star, the male lead. But because no one had ever heard of him, he is forth billed behind Jean Rogers, Raymond Walburn and Marjorie Rambeau! HEAVEN WITH A BARBED WIRE FENCE was directed by actor Ricardo Cortez and was written by Dalton Trumbo (SPARTACUS, LONELY ARE THE BRAVE). It boasts a terrific, villainous performance by Ward Bond and is a surprisingly charming road movie with Glenn meeting an interesting array of folks during his trek. In the movie, Glenn is a New York salesclerk who has saved enough money to buy a little piece of heaven, some land in Arizona, sight unseen. It took all of his money for the purchase, so, with no car or cash, he decides to hitchhike. Also making his film debut in HEAVEN WITH A BARBED WIRE FENCE is actor Richard Conte who had been discovered as a singing waiter in NY by Elia Kazan and John Garfield. Conte is very good in the movie and creates a solid characterization. After this movie was finished, Conte was signed to a long-term contract at 20th Century Fox. Glenn Ford…was not signed but soon landed at Columbia Pictures and become one of the most popular actors in the world. Could you see in Glenn a star in the making? Rob, that was a very entertaining hour my wife and I spent watching this delightful movie. All the actors gave wonderful performances. It's hard to believe it's been 85 years. My, how our can-do spirit has changed. I look forward to its return someday. Until then, I'll enjoy past classics and forgotten gems such as this one.

Ford could do it all. young in '39 or old. cop, military, cowboy, drama, humor. Cowboy is a fav of mine. and this is a very oddly sweet movie and Jean Rogers is magic. lost in time now. glad she went on to play Dale Arden in the Flash Gordon serials!

Glen Ford did a wonderful job. I so hate that when actors like FORD, get older, they always get the villain part. Your Nutcracker collection rivals my 2 sister's collections. For years I bought them each different ones as I could find them. Thanks for another fun film to eat popcorn and enjoy .

Hey Rob- Thanks for posting this ! Wow - Glenn Ford’s and Richard Conte’s first movie. Amazing ! A little bit “Sullivan’s Travels,” a little bit “Wild Boys of the Road,” and a little bit “Emperor of the North.” In answer to your question, and with all due respect to Glenn Ford, I’d say Richard Conte shows the greatest potential here. IMHO, Conte was great in just about everything he did, from this .. to playing his final major role as Barzini in “The Godfather.” Just finished watching Conte (along with Susan Hayward) in Joe Mankiewicz’s “House of Strangers” (1949), which I had never seen before. Brilliant! I loved Glenn in “Gilda,” which of course made Rita Hayworth the superstar she became, noirs like "The Big Heat," and westerns like “3:10 to Yuma;” but if I had to choose between him and Conte in this picture, it would have to be Conte. Love this stuff and AWOW- please let’s have more !

It was likely figured that Dale Arden was the only one movie goers would recognize among a cast of newcomers in this little second feature anyway. Hence the billing. Or maybe they were going by seniority. Saw this film on late-night telly when I was a kid and was impressed with how hobo Conte made soup out of a cup of hot water. I of course as a kid who was used to putting ketchup on everything anyway, had tuh try it myself, and as I recall thought it wasn't half bad.

FORD & CONTE, unknown young guys who were totally unaware of what fame and fortune awaited them... the HOLLYWOOD talent scouts picked some winners here for sure, they had personality and charisma bigtime. Of course writer Dalton Trumbo would go on to bigger, better and some very bad times in his career... as for wannabee Valentino actor turned director Ricardo Cortez, his HOLLYWOOD career wasn't making him rich but his later job on Wall Street did! Good little movie loaded-up with great veteran character actors who saved many a picture and helped along many stars in the making...

Fascinating provenance. The roads of John Garfield, Dalton Tremblay, John Garfield, Elia Khazan, Glen Ford and Richard Conte all crisscrossed. Khazan snitched during HUAC. Garfield suffered as a result of HUAC and tragically died young. Dalton was blacklisted for years. Ford played in the A lackluster movies the fifties were known for. Conte was a gritty B film noire actor in the fifties. His acting style was always the same, never changed.

This 60 min film is a good example of simple story telling - a skill lost since the Twilight Zone writers of the 1960s, I imagine. The writing in this movie was not sophisticated and the ending was clumsy but overall it was a nice hour. Better than 3 hours of space aliens, dragons and nonstop superman fighting. I always like Ford but in this movie Conte gave a smoother performance. Ford's character was stiff or lacked diminsion. Can't tell if it was his acting or the script. Probably both.

Realizing what a turkey they had with this B-movie, 20th Century Fox tagged it with a title so long ("Heaven With A Barbed Wire Fence") that it could barely fit on a movie marquee. Glenn Ford's voice in this movie is high pitched, almost squeaky, and his role is written as lame and annoying. Jean Rogers is a bright spot in another wise drab movie that goes nowhere. Richard (Nicholas) Conte plays Richard Conte, a tough and cynical customer. After being cleaned out by Conte in a card game among Hollywood "friends," movie producer Mike Todd complained about Conte sandbagging him, being a card pro. Fox studio head Darryl Zanuck must have hated Ford to dump him right after the movie's filming during June and July of 1939. Zanuck did not wait for the movie's release in the then dead period of Christmas week 1939 to boot Ford. As an actor, Ford was better in his later movies. He couldn't be worse.
