Penn actually makes Glenn tolerable to listen to. I think Penn just has an effect of bringing people down to earth. He gets along with everyone and always has good conversations. Beck seemed like pretty much a normal person. Am I in the Twilight Zone?

It amazes me how loud Penn is on stage or on P&T: Bullshit, yet when he's having a conversation or a debate he's so calm and collected.

It's really refreshing to see an actual discussion instead of just one more shouting match. I like these guys and they've given me a lot to think about.

I love the idea of "Why is the government involved in our love?"

The big problem we have, is that yes, it would be good for everyone to be a libertarian. But; in order for that to work, we need an educated population. And we don't have that; we have an educational system that teaches us how to be good employees, good followers of the status quo, and ignorant of the true workings of government and management. Our population is dumb. And intentionally kept that way.

As an active Christian. I agree with Penn 100% with the Nativity scene on Public property.

Glenn, my apologies. I allowed myself to become biased against you without really giving you a shot. If what you say here is true, then, even if I do not agree with you one some things, you still have my respect.

I totally agree with this. I am an atheist and that hasn't changed. But now I sincerely hope that myself and other humans of faith can come together to try to understand each other. I truly believe that we all want what is best; not just for ourselves and not just for our families, but the best for everyone. I am going to do my best to continue talks with friends and family of all beliefs to try to come to a genuine understanding. Truth be told I love and care for them deeply no matter our differences. Thank you.

I really love the line " they believe rights are more than you could do alone on an island." That is brilliant.

Penn is great: talks to people in their language in a way that's respectful to them and also true to his own principles. Good example to atheists like me, and maybe even some religious people will find him so as well.

I haven't been a super big fan of Glenn Beck in the past, however, this conversation was brilliant! This was one of the most well thought out, non-agressive conversations I have seen on such hot topics. This made my respect for both Glenn Beck and Penn Jillette go up tremendously. They both expressed what I have been saying for years- that we need to have civil conversations with people that disagree with us and strive for the one thing that we all have in common- our want for freedom.

Penn is a nice man and he is naive as he is nice is my opinion, I agree with Penn on everything he said, Glenn exploits Penn, because Glenn knows the second his right wing kind, like "The American Family Council, Tea Party and 700 club type" gets a chance with everyone being fair, they'll grab the power, and I'm no chump nor naive enough to not know it their bullies and tyrannical by nature.

DJ7223 I thought I said one of my reasons, at one point I was almost listening daily, then while I and my husband was having lunch together one day, he spouts out and I quote "Columbus was a divine man of destiny" Now if one is a decent human and has any knowledge on this sub-human less then insect of a thing parading as a man, then they know how offensive that thought is to any natural non criminally insane non Manson clan type of person. He is either absolutely ignorant and should have read up before exclaiming such, or guilty of the fore-mentioned qualities and either way, he lost me there, I turned the station in angry disgust and never listened again. When a person says a monster is even good, you have but two choices, their thoughtless did not take the time to know what their saying, which is stupidity and should cost them their credibility, or their a liar and really inwardly a total heartless monster themselves, either way the same penalty should naturally follow. Because the left side of the board is anarchy while the right side of the board is totalitarianism. And that is why the right is on the left side of the line graph. I believe he made anarchy on the left side to show that anarchy is the most primal level of government while totalitarianism is directly opposite.

Here is a mind twister. I'm atheist. I also think the concept of church is a good thing. I see church as a time to take a break from the worries of the everyday. Come together with your neighbors and friends. Share in the community. I do have a problem with the organization of "the church" that isn't in the building in our community. What is beyond the local building. How many millions and maybe (man's records only go back so far) billions of people have died due to a conflict of belief's? This I do not want to participate in. Do I want to convert any one to atheism? NO. I feel atheism is a state of mind that has to be come to by the individual. I have no desire to change your mind, your way. haha, i agree, like the second amendment, i doubt people who wrote the constitution who were no doubt great men envisioned the right to bear arms would be semi/automatic weapons killing innocent school kids or innocent people at the mall/cinema, ( yes yes people kill people not guns which is exactly the point, most people are capable of killing if in the right situation not to mention the crazies) and the argument that the government will take over the people so you need to be armed might have made sense when the government and citizens had guns that you had to jam gun powder down the barrel and put in your lead pellet. Point 1. is if the government wanted to go after the U.S citizens i doubt an automatic machine gun would hurt an F18. Point 2 is thinking the Government is going to start a war with the citizens means that the armed forces that America hold in such high esteem would have to turn against their own countrymen, i doubt it, i am not from America and i would be scared to be out and about in America and never knowing if some crazy is going to shoot you, which is the whole argument to be armed, so it seems like a crazy ride no one wants to get off. America make's and produce's some of the worlds greatest stuff but the other end of the spectrum is they have some of the craziest, how many years has the show cops been going, never run out of queer shit to film in America.

I never said anything about the purpose of the constitution. I just made an observation about the zealous, almost creepy way, in which people - even supposed skeptics - praise it in an almost worshipful way. It's just a specific document written for a specific country, but the way even Penn talks about it here makes me feel like I should feel inferior for not living in the glorious USA with their sublime constitution. I think I do understand the constitution - just whenever most Americans open their mouths to say two words about it, they sound like they are the ones who don't.

The men who wrote the Constitution wanted to draw hard lines around the powers of government to ensure that the government did not abuse its citizens. They knew that the Constitution would become outdated over time, that problems would arise that might necessitate the amending of the constitution, so they wanted to make sure the constitution contained a mechanism whereby it could be amended to reflect the changing needs of the American people, while maintaining the integrity of the controls it placed on government, and so they made the process politically difficult. Over the years, politicians have found the amending process burdensome and so they have found clever ways to bypass it, to grow their power outside of the confines of the constitution using very creative legal arguments that were obviously not intended by the framers or by just ignoring it altogether. If a politicians don't like something about the Constitution, they are welcome to fight to amend it, but they shouldn't be able to ignore it, or cherry pick and torture a clause or two out of it and come to the conclusion that they can do anything. The Constitution is very important to me, not because it is divine, but because it is supposed to be a contract with my government. It is supposed to protect me against tyranny and abuse. Why wouldn't I revere it?

Libertarianism has one really big glaring flaw. It assumes you can trust people to do the right thing and not screw each other over at every given opportunity.

Brendan Beckett That doesn't just apply to businesses. It also applies to everyday life. The vast majority of people cannot be trusted to think ahead, or even to really consider what they really want out of life. Most are too stupid, too ignorant, too short-sighted and/or too hedonistic to be trusted with any responsibility over themselves or others. Not that I trust government either, because it's run by people. Which is really the crux of the thing. Most people need to be controlled because they aren't capable of controlling themselves, but there is no known form of control that keeps the people in power properly in check, nor allows freedom to those who can use it wisely while keeping the rest in check. There is no easy answer, but libertarianism is just plain naive.

You can be sure that people in government do not always do the right thing and that you are lied to routinely by your government. Markets are only a mechanism that are shared by virtually all economic systems. It is capitalism that advocates free markets and free markets are not necessarily natural so they must be maintained. The Soproanos are not allowed to exist in a free market system. A mechanism must be in place to remove the Soproanos when they are detected. Most people don't understand the basic definition of a free market due to profound propaganda.

Tanner Stage V Free markets and capitalism, and the various pittalls of them, are just an example. That isn't really the point of what's wrong with libertarianism. It uses government as a scapegoat. Forgetting an important key aspect of government. They are all worked by people. Therefor a government is no more or less trustworthy than the people it represents. Or as George Carlin put it in his old routine about politicians. Paraphrasing... "They don't just pass into our reality through some membrane. They come from American homes and American schools. Garbage in... garbage out. If you have greedy, self absorbed citizens, you get greedy, self absorbed politicians." Government is a reflection of the people it represents. Any problems libertarians think only exist in government, exist at all levels of society. You wont fix them in one, till you've gotten into the rotten core and dug out the infection from where it started, the public. Acting like the government is some nebulous, far away thing that has nothing to do with the common populace is naive, and rather dangerous in some ways. I don't entirely disagree with libertarians, but their notion that downsizing government is some sort of magic fix for society is just as big a load of BS as anything Penn and Teller ever investigated. We don't need less government, we need more. But far and way away beyond that, what we need more than anything is better people to run it, and that only happens when we have better people to start with.

Perhaps Jillette is being used by Beck. Beck needs props to make is brand of crazy seem more acceptable. Penn thinks Beck is a harmless nut, but Glenn is dangerous because he spreads fear, superstition and he's also a science denier. Jillette needs to realize that when he appears with Beck, he helps promote Beck's anti-science, superstitious agenda. And recently Jillette has promoted Beck's campaign to pressure cable companies to add BlazeTV to their line up, a production that promotes falsehoods, superstition, Creationism and all the other nonsense based on religious scripture instead of proven science.

Iv always loved Penn and he has shaped my views and educated me in so many ways. On the other hand I have often dismissed Glenn up until now. I now respect the man so much and hold that this is the real conversation for America to have.

No matter how much I dislike Glenn's stances on a LOT of issues, I do like that he does his best to bring in people with differing opinions AND he lets them talk. Sometimes he gets his feelings hurt, but he doesn't do what a lot of people on BOTH sides of the media do and try and drown out opinions he doesn't agree with.

They do not want small Government, they want influence of corporations on Government, which is a good thing in and itself. But these morons still want the government to socially engineer the society by blatantly taking money away from 1% with even more taxes and distributing them to 99%. One main thing they fight about is forgiving the student loans, basically the government bailing them out. That pretty much means middle class individuals end up paying debts of these idiot students most of whom got useless degrees like sociology, psychology, gender studies instead of science and engineering. The idea of the stupid feeling entitled to hundreds of thousands of dollars for every individual, from the pockets of middle, upper middle and rich classes of US is entitlement at its best and wanting government to do it for them makes them in favor of totalitarianism. I never paid taxes so that idiots with bad decisions get bailed out, be it companies or individuals and I am sure many agree with me on this.

I can't believe Glenn Beck actually sounds sane and rational to me when he talks about this stuff.

All of these points are things that I have argued for so long and I am very happy to find people that holds my views.

I can respect Glenn in this because he's actually making solid arguments, listening and agreeing to different opinions and doing so in a calm and respectful fashion, which he is not know for.

More conversations like this need to happen.

Penn is the type of atheist that all atheists should aspire to be. Tolerant and willing to discuss things, rather than condescending and insulting.

This is the first time I have heard of Glen Beck, and as an atheist I happen to really appreciate the way he presents his ideas.

Beck stole his little chalk board lesson from the book, "None Dare Call It Conspiracy."

Thank you for this Glenn. It was very refreshing to see a Christian who is willing to have an atheist on their show and have an actual conversation (and not just a shouting match).I wish both atheists and Christians would do more interviews like this so we can all realize that the "other side" isn't always as crazy as we think, and we all agree on a lot more than we tend to think.

As an atheist libertarian I hate Beck like aids, but respect for talking someone like Jillette.

Was a pretty intelligent conversation, which I wasn't expecting when I saw Glenn Beck in the title. lol

Jillette hit the nail on the head and answered his own question about why Government should be involved in our Marriage, when he said that no lawyer was able to guarantee him that if a horrible misfortune befalls his wife he would be able to keep custody of his children. The whole idea of custody is based on the government being in the middle of disputes about who gets to care for the children. If you take government out of that dispute you're left with whoever is currently caring for them as their legal guardian (assuming they don't want to give that up). The moment we find a better mechanism for dealing with custody disputes is the moment we should take government out of marriage, but until then I think government should be involved. Please let me know if and why you agree/disagree with this reasoning.

This is a side of Glenn Beck that I have never seen before. He actually seems half sane... I wish both sides could sit down and discuss the real issues like this more often, the world would be a better place.

I despised Beck for the longest time but the fact is, he's a lucid, thoughtful man who has much to say about our political system. I still don't agree with all he has to say but I DO respect him.

What an excellent discussion between two intelligent and reasonable people. It has been a while since I have watched Glenn Beck and I have to say it it good to see him mellow a bit. He presents his point of view so much better now. It is also good to see the principles of Libertarianism starting to regain traction again. Also Penn does an excellent job presenting the position of Atheism and Libertarianism so well and aligned with the majority of those two philosophies. I have to say the issue of tribalism is an excellent point as well.

I've never really watched Glenn Beck before but besides being a religious person and apparently thinking religious people should be allowed to put their religious beliefs on public property, he actually came across as very reasonable and willing to listen.

Actually, in no official document is this nation referred to as a "christian" nation. Specifically, in the Treaty of Tripoli, 1796 - Article 11 it states "The United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion." It was prepared under the direction of George Washington and signed by John Adams.

He's not the nut, big media has made him out to be. Hoping that perhaps there is more collaboration in the future between Jillette and Beck, this is good and healthy conversation that our nation desperately needs.

I used to be a constitution conservative, then American libertarian, then I accepted the zeitgeist/venus projects essential idea (anarcho-technocracy), then I accepted anarcho-capitalism, then I accepted anarcho-communism/socialism. I still accept all of these choices as things to be pursued over our current system. I consider anarcho-technocracy the apex (but also most difficult)

Personally I think many people misunderstand Jefferson when he wrote about our rights in the Deceleration of Independence. Here is what I think, he wrote "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." As Penn mentioned he did use the term, self-evident and as the lady stated, he did use the term Creator. I think if you look at the word he used before Creator, it was "their", I think this was used to in compose everyone, those that believed in a god, and those that didn't, as Beck stated he did use the word "nature" a lot to explain our rights as well. Jefferson understood that even during that time there were those that did not believe in a god, and there were also many different religions that existed throughout the word. His major point was that our rights did not come from man or any thing that man created (such as Governments) but something greater.

I agree with Penn "the minimum amount of government we can have that insures individual liberties" so no government. I'm liking Penn's view assuming he thinks there's no need for any form of government.

This was such a respectful conversation. I have a new respect for Beck and as always have the utmost faith (there's that word again) in Penn and Teller (although I've only heard Teller speak a few times).

I have been a fan of Glenn Beck for a long time, even when he was at CNN swimming upstream in that "conservative haven" (sarcasm) of their one sided journalism. I have also listened to Penn Jillette for a long time. I have enjoyed him as a Magician and as a common sense Libertarian, and although I am a Christian I respect the way he shares his views. Penn is not afraid to tell a believer that he is wrong, but he does it in a respectful way, unlike those who are in the ilk of Bill Maher. I would have never pictured these two men as good friends, however if "WE THE PEOPLE," believed in two things there is more that unites us than divides us. 1) The freedom found in that incredible document called "The Constitution." Which allows for "all people" to be on an equal footing. Yes, I know, there are flaws that sometimes have to be dealt with by the people. But because of that Constitution, common people have an advantage that is difficult to find anywhere else in the world. My ancestors were Polish and Lithuanian, both under the dominion of the Soviet Union, both having little or no rights to address their government and both could only hope and pray for a government like that found in the United States to embrace their native land. 2) Whether we agree with someone or not, we MUST treat them with respect. We don't have to embrace their beliefs, but we must learn to be civil. I look at both parties on this Presidential campaign, and both parties are being so intolerant of the other persons opinion they feel that the person on the other side doesn't have a right to their opinion. Some leaders and even media outlets are telling the people to riot or beat up the opposing side, Like the Huntington Post. Frankly I don't like either candidate, but I see the vitriol escalating to the point of "near civil war," temperaments; and those who are intentionally doing this to get what they desire; people like George Soros bear the responsibility of the potential cataclysmic results. We The People must listen, and not be manipulated by the Media who are steering people in the direction they want the people to go. I'm not a fan of Trumps but you can see the media getting apoplectic about the possibility of Trump becoming POTUS while Mrs Clinton is getting a "free pass" on the litany of allegations charged against her. Trump is being blamed when someone at his convention becomes violent, however the media is also saying it is his fault when one of the people at his rally get beat up by a protester. You can't play by two sets of rules and call yourself fair or reasonable. I do not want to vote for Trump but I think I must due to the fact that Hillary is very anti-Second amendment and believes in gun confiscation. I have worked in Law enforcement for more than 27 years and I see the writing on the wall, that if Hillary is elected President the great American Experiment is OVER and my children will never live in the type of free society I grew up in.
