They also used a lot of CGI. The technology used in Tarzan that showed him swinging down the trees was used throughout the whole movie, and one of the characters had to be animated twice because his arm was CG while the rest was hand drawn. I loved how they were able to mix the two together.

@@diadokhoi5722 for sure, people don't realize that CGI is in no way easy, and while there's nothing wrong with appreciating the aesthetic of hand drawn animation but it's undeniable that thanks to today's technology CGI just looks so much more lifelike and detailed, it's really incredible. There's no need to put down one to bring up the other yet people love to hate animation just because hey blame it for the death of 2d animation when in reality 2d animation only went out of date because viewers preferred 3d, and for good reason.

That's if you draw one image for every frame. Each second of film has 24 frames. But a lot of the time, the animation is shot on two's (or two frames per second) meaning that there are actually 12 images per second, not 24. It's ultimately in the timing. Some images are shot on two's, while some on three's and others on one's.

Too often, its fading to 3D. Generations change. Now they're starting to make live action movies with real people mimicking what was once 2D. All the major classic fairytales of old have been fulfilled. There's no where else to go unless people just make it up. Usually when people make stuff up these days it is either limited and good, or not good at all. The best ones at it seem to be game companies and Marvel comics.

A clean up artist traces over Glen's drawings on new sheets of paper (to get more definitive lines), then (back then) they would put a transparent cel over the cleaned up drawings to trace them on, then use acrylic based paint to color it. Then, the cels are placed over a painted background and shot frame by frame with a camera.

Yeah,...anime don't have fluid motion like Disney movies. Only some do, but they cheat by having their closing up on the eyes or have their mouths opening just a little. Standing still and talking saves on the frames of animation but people can tell that dead space of non-fluid life. (For those who pay attention.) Its a lot of work to get a result for a "feel of atmosphere". Its worth it if you do an animation everyone appreciates because then it flips. Then, all the work and time you spent on it, can be viewed over and over again by MANY viewers for years and years to come. Which means that one moment in time that took you forever to create it is worth more than the amount of times viewed; because the amount of times viewed will be eventually equal more than the time spent if the work is on or beyond par.

@TroelsBrusen not sure what this is in response to, but to clarify: what glen is doing on the screen here is called flipping. rolling is what animators do with their non-drawing hand when they are actually animating. They put their fingers between the drawings and move them them forward and back to test the movement of the animation as they draw. They are then free to draw in more details instantaneously--and then check the movement again by rolling. you flip the scene when it is done.

But for classic, hand-drawn animation, yeah this is how it's done. Although, it doesn't have to start on paper anymore now that we have tablets; particularly video tablets like the Cintiq.

@jamalanimation Pixar is actually open to do traditional animation, it's just that Disney thinks that by having movies in 3D, it would somehow automatically make it a good movie, get more audiences and make more money. They won't provide the money to produce traditional animation unless it's a fairytale genre or has elements of a fairytale, which is absolutely ridiculous. It's kind of ironic now, because before they hated 3D, now they're constantly using it to make money...

@Dalen77 - People rarely, if ever use 3's or 4's, the motion would be far to jagged. Most animations uses a combination of 1's and 2's because it gives it the slick, fluid motion that you always see in films. Seeing as Glen Keane said that they used 24 frames a second, they must primarily be on 1's. Animation legend Richard Williams thinks for the most part that even 2's doesn't give a smooth enough motion.

It's too bad that we don't get quality animation like this anymore, now it's all freaky looking 3D graphics. You know, there's a beauty to 2D that 3D doesn't have and combined with computers, it's like watching pictures come to life. Now anime is as close to 2D as I can get...but that's no enough to fill the void that the legacy has left behind.

@RatherGrim Also 3s are used the most in the Disney films in again the slow scenes coming out of holds where there is little movement, but some times there just mixed in in a lot scenes, 4s are more in Japanese animation, but you might get a few 4s in slow holds where your trying to keep the drawing alive, Bluth did this so well in the Land Before Time holds, great holds coming in and out, some of the best Ives seen. They didn't perfect this back in Bambi yet.

That's a definitive yes-all-the-way! (I also have to correct myself, I forgot he animated Bernard from the Rescuers so he actually has been with Disney since the 1970s!) Also I'm re-reading my comment, and I hope I didn't sound too aloof. :(

You know, I've only really heard of guys becoming animators. I'm a girl, and art is my passion, and I think that animation is what I really want to do. Would that be kinda weird since I'm a girl? Haha.. an answer would be appreciated
