Glazing Possibilities- 28 Different Approaches to Glazing Pottery!

This video is preparing my Ceramics students to glaze their pieces at the end of the semester.
In this video, I glaze 28 wheel thrown bowls. We use stoneware glazes (cone 5 and 6 midfire) on our Standard 153 stoneware, a nice midrange firing stoneware. I used Coyote brand cone 6 glazes and underglazes in the carved design grooves on a few bowls to keep the stoneware glazes separate when they fire. I now use Standard 125 which is a lovely cone 6 stoneware that looks the same as the 153~
Here is a link to the follow up video showing the final glaze results!! Here is a link to a Googleslide presentation (in pdf form) which shows the results- also viewable in the next video! drive.google.com/file/d/1MXUl...
If you would like to go directly to a technique, here is a list with timestamps of when those techniques appear in the video. Also, check the PART 2 video for the final results too: • Part 2 Final Glaze Re...

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZread channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

This is such a great video! Thanks so much for posting it. There are so many ceramics videos and it can be so hard to find a really straightforward video where an intelligent person is explaining all the ways to glaze without loads of talking crap, making the video 10 times longer than it needs to be. You have answered so many questions i had about glazing. I am doing my first day ever using a potters wheel and I am so jealous there are schools out there where you can do this as a normal part of the school day. My school definitely didn't offer anything like this back in my day!

This video is very inspiring and practical, Your's students are really lucky to have such a great teacher. I loved the idea of kiln ticket too :). If You will do some more videos in the future about glazing, perhaps You could include how to glaze coil pots or pots with crayons decoration. thank You for sharing with us.

Great teaching, nice and clear descriptions! Kids must be pressuring their families to enroll them! Lots to learn from you as a ceramics teacher! I hope the faculty and students recognize even a fraction of what a living library and exemplary educator you are. Come to Canada, great benefits, free medical, and you would make about 96,000$ CDN per year for all you offer.

This is far more than at the local community college! Great tip with a pencil for the wax resist.

You are a rock star! My community College in California didn't have that many glaze options! We had about 40, but we mixed them all ourselves. Your students are so incredibly lucky to have you. The video had to take a fair amount of time to record and prep for for a half hour video.

Thank you!!! It really did take quite a while- but I’m so glad I did it! The throwing, trimming, set up, filming and glazing all told took about 20 hours! I had three hours of footage that I “boiled down” to 25 minutes! But, now my kids have a reference for many years to come!!

Impressive school setup. I did pottery in college and they didn't have anywhere near the amount of glazes and tools. Very lucky students and teacher. Thanks for the video. It was fun to watch.
