Hello Fellow Potters!
In this video I am sharing a recent glaze kiln unloading with you. Whenever I run my kiln I'm always excited in the morning to see what magic happened, and I can get a little impatient waiting for my kiln to cool enough to open it up! Today, you get to see my actual reaction to the pots as I see them for the first time! I also share what glazes I used so get your pens and paper ready!
I hope you enjoy!

    Hi Sally thank you for watching and subscribing to my channel! The Laguna 391 clay is a little rough on the hands when throwing due to the grog but in my opinion worth it because it’s just so gorgeous! I just love the way glazes play against the dark chocolate colour of the clay! I’ve used it with a few different glazes and have been pleased every time! Good luck with it!!

    Not many people using the darker clays, on KZread. I like them too, I’m happy to see the results! Have you ever used a black clay? What would you recommend for a black clay? I actually liked the glaze that crawled… i suppose it was a little thick… I love the Frosted Lemon glaze!

  • @SarahWaltonPottery

    @SarahWaltonPottery

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Victoria, I agree I think I must have applied the glaze a little too thick resulting in the crawling..:( the closest to a black clay I’ve used is the Laguna 391 which fires really really dark. And I’ve used the Pottery Supply House ‘black’ clay which is really a very dark brown . Both look stunning at cone 6 but I prefer the PSH clay as it doesn’t have grog so it kinder on the hands for throwing. Thank you for supporting my channel!

    Hi Crypto Mami! The marble clay is a mixture of 3 different clays and when put on the wheel they create a marbled effect...one of my personal faves!! Hi, you can just reapply a bit of glaze where the crawling was (maybe you will have to heat your pot before). Crawling is because the glaze was applied too thickly. Same with where you forgot the second layer: just reapply and fire again. Sometimes the colors get more melted and even more beautiful after a second (of third) firing. About the catchers, how many times can you use them? They don't bloat after several firings?

  • @SarahWaltonPottery

    @SarahWaltonPottery

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ann! Thanks for the suggestion re, refiring, I have done that before and maybe I should try it here. I am worried that the glazes will run roofs the pot but hey it’s worth the shot cuz as it stands they are ruined! as for the drip catchers you can use them many times, I usually end up smashing them due to drips than for any other reason. And for bloating it really doesn’t matter bcuz you aren’t using them form anything other then for firing. You can even put kiln wash on them for even more uses! As a side note, I can’t take credit for them I got the idea from Old Forge Creations. Thanks again for the tips!

    Your cone packs are backward. The lowest cone should be first in the pack (it slumps first, so you don't want it slumping on an unslumped cone in front of it). Also, if you had placed the cone packs behind the peepholes where you could see them, you would know exactly where the kiln is during the firing. Clearly (based on the large cones) your firing was ended too soon and did not reach temperature (although it is firing unevenly - hotter in the bottom). If the cones had been where you could see them, you could have fired spot on temperature, even corrected the uneven temperature. There is not much point using visual cones when you can't see them. Never trust mechanical kiln devices, especially kiln sitters!

  • @SarahWaltonPottery

    @SarahWaltonPottery

    Thank you Will for this info. I appreciate you taking the time to give me these great pointers. I struggle to see the cones in the kiln thru the peep holes even when lined up where I should be able to see. All I see is red hot. I tried using a flashlight as I’ve seen a potter do and that didn’t work so I use the cones to confirm that each shelf makes it to temp. So if you have a suggestion to help me see the cones during firing I’d appreciate it. 😊🙏
