Gladiators: The Arena Warriors - History of Rome
#Rome #Gladiators #SeeUinHistory #History
Wiki: A gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena.

Actually, the Thumbs Up signal was aimed at the throat to show that the gladiator should be finished off, and the Thumbs Down was a dismissal--"Let him go." This may have varied per emporer/organizer, and probably did since at some point the signals got reversed.

@Olias I learned this from an expert in Roman history. At some point along the way the signals got reversed and currently you're right about the interpretations, though originally they were different.

It was thumbs down in a slanted way way which meant death. I could be wrong.

Gladiator classes were foreign and domestic styles, weapons, and Armour. The Armour was more used as a handicap to even gladiator classes out and about each have unique strengths and weaknesses. But yeah the styles came from all over thr known world and represented beaten foreigners and/or glorious Roman victories or legends.

If there is one thing I really like about this channel is all the art and pictures you get
The arenas were indeed dominated by men but women also appeared from time to time, although it was unusual and against all social standards. Some were forced, others made it for money or glory. Women did not fight men, they fought animals or even each other.

What's the name of the video?
Gorgeous artwork.
*gladiators didn’t say “we who are about to die salute you,” that’s a phrase popularized by Hollywood. As is your description of the thumbs up thumbs down, that’s a French misinterpretation popularized by Hollywood (immortalized in the painting that inspired the movie Gladiator), the only surviving records on gladiator fights marked the decision as what translates to “with a turned thumb,” there are no records on which way meant what , but the most generally accepted is down meant sheath the weapon and sideways meant execute, but again there’s no actual definitive answer to what thumb position took or spared a mans life

shame so many things wrong in this video, about the thumb. the saying we who are about to die salute you is also wrong its annoying when people creating videos get facts wrong and the area only held 50,000 people not 65,000 hope you read your comments
How many gladiator movies did you watch to research this video? 🙄
Can you guys do a video on Skoll and Hati?
Actually, Actually, Actually, Actually, Actually, the thumb being up, down, pointing at neck, or whatever else you've heard, is wrong. The only reliable written record says "with pressed thumb" the Gladiator's fate it decided. No one knows exactly what the gesture was.
Phenomenal 👍

That's where they got their name, I bet.
You made the same historical mistake as the movie Gladiator made. Thumbs down actually meant life and thumbs up meant death in Coliseum gladiator matches
Now the Gladiator Beasts from the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG makes sense.
They recently found that gladiators ate a lot of meat depending on where they lived.
The name given to a Gladiator trainer ("Doctore") is only from the Spartacus show, and is likely a mistake. A more accurate name would be a "Lorarius" (from 'Lorum' meaning 'whip').
I thought the thumb up was spare his life. And there was another gesture for killing him. Thats wht i rmeber the tour guide saying at the collesium anyway
Can you do the Ark of the Covenant please
Looks like Alex Ross art style in many pics.
Lots of wrong information in this one
The part with the 👍🏻/👎🏻 is not true!! Is it true that not all fights were ended when the adversaries died. And they used a forfeit sign like 🤞🏻

Only once or twice, thats not little, once a month is, modern human eat too much meat, indians not, 1 day eating nothing is good
VERY INFORMATIVE DOCUMENTARY THOUGH THERE'S A LOT OF PESSIMISTIC FOLKS.
Gladiators always hold a certain amount of interest. Very interesting and educational.
Maybe it’s bad to say and think but wouldn’t it be sick if gladiator arenas came back
Actually the thumb up and down is the other way around up for death down for life
at 0:39 in the background the fashis or 'godkiller' is just there, and this is talking about quite long ago time wise wow!
Like football in the USA. Awesome art work.

Haha . So Gladiators also had a WWE script back then. Make sens as it is expensive to train and retain one.
in the future humans will be relegated to eating each other and these "tough guy" gladiators (as well as every 'modern' tough guy) would be nothing more than food.
